Boom

the tightening is plateauing (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 14 October 2016 19:53 (seven years ago) link

No no. I agree that this is extremely fascinating and interesting. I was intrigued when I heard the podcast. I was just wondering if anyone was angry about the death hoax, since sometimes that's how people react. It's difficult to gauge an internet community, and I just didn't know how y'all felt about it.

It's not like it was a cancer-blogging-child death hoax

agree w all here that the luna saga (which I was totally unaware of at the time) is a way more dramatic story

Οὖτις, Friday, 14 October 2016 20:19 (seven years ago) link

i only know the vague outline but it does seem pretty dramatic. that nyer story about the catfishing new orleans phone operator reminded me of it.

Personally I'm not at all angry about the hoax. As people said above, the hoax part is only from, like, last year I think? And although I was sad about the possibility of it being true I don't think anyone was personally affected by it. We've had active members of the board die, so an object of a protomeme is not going to have the same impact. And it's not like this whole messageboard is about the picture and we thought about it every day - this place is huge and we have many other petty things to talk about. If you're new you probably haven't had a chance to participate in polling every single fucking list from every single fucking music magazine yet. (NB even though I think this is ridiculous I generally like the ILM polls and certainly don't begrudge anyone polling anything they want to, unlike some of the hardline grouches here.)

Listening to this podcast made me very nostalgic and emotional about ilx!

they all use microphones that make you sound like ira glass

Literally for the past 10 years, this thread keeps ILX a part of my Internets

i would like a podcast about pplains and sunny and their children and arbitrary geographical borders and surviving cancer and english dialects and bobby petrino and david berman (but not his dad)

mookieproof, Saturday, 15 October 2016 04:01 (seven years ago) link

Finished listening a few minutes ago, and now I've been going back over the thread. I was still strictly ILM-only in 2006, so I missed the original frenzy, but I got up to speed later on.

I agree with someone upthread who said you don't have to know anything about the thread or even ILX to think that was a remarkable podcast episode. I applaud the considerable amount of work they put into it.

My wife knows Roxy and Nijoli casually IRL but has never been an ilxor. I have occasionally shown her ILX classix, like Bloomps and this thread. She is also a Reply All fan and likes to listen while doing her morning yoga, which she was doing this morning when this came on. She came into the bedroom to tell me and I said "You mean the photo [Roxy IRL] posted?" She hadn't realized that connection, so now she's all worlds-colliding.

Wow. Familiar with the thread and photo but must've missed all the other photos that were found but long since not showing itt, and the ensuing sherlocking of it all. Great, if slightly unnerving, podcast.

maura, Saturday, 15 October 2016 15:52 (seven years ago) link

This may be common ILX knowledge but the image info in the disappeared follow-up pics upthread have little titles like 'laureljealous' 'hugz' 'takeitalloff' and 'johnfirco_loftus'

kinder, Saturday, 15 October 2016 16:14 (seven years ago) link

oh wait I'm just getting to that bit of the thread.

kinder, Saturday, 15 October 2016 16:18 (seven years ago) link

Just listened to the podcast, I think I would've enjoyed it even without the ILX angle. But having followed the thread for 10 years it's pretty weird to have it exist now in another arena.

The transcript is a rich lode of board descriptions, but this is my favorite: " Just picture pages and pages of black text on a white background; everybody’s trying to outdo each other."

I love this reddit comment so much

Here's a link to the entire message board, if anyone was curious to see. They seem to be freaking out a bit over the podcast release haha.

...because it implies that the So Not Gonna Happen thread is a self-contained, niche-interest message board entirely devoted to that one photo. Wayne's whereabouts have never been far from our minds, but over the past 10 years we've forged friendships and marriages, written SNGH fanfics, indulged in semi-off-topic chitchat to pass the time ("Wayne would definitely be a Trump backer!") and organized meetups complete with SMDH tableau vivants and King of Prussia Hooters pilgrimages. but now we're in a state of turmoil because the Reply All podcast has not only solved the one mystery that made our community worth sustaining, it has also forced us to engage with Reddit and Twitter for the first time, thus spoiling the purity of one of the last isolated pockets of uncontacted Web 1.0 holdouts. sad!

I also wonder if all these 19-year-old Redditors (and even the producers of the podcast) have any real concept of message board culture apart from what they've picked up from off-topic Roblox and Club Penguin forums. I guess ilx is as alien to them as Usenet was to me when I was that age.

Tough listen because the main host has a voice like a Daniel Clowes character (mouth-breath-y, slack jaw, excessive saliva?)... not to mention the Arnold Horschack machine-gun laugh.

It's a voice that made me pine for Starly Kine's if you can believe that.
