only seen Katyn and his war trilogy, A Generation, Canal, Ashes and Diamonds, but those 3 were great.

Kanal is one of the greatest films about war ever made.

Anyone interested in the postwar region would get a lot from Man of Marble and Man of Iron as well.

Now that's an obit

I hear from this arsehole again, he's going in the river (James Morrison), Friday, 14 October 2016 04:36 (seven years ago) link

The thing was way too reverential and unchallenging and, to my credit, if that's the appropriate expression, the title was indeed totally unmemorable: https://mubi.com/films/greenwich-village-music-that-defined-a-generation

RIP. There is a great story from Leiber and Stoller about how that song got recorded. Maybe you already know it.

part of obit. Love that song

Robert “Big Sonny” Edwards of The Intruders -- the soul vocal group best known for the chart-topping R&B single “Cowboys to Girls” -- has died. After suffering a sudden heart attack at his Philadelphia home, the 74-year-old Edwards died at a local hospital on Oct. 15.

The news of Edwards’ death was announced Tuesday (Oct. 18) by Philadelphia International Records co-founders Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff

Yes, this is a shock. Perhaps my favourite comic book artist. I had been thinking of him this week. Now rereading BLOCK MANIA to which he made a telling contribution.

gah, I was just reading his wiki page last night for some reason and I don't think I'd ever realised quite how young he was - apparently he was only 16 when he got his first professional work.

there's photo of him here with Brett Ewnis around the time they set up Deadline together, horrible that they've both gone so early (Jamie Hewlett in the centre)

Dead Comics Society?

Madame Bob George (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 23 October 2016 17:15 (seven years ago) link

the bbc have been repeating Hi-de-Hi! recently, the early episodes of that are some of the best stuff ever. I'm kind of morbidly curious to to see either of these:

A solo effort, Room Service, written without Croft for Thames Television in 1979, and High Street Blues (1989), co-written with Robin Carr, according to John Oliver writing for the BFI Screenonline website, "remain contenders for the title of worst British sitcom".[6]

but there doesn't seem to be anything on youtube

RIP Jimmy P

I feel terrible, but on my way through the office just now I told a co-worker "Pete Burns of Dead or Alive died." He said, "Really?" and I replied. "Yeah. Oh, so I guess that answers that question!"

Have to admit I never heard Kay Starr before tonight, but her voice seems to split the difference between Patsy Cline and Dinah Washington, which is fine by me.
