According to CPR this morning, today is the CTA's 60th birthday.

Srsly.
― KitCat, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:13 (sixteen years ago) link
It is aging in dog years apparently. No 60-year old should be so broke down.
― Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:14 (sixteen years ago) link
the CTA is 60 years old, the infrastructure is much much older. it dates back to the time when all the lines were owned by independent companies.
― chicago kevin, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:18 (sixteen years ago) link
privatized lolz
― kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:23 (sixteen years ago) link
According to the historian they had on to accompany part of the story, the CTA paid for itself (no state funding) for about the first half of its life, up until the 70s or so.

so what's happening now is... nostalgia?
― kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:26 (sixteen years ago) link
i know that the jarvis stop has supposedly not been renovated since like 1908 or something. no wonder it smells strongly of wee.
― La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:27 (sixteen years ago) link
I know that the infrastructure is olde, but I am taking this opportunity to express frustration through a Lazy Zing.
― Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link
xpost 100-year-old wee, no less
― kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link
People just don't wee like they did in the good old days
― kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link
I don't understand what you mean by nostalgia. There was a Northwestern civil engineer on the program too, he said the cost of operating two 24-hour lines (maintainence is more expensive and slower), white flight (eroded the sales tax base that paid for part of transit + less fares) and the emergence of private automobiles led to funding crises. Probably some mismanagement in there too, I'd guess.

that and stupid projects like the bullet train to o'hare that will shave 10 WHOLE MINUTES off of your trip!
― La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 19:30 (sixteen years ago) link
The Reader tore Daley a new one over that project.

hey can someone tell me why that boring dude got a huge cover story this week? i'm sure he's a great guy, but it read like a small town paper that had nothing better to write about. it was worse than the one about the lady who drank drano.

I was profiled in that same issue with the Drano-drinking lady. Guy last weekend, he's tied in to Wilco and the Hideout and therefore tangentially tied in with the Reader as well. I haven't read the article, but he's a good sideman.

I read part of it. It was better than I expected--when I first saw the cover I didn't even pick one up.

I'm glad he finally got serious about music now that he's 37.

I signed up for a new savings account now that I'm Captain Fiscal Responsibility. It automatically draws a set amount from your checking into a special 7% APY account. At the anniversary date it dumps it all into your regular savings and begins earning 2% -- 1.08% more than a regular savings would. (You can't withdraw it before the year anniversary.
Then you have the option to either leave it in the regular savings or withdraw it.
Or I guess you could make another deposit of up to $500 into the 7% account and start over.

Seriously, that's the next thread. All in favor?

― Laurel, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link
That sounds complicated. I'm opening an ING account tomorrow, BOIS.
― KitCat, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link
It's really not complicated at all. It took less than 10 minutes to open up.
I am having them take out $75 on the 18th of the month. That's all there is to it. On Octover 1, 2008 I make a decision--leave tonight or live and die this way.
