Well, that's good news. The more I continue to watch the weirder the idea of her not being in it became, particularly since Jackson Douglas is coming back. I started to wonder if they were just faking us out.

Ha, it didn't occur to me until this rewatch that Jess was basically a proto-April ("We need some fresh blood for the second season...hey, I know, maybe Luke has a nephew he's never mentioned before!")

Gawdamn, I feel like I've contracted a low-grade form of progeria compared to these ageless people who were frozen in time fifteen years ago. The only one who looks appreciably different is Miss Patty, who appears to have lost a lot of weight.

alexis bledel has always looked about 5–10 years younger than she actually is. i looked it up, and yeah, she's 35.
― wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 12 April 2016 03:04 (eight years ago) link
My favorite Gilmore Girl-ism - made up example:
A: What is the matter with her? Did you see her? B: This box sure is heavy. A: She wasn't like this yesterday.B: Boy, does he expect me to move it all the way over there?A: I call her and she doesn't answer!B: There should be laws against making people lift boxes this heavy.
What's the name of this trope?
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 18:03 (eight years ago) link
I think we should call it a Sherman-Palladino
― Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 18:25 (eight years ago) link
isn't that called "cross-talk"? -- there's a lot of it in "his girl friday," which is think is probably the ur-text for gilmore girls.
― wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 18:37 (eight years ago) link
I guess. Can't find it clearly defined, though. Tvtropes is surprisingly rubbish at this.
― abcfsk, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 18:59 (eight years ago) link
it's not just a tv trope, though -- it's a staple of screwball comedy. you'll also find it in robert altman films, albeit in a different, less staccato manner.
― wizzz! (amateurist), Tuesday, 3 May 2016 19:06 (eight years ago) link
I think cross-talk is just rapidfire dialogue. I don't know what to call the case where the characters don't seem to hear each other. Reminds me of Beckett a little.
― jmm, Tuesday, 3 May 2016 19:18 (eight years ago) link
Yeah I think 'the Sherman-Palladino' could serve a purpose as label.
xp tvtropes.org cover any recurring thing in fiction in general. But I assume there's little quality control.

Crosstalk means people are talking at the same time. At least in subtitling land that's what it means.

tt is watching all gilmore girls ever and i keep overhearing/seeing it and basically at this point i want rory to suffer some sort of great misfortune, she really is the most irritating privileged little shit in the history of television, why does she even exist and why do people keep doing nice things for her, the show is completely ruined by her character
― imago, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 20:22 (eight years ago) link

YOU'RE completely ruined by your character

I loved the show, but in retrospect I wish there had been one episode where a stranger comes to town and wonders why an entire community has decided to turn a single teenage girl into their collective object of adoration - sort of like the Frank Grimes episode of The Simpsons.

xp otm! I've never heard a character in any show so frequently be heralded as 'amazing'.
Rory is the worst, but GG in general is untouchable. Back off imago!
― tangenttangent, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 23:00 (eight years ago) link
I guess it is nice that the unwanted child of a teen mum can be portrayed as the princess of the town, but born into *so* much privilege even considering that. what about the forgotten, the abandoned daughters of stars hollow. what is for them
― imago, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 23:01 (eight years ago) link
i don't think it's particularly controversial to think rory sucks a lot, even if you like the show

but with age i have realized the best characters objectively are emily and paris

the most interesting character arc of the show was that rory's personality started resembling emily gilmore more and more, no matter how hard lorelei tried to stop it

Emily and Paris are absolutely the best. Also Jess to a lesser extent. But I'm only (!) on season 6 so nervous about what may still happen.
I'm quite surprised how ethically dated it feels. I'm sure Dawson's Creek wouldn't hold up this badly.

It makes me feel old and grumpy as well. Those young people wear their ignorance so proudly, and I really dislike podcasts (and companion shows like Talking Dead or whatever) that have guests on who have clearly watched this one episode and nothing else.
That said, their interview shows are great. I particularly enjoyed the one with Sam Phillips and Helen Pai, and the one with Jane Espenson.
― trishyb, Friday, 28 October 2016 06:52 (seven years ago) link
Yeah I used Gilmore Guys to get a rewatch going last year and I did get my rewatch going but had to abandon the podcast. They harp on and on about how sympathetic the character motivations seem to them. I'm sure they're nice guys though, and yeah, it was nice to hear interviews with various members of cast and staff.
― abcfsk, Friday, 28 October 2016 07:24 (seven years ago) link
yeah they seem v chill and nice - i feel kinda bad!! but half the references go over their heads and i'm like "oh you adorable children pls shut up"
i will check out the interview episodes
