It's not that different from our current board description!

i find the bernie-johnson flip useful because it indicates what percentage of bernie supporters don't actually believe in any of bernie's policies, but were only supporting him because of personal animosity against clinton

i've found that a number of bernie supporters are not necessarily animated entirely by clinton animus (though that's likely present) but by not necessarily progressive ideologies, such as 'anger at the establishment' (in which case even a switch to trump is possibly justifiable), social libertarianism (pot smokers), anti-war/anti-imperialism (the last two both make sense switching to johnson), anti-status quo/accelerationism, and even special snowflakeism (in which case opposition to mainstreamism is the animating factor). i think it's dumb to go from bernie to johnson or trump bc it indicates a lack of substantive ideology/policy but there are somewhat understandable reasons.

"i find the bernie-johnson flip useful because it indicates what percentage of bernie supporters don't actually believe in any of bernie's policies, but were only supporting him because of personal animosity against clinton. looks like roughly a third or so."

I think personal animosity is maybe a reach (although I'm sure there is some). At least a portion of that support is equivalent to Perot's for example which had more to do with perception that he was "more independent" or "not status quo" than it did with any specific policy positions. Same for the Trump frankly.

One bad call from barely losing to (Alex in SF), Thursday, 14 July 2016 16:05 (seven years ago) link

basically the grown-up voters are going to have to take the reigns to keep trump out of power. unfortunately there are a lot of people in this country who aren't mature enough to make political decisions that will maintain stability, keep the economy somewhat running, make even incremental steps towards preserving the environment, etc. luckily the latter group are not the likeliest voters. if you hate the system and want it destroyed/think it's completely corrupted, generally you're less likely to participate in it.

akm, Thursday, 14 July 2016 17:28 (seven years ago) link

vilsack though? his name hadn't even come up until now. frankly I don't really care, all her options seem pretty good.

Pence is reprehensible. Usually with a republican I can find at least one thing about them I can agree with. Not here.

not sure what voters he expects Pence will help him pick up.

Pence is liked by the Kochs, so money is what he might help pick up.

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Thursday, 14 July 2016 17:34 (seven years ago) link

ok, i'll defend the indefensible here: when pence passed that stupid rfra, he caved under immense economic pressure from the business community- pat mccrory didn't. so, you know, he's not completely committed to destroying capitalism for ideological purposes, unlike many other republican leaders.

The VP's name is really important: how it sounds, how it looks on a bumper sticker or a yard sign. Someone named 'Vilsack' will never be picked.

I understand the impulse for Trump to pick Pence — an experienced pol, in good standing with conservatives, and not much of a lightning rod, at least not yet (the Left tends to make any GOP pick a lightning rod). But Trump’s running mate will have to be extremely deft at explaining away and deflecting Trump controversies. There is no reason to believe that Pence will be good at this, and I’m guessing he won’t be. Christie (comfortable at defending anything) and especially Newt (one of the most glib politicians of the last 30 years) would be much better by this metric. They both have downsides. No one will be excited by Christie, certainly not conservatives. Newt is famously ill-disciplined. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the Trump team thinks it’s getting a safe choice in Pence and then when he inevitably has trouble defending Trump (he has never operated on this kind of national stage), it won’t look so safe anymore.

i will say this: mike pence's name looks fabulous on all the "PENCE MUST GO" yard signs that have been all over indy for the past year.

and yeah after 1844 i don't think anybody else is going to go for frelinghuysen as their veep pick.

Time for a quick reality check. Despite the hysteria from the political class and the media, smoking doesn't kill. In fact, 2 out of every three smokers does not die from a smoking related illness and 9 out of ten smokers do not contract lung cancer.
