Starbucks grinds their own I think!

marcos, Friday, 19 February 2016 02:59 (eight years ago) link

btw americanos w/ an extra shot are good but red-eyes are a little better

marcos, Friday, 19 February 2016 03:01 (eight years ago) link

I should start ordering more of those

marcos, Friday, 19 February 2016 03:01 (eight years ago) link

I would bet both Au Bon Pain and Le Pain grind their beans.

the starbucks espresso machine grinds the beans inside the machine

I think it's basically a custom order version of this sucker: http://www.pauligprofessional.com/en/thermoplan-black-white-3-cbt2-automatic-coffee-machine-4700221

Starbucks's flat white is not bad btw, although every time they try to insinuate themselves into third wave coffee culture they sound a little like Hillary Clinton.

you ponder the proposition with a deep sigh but will probably buy it at some point anyway

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 19 February 2016 03:55 (eight years ago) link

I've been told that Starbucks doesn't grind their own anymore

i think the trick might be ordering americanos everywhere instead of asking for drip coffee

I did that for a few years

same --- i think the first time i had a cup of coffee where i actually noticed the quality was when i got an americano at this place (http://www.camp4coffee.com/) where, iirc, they did not serve drip, just espresso drinks. that was p much my MO until just a few years ago, when i started making coffee at home

jason waterfalls (gbx), Friday, 19 February 2016 12:45 (eight years ago) link

xps to marcos I've done the red eye thing before, it can be good times--especially at places where the drip is in front of the counter, so I can stare into the beautiful color spectra formed by the tiny volume of espresso+crema dispersing in the flow of coffee (don't fill it all the way obv unless you are a clown w/ no taste)

these days I mostly have coffee at places with free refills, or tea at home; but then sometimes I'll order a shot of espresso and down it in a hurry, just to feel more important idk

Although sometimes if I'm really really tired and I really really need to get something done, I'll do 1/2 and 1/2 decaf and regular. Anything more than that and I'm flirting with a full blown anxiety attach.

I have switched down to half-decaf in the past few weeks. I've become more caffeine-sensitive. I used to be able to drink coffee any time of day and sleep fine at night. Then a year or two ago I started to realize that having anything past noon would jack me up at night. And now here I am with just the half-caff thing in the morning. And on days when I don't get coffee at all, I haven't been getting withdrawal symptoms.

i got spontaneous and sassy and decided to work from home today, enjoyed that good cof i made myself

luckily i buy cof infrequently enough out and abt that buying americanos every time won't really add up all that much

drinking that sweet aeropress cof

μpright mammal (mh), Friday, 19 February 2016 15:15 (eight years ago) link

did u use a #gooseneck to fill the aeropress tho?

hooked on cof medicine

A coworker was intrigued by the French press I use in the office (I’m not remotely a coffee snob but our office coffee is really bad) so he picked one up when he was at Ikea last weekend. He wasn’t completely satisfied with the results from it so we were talking technique but it was a very confusing conversation; it was like we were talking about two completely different methods of brewing coffee. Finally he was like ok show me step by step how you make a cup of coffee. I pull out the French press, pull out the plunger, and as I’m demonstrating I can see I’m blowing his mind.

It turns out he was pouring hot water into an empty pot, putting the plunger in a couple of inches, piling coffee grounds on top of the plunger, and lowering it into the water, removing it when he was ready to pour.

“Didn’t the coffee grounds make a big mess when you took the plunger out?” I asked? “A little bit,” he said. “It’s not too bad if you’re careful.”

tbf probably some coffee shop is going to be using a french press that way and claiming they invented it sometime by 2020

lol @ reverse French Press method. Is this guy one of those millennials I've been reading with who can't even deal with cereal because there's too much cleanup or whatever?

Tim Horton's coffee is the worst. Emergency-only nighttime-driving coffee.
I don't understand how people purposely make it a part of their morning routine. my bf worked at one on the east coast when he was a teen and the drive thru was lined up to the street every morning.

That French press story on the other hand is excellent.

xp but yes 2 that & also the cruller

I wish the company behind Nespresso wasn't evil, I'd like an espresso pod machine in my office for afternoon caffeine injections.

just get an aeropress

Doesn't give you that lovely kick of evil in every sip

Soon all logins will look like this (darraghmac), Friday, 26 February 2016 19:54 (eight years ago) link

I don't really like Aeropress coffee, it's too much like a regular cup of coffee. I pretty much just drink double espressos or cold brew concentrate without watering it down.

The other problem with Nespresso in the US is that you have to mail order capsules (unless you have a Nespresso shop nearby, the closest to me is ~45 minutes), so if you run out without replenishing you're just SOL.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 26 February 2016 20:01 (eight years ago) link

ya but even when you make it acc to the official directions (like only a few tablespoons of water per scoop of coffee)?

Pretty sure I never tried anything but their basic directions and it was still too 'cup of coffee'-like for me.

At home I have a Crossland CC1 machine that's pretty good but fiddlier than I like and occasionally get wonky with the electronics (forgets settings, etc.), thinking of selling it and getting a lever machine.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 26 February 2016 20:07 (eight years ago) link

ya, timmy's coffee is disgusting

their chili is pretty good, though. and you can't go wrong with timbits
