considering that maybe his behavior tonight shdnt come as too much of a surprise

lag∞n, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:10 (eight years ago) link

he wasn't being an asshole the way he normally is, though. usually he is sneaky and underhanded and does this whole cruz-sader schtick.

tonight he was blunt and dare i say principled. new phase in his moral development, although i'm sure he turned back into a slime monster at midnight

Treeship, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:12 (eight years ago) link

idk feel like he must do a lot of blunt asshole moves to get that many ppl to hate him theyre just usually behind closed doors

lag∞n, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:14 (eight years ago) link

the real tell he was up to something is that he didn't even mention clinton

I think this is part of what made the speech work as an ultimate "Fuck You"--the whole speech felt like something the nominee would give, focusing mainly on American and conservative values and including some specific "uniter not a divider" moments (mentioning Alton Sterling, including references to the rights of gays and muslims). And Cruz didn't have any of the "lock her up" red meat his fellow defeated nominees focused on, which is honestly part of the job if you're speaking at the convention. It was a speech specifically written to make Cruz look presidential.

To give a speech like that, which was also better delivered just about any other speech this convention, and THEN not endorse Trump and tell people to vote their conscience, was pretty cold-blooded.

intheblanks, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:14 (eight years ago) link

granted there was still plenty of dividing in the speech--he cheerfully endorsed the border wall, iirc

intheblanks, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:15 (eight years ago) link

i mean to get everyone who shd be yr allies to hate you youve prob got to have the full toolbox of asshole techniques

lag∞n, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:15 (eight years ago) link

its so crazy that hes made it as far as he has while alienating everyone

lag∞n, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:15 (eight years ago) link

But as someone said earlier, the truly principled thing would have been a repudiation (causing a veritable riot, based on the reaction to what he did do), or a refusal to attend...he kind of split the middle. Artfully, yes. I don't know. Lots of analysis the next 24 hours.

clemenza, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:16 (eight years ago) link

i think this was better than a refusal to attend. Kasich's not attending, and while that may be the wiser move for "Kasich 2020," no one really cares about it.

intheblanks, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:17 (eight years ago) link

i think "vote your conscience" counts as a repudiation xp

otm, I said this in one of the other threads, but to me the best thing about this election has been the multiple "everyone from every stage of Ted Cruz's life hates him" hit pieces, all crammed full of specific details that make him look like a total weasel.

intheblanks, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:20 (eight years ago) link

yeah its incredible i dont think i ever seen anyone sufficiently explain the mechanism of his rise, like he was crazily successful in the private sector too

lag∞n, Thursday, 21 July 2016 05:21 (eight years ago) link

(xposts) I meant just as the principled thing to do, not as tactics or what'll get the most attention. Staying home makes it clear you think Trump is unacceptable. Showing up and speaking, and theatrically/artfully not endorsing but not unambiguously saying don't vote for this guy ("vote your conscience" might be close, but will he then go on record and say "I'm voting for Hillary because Donald Trump cannot be allowed to be president"?), I'd count that as less principled, if you believe that's what motivated Cruz. Personal pique about the way Trump belittled him, that's different--that I do count as principled in a way.

trump team def had the speech in advance whether they read or understood it tho

lag∞n, Thursday, 21 July 2016 06:08 (eight years ago) link

my guess is they didn't read it. more charitably, maybe they did read it, but thought cruz's tone would be more conciliatory. Like the lack of a formal endorsement would come across as just saving face, not an "aggressive" non-endorsement.

intheblanks, Thursday, 21 July 2016 06:26 (eight years ago) link

Are Trump's team good at reading speeches before they get delivered?

Mark G, Thursday, 21 July 2016 07:12 (eight years ago) link

Or Cruz will be found dead some time in the next 24 hours.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 21 July 2016 08:36 (eight years ago) link

all this talk on cruz's political future is contingent on the republican party having a political future. this is a party that literally agrees on nothing except that hillary clinton is a criminal and needs to be locked up. they'll clean up on the 2018 midterms with that, especially since most of america agrees with them, but i don't see any way this total divide on basic political principles does not become a permanent rift.

how could trump win with his own party so divided

Mordy, Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:23 (eight years ago) link

By getting more votes than his opponent.

a huge segment of the evangelicals are very uncomfortable with/genuinely against prosperity gospel types. like, they publish pamphlets about how prosperity gospel is heresy. I know because I buy these pamphlets, because I can't help myself.

Right but the Party is not a plurality of the vote, or anything near it - you win by getting people whom aren't members of your party to win, and there is evidence that such people are even less interested in intraparty matters than ever before.

Also what is there to solve about the salute? It's not a complicated gesture, it's not designed for competitions where people mark you a 6 a 7 and a 9 for how well you managed the intricacies. It is what it is, and that's one there.

trump may bring in some independents but he is not going to replace the GOP base w/ trump democrats or new voters. he needs the party behind him.

trump does seem to be bringing in a bunch of new single-issue voters. that issue being trump.

needs to start using "cult of personality" as his entrance theme

Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony said (contenderizer), Thursday, 21 July 2016 13:52 (eight years ago) link

so is this like paying the mob for protection?

NATO countries are expected to spend 2% of GDP on the military. Estonia (which in the fantasy world geo-political analysts live in is the most likely to be attacked) is one of five countries that actually does. Lithuania and Latvia spend less than 1%. It looks more like an effort to show a domestic audience that America expects other countries to pay their fair share than any significant change of policy on what would happen if war broke out.

feel like we should take this to the christianity thread but there's so much fascinating about evangelicals beyond their bad photoshop skills. like the argument against Bwana Jesus should not be a difficult one to make and somehow they can't help themselves and start saying that john the baptist was against "visions". oh also they do a great job at conveying the message that christianity is centered around the teachings of john the baptist, who looks suspiciously similar to charles manson?
