Cesare Maldini. I saw him in 1997 in Bergamo, near the Atalanta stadium, where we were both headed. Always presumed he was there to check out Inzaghi, who got his first cap shortly after.

Jim Ridley, editor and longtime film critic for the Nashville Scene, dies at 50:

http://www.nashvillescene.com/pitw/archives/2016/04/08/scene-editor-jim-ridley-dies-at-50#more

I think he hadn't been writing as much about film since he became editor in chief, but he was a good critic. He got national distribution for a while, while the Scene was part of the Voice/New Times empire.

RIP, 50 is way too soon! i grew up reading ridley, he was one of the few consistently good writers in local nashville media in the 90's.

David, who appeared on the most recent series of Celebrity Big Brother, was set to begin a UK tour 'David Gest Is Not Dead, But Alive With Soul' in July.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 15:12 (eight years ago) link

The show must go on!

Alba, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 15:17 (eight years ago) link

It probably seems kind of ghoulish - in fact (I'm assuming) it's incredibly ghoulish since it refers to the scene where he was asleep in the Celebrity Big Brother house when Angie Bowie heard that her ex-husband was dead. She told a US reality TV show star "David's dead", and before she could clarify, the younger lady ran off to tell everyone else that Gest was dead.

Andrew Farrell, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 15:21 (eight years ago) link

Reminds me of Joan Rivers' sadly unfulfilled 'Before They Close The Lid' tour

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 19:54 (eight years ago) link

^ xp this is an immensely shitty profile btw

ulysses, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 19:55 (eight years ago) link

Sorry - false alarm

... (Eazy), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 19:56 (eight years ago) link

also yeah wtf at that piece totally terrible, near incoherent

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 19:59 (eight years ago) link

Jesus Christ that profile!

He spends his days looking at his old comix and fucking that disgusting wife of his which might very well explain why every man over 70 is looking for his Tadzio.

His wife, Aline the star fucker, is vile. She is what you would imagine the screaming brunette standing at the stage door on 53rd of the Ed Sullivan theater on that chilly 9th of February 1964 who left with one of them would look like today. She hated me on the spot. Vermin have a chemical way to sense their own kind.

Maybe Crumb is indeed a nasty antisemite, but what has Aline Crumb done to deserve this?!

Tuomas, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:03 (eight years ago) link

ffs, that piece is beyond horrendous.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:05 (eight years ago) link

Vermin have a chemical way to sense their own kind.

he accuses Crumb of anti-semitism and then literally drops an anti-semitic insult on his wife a few sentences later!

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:09 (eight years ago) link

Aline's Jewish btw (not sure Tuomas was aware of that)

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:09 (eight years ago) link

I wasn't, but apparently the writer is too. So he thinks Aline and himself are both "vermin"? I thought the Observer was some kind of a quality paper, why would they publish self-centred, misogynist "gonzo" shit like that?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:12 (eight years ago) link

the line about Howard Stern being the embodiment of the jock ethos in a reject's carcass is otm, though.

we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:12 (eight years ago) link

he's an ex-hebdo guy doing the "gonzo" thing by way of being a generally embarrassing writer
recently kicked up a lot of dirt and created an internet kerfuffle over a spiked piece for Elle

I thought the Observer was some kind of a quality paper, why would they publish self-centred, misogynist "gonzo" shit like that?

this is a different Observer from the UK newspaper the Observer, I don't know if that is the one you were thinking of?

soref, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:57 (eight years ago) link

Ah, okay,

Tuomas, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:58 (eight years ago) link

that's the one I thought it was.

ohhhhhhhhh THAT GUY

i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 20:59 (eight years ago) link

the most obnoxious element of that piece is the obviously misleading clickbait URL which I presume led to this conversation in the first place!

ulysses, Tuesday, 12 April 2016 21:22 (eight years ago) link

Observer US is owned by Trump's son iirc
