you know, that actually does make me feel better. i totally wanna hear that buckingham/nicks btw. in return i will play you lulu's "i'll come running," which has been ruling my world for the last two weeks - it's even better than the eno song of the same name!

ZR (teenagequiet), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:26 (eighteen years ago) link

zack - do you remember that band whose cd we got in at MUC a few years ago who had one song that sounded exactly like motorik neu!? it was a double name, like the gris gris (but not them), if i remember correctly...

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:29 (eighteen years ago) link

lulu of to sir, with love fame? couldn't have gotten through high school without hearing it on 100.3. remember when 100.3 was something other than commercials? july 4th weekends (top 500 countdown) have never been so awesome.

carly (carly), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:32 (eighteen years ago) link

NEVERMIND! THANKS!

that rhino box is ridiculous, from what i heard from ZR. you will love it, carly.

petesmith (plsmith), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:34 (eighteen years ago) link

oh man, now i have to go to ilm and find out that band name. thanks a lot, pete.

xpost, the one shaped like a hat box? awesome.

carly (carly), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:35 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah same lulu, except growling her fucking guts out over a jimmy page gtr hook that's punchy enough to give black eyes to unsuspecting listeners. your heart will fill with amore upon hearing it.

my hand smells like coffee. gross.

ZR (teenagequiet), Thursday, 10 November 2005 21:42 (eighteen years ago) link

i can't really drink coffee, which is a shame because i have SO much school work to do right now. (the whole caffine thing just makes my heart race and remind me of days when i used to ADD-ER-ALL up.)

Zack, remind me to tell you the Sam Sessa dropping drinks story sometime. Very Funny.

Seconded.

Mr. Quincie's employer, in an attempt to make everyone feel better about having to work on a federal holdiay, somehow made everyone feel worse by announcing that employees could wear jeans today.

YIPPEE jeans so much better than a holiday baaaaaaah!!!!!!!!!!

The Sunday front page article (1st part of the series) was pretty good too..

I lived right off 13th and U briefly for the summer of 2000 (my friends stayed a couple years after that). I thought it was getting awfully gentrified then! It's insane what has happened to the neighborhood since.. There used to be a cool flea market in a vacant lot where that whole Ellington condo building complex is now. I don't know what the Saint-Ex guy is griping about though. He sets up a fancy faux Parisian bistro.. no wonder rich people are gonna hang out there! duh!

awesome stuff seen on my commute this week:
1. Giant SUV pulled over by the Whole Foods on Wisconsin Ave.. by the police breathalyzer van. PWND
2. Garbage truck on U St this morning with hand painted trash can & lettering on the back saying "Gimme You's Goodies"

"condo units starting in the 800's"

I know the developer for this building - it's a truly odd site and price range, but he says they're selling. I can't imagine their marketing - "Offering neither the quiet of the Pallisades nor the urban setting of Georgetown! Inaccessible to the Metro but with the traffic of Wisconsin Avenue!"

Brian Miller (Brian Miller), Thursday, 17 November 2005 16:31 (eighteen years ago) link

Marketing: "ALL the young professionals in DC are going running shopping at Ann Taylor going to law school buying a condo! Your friends will shun you for FAILURE TO CONFORM! ONLY 800K GREAT DEAL BUY NOW ALL THE REAL CAREER ORIENTED PEOPLE ARE DOING IT"

I agree. He was whining that previously the neighborhood only had cheap Salvadorean food. The shame, the shame. The follow-up stuff on him in the 2nd article on Monday was equally annoying. Now he's buying a place on North Capitol close to where he had his Vespa stolen. In 5 or so years he'll be grumbling again.

curmudgeon, Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:08 (eighteen years ago) link

TOMBOT is a yuppie a-hole, and dont let him make you think otherwise. This is all a clever marketing ruse. Its covert demographic research for a chain of indie "on the fringes of society" 24-hour restaurant specializing in exotic crepes.

Spink, Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:12 (eighteen years ago) link

The yuppification of Tombot has definitely limited our apartment search.

xpost to Brian--thank you! Last night mr. q asked where I ate dinner and I was forced to respond, "uh, some place on 14th and G. Started with a 'C'."

I once made the mistake of talking about "getting into a big row with someone" and pronouncing it ROE. Oh, the shame. I now hesitate to pronounce words I'm not sure about.

I am now quite hungry for cheap Salvadorean food WHY NONE OF THIS IN CLEVELAND PARK?

it does seem wrong! But my holier-pronunciation-than-thou Scrabble- geek liberal artsy friends who witnessed this all laughed and laughed like I was some kind of idiot. Fuckers AT LEAST I HAVE A JOB.

Speaking of geeks, how is the Neuro conference going? Or is it over?

quincie, Thursday, 17 November 2005 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Gah. It's over. I was horribly bored during the day. The only good parts were when extremely attractive German men kept approaching me to ask me if I knew US immigration law (??). I was hanging out in our booth next to a dude with a company that sells lab animals, he was pretty cool. He bagged on the Chinese and the Indians and George Bush all in like one sentence and had pictures of guinea pigs and rats. Fuckers kept swiping my pens. Ended yesterday though.

Casa Fiesta (owned by relatives of the people who own El Tamarindo), up Wisconsin Avenue toward Friendship Heights, is still cheap. Although its immediate neighborhood is the next candidate for 800K+ condos.

Saint-Ex guy riding around North Capitol St on his Vespa, why? You live in DC dude! GET ONE HOOPTY

I was house sitting for a World Bank staffer & just ran into old acquaintance last week whose wife is also World Bank staffer/lawyer. He is in LAW SCHOOL and I know him through a college friend who is also in the process of applying to LAW SCHOOL.

Someone I've been working on a website for has the following email address (due to his initials): wtf@FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL.edu

Quincie, try Cafe Paraiso! It's cheap, edible, and bustly, and it's just down from the dread corner of 14th & T NW, though it somehow escaped the attention of the Post reporter. Last time I ate there, the other tables in my dining room were:

1) a hard-ass bunch of young Salvadoran guys with spiky sideburns and neck tattoos,
2) three cops boozing it up with their mistresses (it was a Friday),
3) four bears in sleeveless flannel shirts, just up from Logan Circle, and
4) one gorgeous drag queen with a pencil mustache.

DC is a small town, isn't it. I probably shouldn't post about teh job on teh Internets. (No actual complaints about the job, though.)

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 01:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Eh, but you're pretty much OTM about every other person here being in law school. The FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL that you spoke of is at least 5x the size of the nearest Top 10 competitor, so that may have something to do with it. You can't fart without a law student sniffing it.

By the way, I searched the account database for an otm@FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL.EDU or lol@FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL.EDU or pwn@FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL.EDU, but those aren't in there. Said institution started doing alpha-numeric combos for addresses a few years back.

Re: DC being a small town...ok it was weird enough when it turned out a girl I work with who handles the HR stuff for my group is good friends with someone that Tom works with and is friends with. But yesterday, sitting in my office, a girl comes in with a pile of paperwork to give me and a coworker and we kind of stare at each other and realize...WE WERE BOTH BUYING WEDDING DRESSES IN THE SAME SHOP AT THE SAME TIME 2 WEEKS EARLIER. She works on the same floor as me! WTF???
