I hope you're athletes are as funny and undisciplined as ours. Two cyclists were interviewed about the silver medal, one said it was 'fucking sindsygt (insane)', the other went 'yeah... hum... it's... fuuuuuck...' :)

Hearing the crowd completely TRASH Hope Solo every time she has the ball is one hell of a thing.

Archery is lit. Loved watching the final between Korea and USA.
What's the big fuss about Hope Solo? Am I missing something?
― Van Horn Street, Saturday, 6 August 2016 20:47 (seven years ago) link
Solo overreacted to Zika fears. So now the home folks are giving her their thoughts (booing whenever she has the ball and screaming "ZIKA!" whenever she does a goal kick).
― Ned Raggett, Saturday, 6 August 2016 20:50 (seven years ago) link
Also, it IS Hope Solo.
waiting on USA basketball with stronger bated-breath anticipation than the frank ocean album tbh (even tho it'll prob be a blowout)

She can't have overreacted that much given she's at the tournament.

That bike race looked absolutely insane, there doesn't appear to be any footage of what actually caused three riders to clatter off the road but the aftermath looked grim.
― Matt DC, Sunday, 7 August 2016 11:53 (seven years ago) link
Deeply grim. The women's road race today could be just as chancy.
Catching up with tennis right now. Anything else of big interest on?
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 7 August 2016 14:59 (seven years ago) link
As for what caused the crashes, combination of steep descents and rapidly changing light/shade, I suspect. Commentators were saying it wasn't a case of if crashes would happen but when.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 7 August 2016 15:11 (seven years ago) link
those shaded parts of roads in hotter countries can get real greasy too, which makes coming off at speed when cornering much more likely

Fiji, who lost 8-0 to Korea in the last game, are leading Mexico 1-0 at half time in the football.
― On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Sunday, 7 August 2016 16:48 (seven years ago) link
And conceded five in the second half.
They were only one down at half-time vs Korea too, but conceded three in the space of 90sec around the hour mark. I kind of zone out of meetings after that long tbf.

Yeah that crash was HORRIFIC. Anyone have further news? Hell of a run in to the end for the top four.
Enjoying some of the archery. Love how everyone's default mode is concentration combined with 'I will kill you now.'

Mack Horton, the Australian who kicked off a promising meet for his country by winning the 400-meter freestyle, was addressing the topic of Sun Yang, the Chinese swimmer whom he beat for the gold — and who has generally perturbed him, first for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug in 2014, then by splashing water in his lane during a training session before the Olympics began.
“I just have a problem with athletes who have tested positive and are still competing,” Horton told the assembled press.

The thing with Yulia Efimova is a complete farce. Implicated in the WADA-report, busted for using Meldonium (her second offence) and still allowed in at last notice. Nobody can possibly believe that she's clean.
― Frederik B, Monday, 8 August 2016 16:15 (seven years ago) link
Idk why they let Russian althetes with prior bans compete in swimming but banning people for using meldonium when you have little to no idea how long it stays in the body doesn't seem particularly fair.
― On a Raqqa tip (ShariVari), Monday, 8 August 2016 16:29 (seven years ago) link
What's not particularly fair is Russia having a state organized doping scheme which apparently even included using the FSB to keep doping agencies away from athletes.
