Though: double-chocolate Tim Hortons doughnut 4ever

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Friday, 26 February 2016 19:22 (eight years ago) link

I would sooner drink a cup of upside down french press coffee than a cup of timmy ho's signature cigarette-butt-kombucha that they call coffee

xp but yes 2 that & also the cruller

I wish the company behind Nespresso wasn't evil, I'd like an espresso pod machine in my office for afternoon caffeine injections.

just get an aeropress

Doesn't give you that lovely kick of evil in every sip

I don't really like Aeropress coffee, it's too much like a regular cup of coffee. I pretty much just drink double espressos or cold brew concentrate without watering it down.

The other problem with Nespresso in the US is that you have to mail order capsules (unless you have a Nespresso shop nearby, the closest to me is ~45 minutes), so if you run out without replenishing you're just SOL.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 26 February 2016 20:01 (eight years ago) link

ya but even when you make it acc to the official directions (like only a few tablespoons of water per scoop of coffee)?

Pretty sure I never tried anything but their basic directions and it was still too 'cup of coffee'-like for me.

At home I have a Crossland CC1 machine that's pretty good but fiddlier than I like and occasionally get wonky with the electronics (forgets settings, etc.), thinking of selling it and getting a lever machine.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 26 February 2016 20:07 (eight years ago) link

ya, timmy's coffee is disgusting

their chili is pretty good, though. and you can't go wrong with timbits

Some people are putting in coffee bars at comic shops, which is interesting but I'm extremely slow at making espresso for myself at home, can't imagine trying to do it for real or training others.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 26 February 2016 20:09 (eight years ago) link

lolol one of those just opened near my coworker and he says it suuuuuucks, like decent comics but the coffee is a total afterthought

like in 2016 why the fing f wd you make ANY sort of cof shop, hybrid or otherwise, and not strive for great cof? There is no room for so so cof anymore.

i wonder by % how many timbits sold are being brought to offices by people trying to bribe and/or apologize

wait the coffee/comics thing is supposed to be new? we had one of those over a decade ago, then they relocated and lost the coffee business, and have already relocated a second time and have both again. and some sort of cronut-like thing.

lag∞n, Friday, 26 February 2016 22:00 (eight years ago) link

they're great for awhile until you realise that all the capsules taste the same, no matter what color they are, and you're stuck with that flavor forever. plus the evilness and waste obv.

My costco stopped carrying my starbucks via and I ran out of them, so I bought some Irving Farm coffee beans AT THE FUCKING AIRPORT on the way home from a work trip which is the lamest thing ever. Anyway it wasn't that good, nothing special.

Mail ordering beans is surprisingly cost effective. Fresh roasted from Intelligentsia or similar costs less per pound than buying from Whole Foods or the local shops/roasters I've found, plus they're almost always fresher. When I get Intelligentsia, the roasted on date is usually the day before I order and they arrive two days after that via Priority Mail.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 27 February 2016 19:39 (eight years ago) link

I was trying to search for this but couldn't find anything - is there any real evidence that beans roasted x days before grinding and brewing are better and that there's a rapid decline at some point?

Like with espresso everyone claims that ~4-10 days is imperative, but having access to beans that freshly roasted is new and I still see a lot of European espresso brands selling bagged beans roasted months ago or even ground espresso.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 27 February 2016 19:41 (eight years ago) link

enjoying some of this. your basic dark roast, nothing exciting, but it was free.

Here's where I buy my beans:

They are quite good, fairly inexpensive, and also do mail order.

guy at a local coffee shop told me espresso beans aren't good for aeropress, that i want, what, a non-espresso roast i guess? it was busy and loud and i didn't get all the info. dammit!

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 27 February 2016 23:24 (eight years ago) link

Espresso beans are generally just a kind of blend (rather than single source or whatever) from what I understand, most shops I've looked at list multiple forms of brewing instruction for 'espresso beans' - pourover, Aeropress, etc.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 27 February 2016 23:33 (eight years ago) link

"Espresso beans" doesn't even really mean anything. There's "espresso roast" which is basically just a dark roast. Espresso can be a blend or single origin though and pretty much anywhere from medium to dark roast.
