This is so infuriiating: http://www.buzzfeed.com/amandachicagolewis/americas-white-only-weed-boom#.pjEvR44WO

"David Bruno, an architect of the failed 2015 legalization initiative in Ohio, told BuzzFeed News last fall that he had recently hired, for a cannabis-related company, someone who has a clean record but 20 years of experience growing weed illegally. Both Bruno and the man he hired are white. As for the many black marijuana growers who — in part because of discriminatory policing — did not escape that era with a clean record, Bruno has little sympathy.

“There’s not going to be a clean bill of health for anyone that was active and got caught,” Bruno said. “Those things are not going to happen. There’s a cost of reform and revolution. We’re not a nice society, and there’s not going to be reparations.”"

dylannn, Friday, 18 March 2016 11:37 (eight years ago) link

how's the weed in denmark?

dylannn, Friday, 18 March 2016 11:38 (eight years ago) link

Much better than in the US. But they closed the free hash market down, and a couple of years later the city had it's first gang war in a decade. So that was stupid.

Frederik B, Friday, 18 March 2016 11:43 (eight years ago) link

i don't know, buddy, got some amazing weed in the u.s.a. bet you've got them beat on exotic imported hash. but shit, what gangs were involved in that?

dylannn, Friday, 18 March 2016 11:46 (eight years ago) link

Rockers and immigrants, basically. It wasn't that bad, a gang war in Copenhagen is a very small kind of gang war, and nobody has any experience shooting people, so very few people got hit. It was still stupid.

And I didn't really do weed so much in the us, but it wasn't that good.

Frederik B, Friday, 18 March 2016 11:51 (eight years ago) link

just judging by what euros tell me, west coast boutique weed down to delivery service regs blow them away, but they were mostly from the uk so maybe that doesn't really count. what else are you guys doing over there? what's a gram of blow go for? lotta pills?
i'm going to watch this al jazeera report on denmark's gang war.

"I don't think that the Danes as such are racists. But I think that they are afraid of what is going to happen with our society. It is about you are either with us or against us. I think that Bush rhetoric has been very sort of contagious also into Danish politics," Magrethe Vestager, the leader of Denmark's Social Liberal Party, says.
took me three reads to realize she meant george w. bush has infected danish politics! unless i'm reading it wrong. fuckin guy gets the blame for everything.

did you spend a while in the u.s.? what were you up to?

dylannn, Friday, 18 March 2016 11:59 (eight years ago) link

If being a bit judgmental I would guess that the US probably has more weed diversity, a higher ceiling for boutique weed, but lower standard of bong culture weed. Copenhagen had the free market i Pusher Street. Which was free of hard drugs. I would guess that uk weed culture is rubbish, but that is solely based on their food culture and extrapolating that they have no taste at all. Sorry, uk ilxors.

I have no idea about drug culture. I did a bit of weed when I was younger, but never anything else but that.

I studied at UCSD for a year. So I was living in San Diego. And perhaps it's college bong culture, not really representational for weed culture at large.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 18 March 2016 13:56 (eight years ago) link

Well, not really, but they're doing their best. It definitely hurt it, and made a lot of the trade go underground. But I'm talking about something that began way back.

Frederik B, Friday, 18 March 2016 14:05 (eight years ago) link

frederik when did you last smoke weed in the US?

marcos, Friday, 18 March 2016 14:10 (eight years ago) link

ime the weed scene has changed dramatically in the US, the proliferation of high potency strains enabled by more relaxed medical & recreational cannabis laws has made it far far easier to find good weed. i haven't smoked that much weed in europe beyond amsterdam but even there i thought high potency US weed was much better

marcos, Friday, 18 March 2016 14:12 (eight years ago) link

15-20 years ago unless you lived out west or had a good connect i do think it was harder to find good weed, "kind buds" only rarely came around when i was in high school in the midwest but now i honestly feel like it is harder to find cheap brick mexican schwag (not that you would want to)

even "college bong culture" now utilizes boutique weed ime

marcos, Friday, 18 March 2016 14:15 (eight years ago) link

both have good weed but my perception is that the u.s. has MORE good weed, more r&d more people growing more people smoking more discerning consumers more retail operations. but i haven't smoked weed in europe in a long, long time.

also, freddie if you have any other stories about ucsd dorm room hijinks or trips down to tj whatever....

dylannn, Friday, 18 March 2016 14:16 (eight years ago) link

a lot of the weed coming out of mexico is fire now, too, mildly compressed crystally popcorn.

dylannn, Friday, 18 March 2016 14:17 (eight years ago) link

California > Christiania > UK ime. There's not that much in it tbh, it's just harder to get good stuff in the UK than the others.

What this has to with food culture is beyond me, but then "I have no idea about drug culture. I did a bit of weed when I was younger" might explain that.

four months pass...

sigh.

The Obama administration has denied a bid by two Democratic governors to reconsider how it treats marijuana under federal drug control laws, keeping the drug for now, at least, in the most restrictive category for U.S. law enforcement purposes.

Drug Enforcement Administration chief Chuck Rosenberg says the decision is rooted in science. Rosenberg gave "enormous weight" to conclusions by the Food and Drug Administration that marijuana has "no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States," and by some measures, it remains highly vulnerable to abuse as the most commonly used illicit drug across the nation.

"This decision isn't based on danger. This decision is based on whether marijuana, as determined by the FDA, is a safe and effective medicine," he said, "and it's not."

Man, that's goofy to me. You know what else isn't safe and effective medicine? Nearly all of the delicious Hostess and Little Debbie brand treats I can buy down at the corner for under a dollar. I get the tactical logic behind trying to use medical applications as a way of breaking the drug-war logic, but I wish it weren't necessary to go that route.

Silence, followed by unintelligible stammering. (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 13 August 2016 02:40 (seven years ago) link

yep, it's ridiculous even if you believe that marijuana isn't an effective medicine, which many people would dispute.

also, you know what IS dangerous and is definitely NOT a safe and effective medicine? alcohol. but for some crazy reason it's not on schedule 1 with heroin.

I look forward to hearing from you shortly, (Karl Malone), Saturday, 13 August 2016 02:44 (seven years ago) link

I heard an interview with someone about this this morning, and the way it's been reported - or reacted to - has not really been accurate. According to the reasonable dude on NPR, there are something like only two obscure plants in the entire world that have ever been classified a medication by the FDA, primarily because there are too many chemicals at work in plants and no way to guarantee a consistent dose with consistent results. But that is not to say effective elements of marijuana could not be studied and used in others medicines, just that the plant itself is unlikely to ever be deemed medical, and I think they said they have expanded study.

The guy also explained the differences between all the scheduled drugs, clearing up a common misconception (at least to me) that they are ordered by danger, which they are not. Anyway, I'll try to find the piece.

I think this was it: https://www.wbez.org/shows/morning-shift/big-week-for-the-future-of-marijuana-in-america/6df7895f-18e9-4a19-8f95-3d4c0853b84e

Very level-headed and informative.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 August 2016 03:50 (seven years ago) link

I guess i don't get why the DEA, as opposed to the FDA, needs to concern itself with whether it's classified as a medicine of any kind. There are tons of things we ingest besides medicines that are not in their purview. I guess both the DEA and FDA are involved in the schedule classification, and since it's deemed a drug it has to be placed somewhere in their lineup? I'll listen to the interview later on though.

Silence, followed by unintelligible stammering. (Doctor Casino), Saturday, 13 August 2016 04:02 (seven years ago) link

The guys says it's actually the HHS that determines schedules, not the DEA. Stuff on schedules around the 4-minute mark in the interview. Catch-22 stuff is that the reason it is considered schedule 1 is because it falls under the category of "the drug or other substance has no currently accepted medical treatment use in the U.S.," which is complicated because even though marijuana *is* being offered medically in several states it's really still doing it extra legally.

The takeaway is basically that it is very unlikely that marijuana will ever be classified a medicine in the US, but that after it is (eventually) legalized on a federal level here it should get tacit FDA approval (as such) on the same tier as stuff like vitamins and other supplements. That is, the FDA will not give its imprimatur and vouch for its not scientifically consistent claims as a medicine but will allow it to be sold with the usual printed caveats. It all sounds sort of roundabout and catch-22-y, but the biggest hold up in FDA approval seems to be its illegality on a Federal level, yet once it is made legal then the FDA approval will be made moot.

Sounds to me like Obama admin has its finger to the wind and is just waiting out the clock, a la marriage equality.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 13 August 2016 04:12 (seven years ago) link

Part of my takeaway is about the specific comments on it being a potential drug of abuse (ie getting high) - other than alcohol (though everything there revolves around 'responsible use' despite making things like Fireball that exist only to get 19-year olds fuckin' hammered), we're still hamstrung culturally by this idea that it's wrong to get high.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Saturday, 13 August 2016 06:00 (seven years ago) link

But no one is trying to classify alcohol as an FDA approved medicine, dangerous as it can be.

Ordered an oral tincture of 'legal' CBD oil (which is apparently still a gray area) with negligible THC content from 4 Corners Cannabis in Colorado just to see if it has any effect on low-level anxiety that's been bothering me lately.

my wife put cbd oil in her tea for a couple weeks and said it helped but I'm not sure if a placebo would help just as much or not..

carthago delenda est (mayor jingleberries), Wednesday, 17 August 2016 23:50 (seven years ago) link

two weeks pass...

the pure CBD oil does seem a little relaxing but nothing mindblowing - taking some did calm

Tried a hash oil that's 78% CBD/8% THC through a vaporizer - very strange, definitely some body relaxation (like a mild muscle relaxer) and a mental calm without feeling 'high.' If weed ever becomes legal, this kind of combo will become incredibly popular.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 2 September 2016 05:31 (seven years ago) link

where do you hail from milo? so weird that weed is just straight up illegal almost everywhere. i'm in WA state, and I'm right on the border of OR too, so there are just...stores. weed stores everywhere. they sell all manner of everything and I haven't even been in one yet because you need a photo ID to get inside, I just send the missus in like she's stopping by the grocery for milk. so !

of course we aren't living in any kind of mad max scenario everything is fine.

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Friday, 2 September 2016 08:44 (seven years ago) link

speaking of the missus she quite likes the "CBD"s because they help with her migraines, may have to look into this pure CBD oil business

I guess we've come a long way from "here's a baggie of whatever is is, good luck"

erudite beach boys fan (sheesh), Friday, 2 September 2016 08:48 (seven years ago) link

From what I've read, that kind of a percentage of CBD seems really high...I thought about 5% was about where that tops out in traditional strains.

calstars, Friday, 2 September 2016 11:54 (seven years ago) link

It's very high, but once the stories came out about CBD and epilepsy/etc. it seems like breeders managed to encourage high CBD quite quickly. There are other strains that are more like 1:1 by bringing down THC levels to 9-10% and bringing up CBD to that level.

i live in a shitty state (OH) so this is still what we've got, though the quality of whatever is in the baggie has increased considerably since i first started buying weed in high school

OH almost legalized rec last year but it was a weird monopoly w/ a restricted # of growers (though still allowed home growing iirc) and was voted down, we also just passed a shitty medical bill

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:31 (seven years ago) link

i'd love to try various strains and oils to see what works best though, just hope it's sooner rather than later that i get to do that in my home state

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:31 (seven years ago) link

Reading about all the things that exist in OR/CO/WA is crazy. Here's an e-cig juice that will get you high if you want the easiest route, or here's some pot with the actual THC/CBD/etc. characteristics tested or here's edibles/wax/etc..

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:45 (seven years ago) link

yea it is truly wild, i do wonder whether more widespread legalization will eventually come with some heavier restrictions on what can be sold

marcos, Friday, 2 September 2016 16:46 (seven years ago) link

Edibles probably need to be regulated more than anything else - Maureen Dowd had a column about eating an entire chocolate bar and getting way too high, it's not uncommon in the legal states apparently. The guide Dowd used says he told her that the bar was meant to be split among multiple people but the package didn't say that.

Kiarostami bag (milo z), Friday, 2 September 2016 16:48 (seven years ago) link

Reading about all the things that exist in OR/CO/WA is crazy

it's p much like this in CA now too, the range of shit at dispensaries is bewildering. I expect full legalization is gonna happen in November.

I won't even sell old housewares on Craigslist because I don't want to deal with the people involved, fuck buying illicit substances.

Not many other great options for a middle aged person if you're not in a legal state. But if youre in a decent size city Craigslist is your best bet without knowing someone already.
