I don't know what the Saint-Ex guy is griping about though. He sets up a fancy faux Parisian bistro.. no wonder rich people are gonna hang out there! duh! -- dar1a g

I agree. He was whining that previously the neighborhood only had cheap Salvadorean food. The shame, the shame. The follow-up stuff on him in the 2nd article on Monday was equally annoying. Now he's buying a place on North Capitol close to where he had his Vespa stolen. In 5 or so years he'll be grumbling again.

TOMBOT is a yuppie a-hole, and dont let him make you think otherwise. This is all a clever marketing ruse. Its covert demographic research for a chain of indie "on the fringes of society" 24-hour restaurant specializing in exotic crepes.

Spink, Thursday, 17 November 2005 20:12 (eighteen years ago) link

The yuppification of Tombot has definitely limited our apartment search.

xpost to Brian--thank you! Last night mr. q asked where I ate dinner and I was forced to respond, "uh, some place on 14th and G. Started with a 'C'."

I once made the mistake of talking about "getting into a big row with someone" and pronouncing it ROE. Oh, the shame. I now hesitate to pronounce words I'm not sure about.

I am now quite hungry for cheap Salvadorean food WHY NONE OF THIS IN CLEVELAND PARK?

like it rhymes with "bow." Wait, that doesnt' help. Like it rhymes with "bow-wow" as in doggy or third rate rapping child.

it does seem wrong! But my holier-pronunciation-than-thou Scrabble- geek liberal artsy friends who witnessed this all laughed and laughed like I was some kind of idiot. Fuckers AT LEAST I HAVE A JOB.

Speaking of geeks, how is the Neuro conference going? Or is it over?

quincie, Thursday, 17 November 2005 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Gah. It's over. I was horribly bored during the day. The only good parts were when extremely attractive German men kept approaching me to ask me if I knew US immigration law (??). I was hanging out in our booth next to a dude with a company that sells lab animals, he was pretty cool. He bagged on the Chinese and the Indians and George Bush all in like one sentence and had pictures of guinea pigs and rats. Fuckers kept swiping my pens. Ended yesterday though.

Casa Fiesta (owned by relatives of the people who own El Tamarindo), up Wisconsin Avenue toward Friendship Heights, is still cheap. Although its immediate neighborhood is the next candidate for 800K+ condos.

Saint-Ex guy riding around North Capitol St on his Vespa, why? You live in DC dude! GET ONE HOOPTY

I was house sitting for a World Bank staffer & just ran into old acquaintance last week whose wife is also World Bank staffer/lawyer. He is in LAW SCHOOL and I know him through a college friend who is also in the process of applying to LAW SCHOOL.

Someone I've been working on a website for has the following email address (due to his initials): wtf@FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL.edu

Quincie, try Cafe Paraiso! It's cheap, edible, and bustly, and it's just down from the dread corner of 14th & T NW, though it somehow escaped the attention of the Post reporter. Last time I ate there, the other tables in my dining room were:

1) a hard-ass bunch of young Salvadoran guys with spiky sideburns and neck tattoos,
2) three cops boozing it up with their mistresses (it was a Friday),
3) four bears in sleeveless flannel shirts, just up from Logan Circle, and
4) one gorgeous drag queen with a pencil mustache.

DC is a small town, isn't it. I probably shouldn't post about teh job on teh Internets. (No actual complaints about the job, though.)

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 01:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Eh, but you're pretty much OTM about every other person here being in law school. The FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL that you spoke of is at least 5x the size of the nearest Top 10 competitor, so that may have something to do with it. You can't fart without a law student sniffing it.

By the way, I searched the account database for an otm@FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL.EDU or lol@FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL.EDU or pwn@FAMOUSLAWSCHOOL.EDU, but those aren't in there. Said institution started doing alpha-numeric combos for addresses a few years back.

Re: DC being a small town...ok it was weird enough when it turned out a girl I work with who handles the HR stuff for my group is good friends with someone that Tom works with and is friends with. But yesterday, sitting in my office, a girl comes in with a pile of paperwork to give me and a coworker and we kind of stare at each other and realize...WE WERE BOTH BUYING WEDDING DRESSES IN THE SAME SHOP AT THE SAME TIME 2 WEEKS EARLIER. She works on the same floor as me! WTF???

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Serious question: is the plural form "BlackBerrys" or "BlackBerries"?

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:24 (eighteen years ago) link

i think it's Blackberrys. congratulations ally and tom. you will also be right near the 42 bus, which rules. mostly the red line is all you need, but buses are fun. also, i really like the wine store near the dupont metro. and there's a chipotle! never go to melody records though.

The apartment is right off where they do the farmer's market on Sundays, for reference point.

I'm at the market pretty much each and every Sunday. I usually park on R near Teaism. If I weren't such a lazy shit I would ride my bike instead of drive, but parking is usually easy on Sunday a.m.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh really??? I plan to do a lot of my shopping there for produce, everything looked so great there. I honestly had no idea it was even there. After we move in, you should stop by on a Sunday and we can get bubble tea and, uh, produce I guess.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:38 (eighteen years ago) link

Wow, Dupont, very nice. I haven't been to the farmer's market. Of course, I should prob go to Eastern Market as it's quite close.. is the Dupont one super expensive?

I have to get my DC tags so I can start taking the 90 bus instead of driving back and forth across the entire city every day. (I can't afford the $$ for my DC tags until I get paid.. luckily I've found a nice parking spot across the street from work with a broken meter..)

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:39 (eighteen years ago) link

Eastern Market has some great meat. I think, now, I will make more of an effort to go there and of course no effort required for farmer's market. I usually use Safeway's delivery service for groceries but sometimes that doesn't work out so hot for produce and meats (though honestly it doesn't work out as badly as you'd assume, either, Safeway does a good job overall packing stuff and keeping the temperature correct). The Dupont one didn't seem super expensive though, no.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Apparently last sunday while we were wandering around the farmer's market Nicole Kidman was also doing the same.

Darla I still have to get my DC license--we should meet up at the Georgetown DMV!

The farmer's market can be quite pricey if you aren't disciplined, but good ingredients from actual local farmers are one of those things for which I'm willing to pay a premium (file under "stupid little things your a snob about"). Besides, it's almost always cheaper to cook at home than eat out.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:48 (eighteen years ago) link

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I think that now we live half a block from the metro escalators and no longer have to traverse stairs and hallways to wash clothing and you are talking so much about grocery adventures that I will finally go ahead and achieve my longtime dream of getting enormously fat, like Mr. Pipe-Smoking Cessna-Pilot Robot-Owner Karate Republican eHarmony.com Steganography Man.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:51 (eighteen years ago) link

you should totally walk up the escalator. don't be one of the sheep just waiting around the interminable ride up, or worse, one of those situationally unaware not-standing-to-the-right people.
