best thing tonight was probably Eric Andre getting a bunch of screentime during Carson's speech

David Axelrod's very good on strategy: he's perplexed they put Carson and Lucifer on after the son.

You got to ponder how loco the right can get if and when Hillary wins. It is not like you can casually walk back to the negotiations on various issues when you describe your opponent as Lucifer itself or casually state their body language states they are working with 'our' enemies.

best possible outcome is that the republicans focus, both before and after the election, in destroying each other in rage rather than attempting to launch some sort of coordinated attack on clinton.

people learn from their experiences. when obama was elected he was genuinely willing to work together with congressional republicans, and has gotten no end of shit from the left over it since. clinton will certainly make the right noises about "bipartisanship" but it will all be lies.

stretch goal for clinton is to get a senate majority. this is going to be important not for the purpose of passing legislation- that's out of the question- but to get her judicial appointments approved. if clinton gets elected the next step for the republicans is going to be to (a) impeach clinton over the email thing and (b) block all judicial appointments going forwards.

The bald Phil Collins impersonator cash grab (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 20 July 2016 14:08 (seven years ago) link

Some fascinating reports on local NPR the last few days, about how so many Illinois Trump delegates had no idea what they signed up for, what it actually meant to go to Cleveland, and are apparently completely disinterested in anything the state party has to say to them. At the same time, there are a number of high-profile Illinois politicians who skipped the convention altogether, including one of our Senators, our governor, and a whole bunch of other people as well at least on the fence. So you get local Republican people not interested in Trump trying to encourage delegates only interested in Trump into supporting the Republican party at large, but I guess the Trump supporters are not interested in that at all. They just like the big spectacle. Call them t-shirt cannon Republicans. Anyway, perhaps bodes well for the Republicans doing really poorly down ticket, given how many lifelong Republicans don't like Trump and how many new Trump supporters only like Trump.
