Common-sense suggestions on how to run his campaign more traditionally (i.e. in a way that has any chance of success)

His success so far has been unconventionally attained. He can claim (not without justification) that the "traditional" way is the way of losing losers who lose. Why should he listen to traditional advisers advising him on how things are traditionally done?

(All this said, of course, as a bitter foe who hopes he doesn't suddenly acquite a chance of success.)

(And, pace DJP, with an awareness of how awful his candidacy is, win or lose - but his losing abysmally is surely better, right?)

Are you guys saying that merely because you want it to be true? There is still an entire general election campaign ahead of us and Trump has proven that anything possible and nobody is safe from evil.

this. it’s incredibly unlikely he’ll win, but i hope nobody gets too cocky or comfortable.

i want Hillary to win this by 20% or more*

*no, that doesn't mean I'm enthusiastic about Hillary. this is, sadly perhaps, no longer about her.

DJP, i fear the effect of trump even when (and before) he loses, but i don't think that individual incident really makes the case for his influence.

It's probably not fair to tar his children with his noxious level of eevil; they didn't choose their father. But I'm sorry, dude on the right does kinda look like a lamprey.

that these kids can have lived with this monster for decades and still endorse his candidacy suggests they are as fucked as he is (or nearly).

wizzz! (amateurist), Monday, 20 June 2016 17:56 (eight years ago) link

I have seen many presidential campaigns where a victory by one of the two major party candidates was extremely depressing or angering. This is the first I have seen where a victory by one of the 'major' candidates would set all my alarm bells screaming at once. It would feel a bit like sitting in an airplane with smoke and flames pouring from all its engines.

Well here's a new one:

http://theresurgent.com/donald-trump-is-new-coke/

I had an uncle who loved New Coke. The product certainly appealed to a particular sort. He was a routine liar who wound up in jail at one point. It takes all kinds and New Coke appealed to that kind. Trump too appeals to a particular kind of angry and aggrieved white guy who thinks everyone else agrees with him when really 70% of the nation does not.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 June 2016 18:51 (eight years ago) link

That's a spicy take!

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 20 June 2016 18:53 (eight years ago) link

I really need him to play out this idea that New Coke was exclusively designed for criminals.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 June 2016 18:56 (eight years ago) link

erickson is so hapless at this point that "I had an uncle who loved New Coke" still reads like a huge self-own

goole, Monday, 20 June 2016 18:59 (eight years ago) link

See, those first four sentences would make an excellent start to a monologue or novel in different hands.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 20 June 2016 19:00 (eight years ago) link

like fresca? you mean fizzy and light on the tongue with a harsh chemical aftertaste?

Was there ever a soft drink marketed exclusively to bigots and xenophobes?

Manspread Mann (Old Lunch), Monday, 20 June 2016 19:06 (eight years ago) link

I thought that was the cast for the new Edd Ed & Eddy movie

Evan, Monday, 20 June 2016 19:11 (eight years ago) link

They should do a limited run of New Coke just to clarify for those of us who weren't there what the big deal was.

jmm, Monday, 20 June 2016 19:11 (eight years ago) link

I never drink cola, but as I recall one widespread opinion was that New Coke was formulated to taste like Pepsi. as if taste matters in a cola drink.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 20 June 2016 19:15 (eight years ago) link

Taste doesn't matter in a cola drink if you never drink cola obviously! New Coke sucked, as does Pepsi.

New Coke was fine tbh, ppl were just mad because it was sweeter than they expected

volumetric god rays (DJP), Monday, 20 June 2016 19:22 (eight years ago) link

no it sucked

I thought they were mad because of fears of discontinuing Coca Cola Classic in favor of New Coke

brimstead, Monday, 20 June 2016 19:27 (eight years ago) link

They did discontinue it! It wasn't "Coca Cola Classic" until they brought it back in response to the New Coke bomb.

Andrew Farrell, Monday, 20 June 2016 19:30 (eight years ago) link

IIRC New Coke fell out of favor when the company started floating the question of whether Pepsi was even really a cola and suggesting that it might even secretly be a citrus-flavored soda in disguise.

I try to be kind to how people present themselves, but I look at that picture with three of the children and wonder, other than Ivanka, why it looks like something is wrong with their faces

μpright mammal (mh), Monday, 20 June 2016 19:57 (eight years ago) link

People forget about the Pepsi challenge, in which Pepsi clearly and definitively trounced Coke, which is why Coke rejiggered the formula to be more Pepsi-like.

Anyone else remember the Gen X OK Soda?
