That New Yorker article gets closest to the thread that's been running through my mind - that the thing that has made Britain (or parts of it) a dynamic, exciting, multicultural place are broadly the same factors that have made it a jingoistic, exceptionalist, mistrustful and belligerent place. to be fair to stephen crabb mp he had to clarify that he doesn't believe in or endorse the "gay cure" only because he has links to an organisaton that financially supported a conference on the subject
