I mean, obviously cruz is a disgusting villain, but at least he knows how to give a speech. From a pure delivery standpoint, that garbage was many times better than anything else I've seen over the last few days

Eric Trump like this guy from the Sound of Music: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/e1/5c/40/e15c40a95c9c08801d707ce6994a2cb0.jpg

Matthew Cooper

@mattizcoop

If you let a cribbed speech make it to the podium why would you be any better at vetting someone who won't endorse.

man, it sure seems that if cruz hadn't pissed off every key GOP official on a personal level, he would totally be the GOP nominee

ya p good chance imo

he even mentioned Alton Sterling!

"CNN’s Manu Raju is reporting that Heidi Cruz was escorted out by security because the crowd was so rowdy and angered by Cruz’s speech. One Trump supporter shouted “Goldman Sachs!” at her, according to him."

I've been hearing for days he wouldn't endorse--I don't know, I don't think that was a surprise. I thought the deal to let him speak--no endorsement, but stay clear of Never-Trump maneuvering--was struck weeks ago.

clemenza, Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:10 (seven years ago) link

And they seemed to try to keep him away from the 10:00 hour...and I'm not sure if they succeeded--did that awkward finish happen before or after 10:00?

Has Trump ever specified the exact point in time that America was great?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:14 (seven years ago) link

I think it's a real person, Time confirmed someone with that name attended the university of Utah and the school of American ballet, which is what was in that speaker bio that got cited initially. I think it's just someone basically without an online footprint.

well if it is, then they violated a FEC regulation. who needs to follow rules though

frogbs, Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:14 (seven years ago) link

@EWErickson
SOURCE: The Trump camp knew this morning Cruz would not endorse and told Cruz's camp they'd orchestrate booing if he refused.

oh shit . . . not booing

so the trump campaign is so incompetent they feel it's more important for them to put cruz on and orchestrate boos/walk out at the end of his speech to try and make him look bad, rather than.. negotiate some kind of resolution that wouldn't make this the big story tomorrow because everyone looked ridiculous??

Obviously I'm not a trump voter, but to me it seems super-desperate to have all your kids, night after night, endorse you at the convention. Like, doesn't it seem transparently pathetic? Especially since it's not like they have distinguished records of their own, they're all just rich kids who work for their dad.

From a rhetorical point of view, Gingrich has been the best tonight. And my boo at NRO agrees:

Jay Nordlinger ‏@jaynordlinger 2m2 minutes ago Manhattan, NY

One thing about Newt: He speaks in normal cadences. Not in stagey, slo-mo applause lines. This is a first-rate performer. (And ex-prof.)

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:30 (seven years ago) link

Probably one of many reason he couldn't be picked as VP. Pence is going to be so boring.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:32 (seven years ago) link

Disappointing. Where's the vitriol? Where's the incendiary rabble-rousing? Where's Newt? I think he spent himself in 2012

21 min

27 min

29 min
Arena screens flickering during Eric Trump speech

35 min

35 min
Cruz doesn't endorse Trump. Huge boos

36 min

40 min

44 min
Cruz backs plan to build border wall

48 min
Cruz: "Gay or straight, Bill of Rights protects ... all of us"

53 min

I honestly don't understand why the audience is so livid with Cruz. Unless they assumed the widely-discussed non-endorsement was just a ruse and he'd dramatically endorse tonight. This wasn't a surprise!

clemenza, Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:38 (seven years ago) link

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:42 (seven years ago) link

I thought Ryan still hasn't technically endorsed either--that he parsed it with some kind of vote-for-Trump/not-officially-endorsing statement.

clemenza, Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:44 (seven years ago) link

oh cool Reagan

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:45 (seven years ago) link

Strange pivot from Reagan to "my wonderful wife Karen Pence."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:46 (seven years ago) link

xp @clemenza yeah, but it wasn't just a matter of cruz not endorsing, he did everything he could to emphasize he wasn't endorsing short of explicitly saying it. There was a very pretty obvious element of "fuck you" in his speech, i.e. having this big pause at the point where he could have endorsed, and then just pushing forward while mocking the NY delegation.

intheblanks, Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:48 (seven years ago) link

9 min
Official yelled at Cruz, had to be restrained

10 min
Convention-goer calls Cruz a disgrace to his face

nomar, Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:49 (seven years ago) link

I was just listening, not watching--I think I missed some of the nuances. Good for Cruz then, I was totally in favor of sabotage tonight.

Has Pence officially endorsed? It'd be nice if splits hairs like Ryan has.

clemenza, Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:49 (seven years ago) link

yeah, I feel like if I hadn't watched it I may not have fully realized what cruz was doing

katy tur from nbc on twitter: "Trump campaign expected Cruz to talk for 10 minutes. Cruz' prepared remarks went 9 minutes. He spoke for 23 minutes."

He even called into question whether, as president, he would automatically extend the security guarantees that give the 28 members of NATO the assurance that the full force of the United States military has their back.

For example, asked about Russia’s threatening activities that have unnerved the small Baltic States that are the most recent entrants into NATO, Mr. Trump said that if Russia attacked them, he would decide whether to come to their aid only after reviewing whether those nations “have fulfilled their obligations to us.”

arts and crafts THIS GUY (daria-g), Thursday, 21 July 2016 02:57 (seven years ago) link

The basic question (Harry Enten): "Can someone explain to me why the Trump people allowed Cruz to talk tonight? They knew Cruz wasn’t going to endorse Trump. They — and we — had Cruz’s prepared remarks. Did Trump’s people think that Cruz was going to have a change of heart? I’m not sure why the Trump campaign would bank on that. There are Cruz’s ideological disagreements with Trump, but it’s also worth remembering that Trump intimated that Cruz’s father was involved in the John F. Kennedy assassination and attacked Cruz’s wife.

So, why give Cruz a prime-time speaking slot?"
