Death had the chance to kill an entire classic rock band in one calendar year, and instead finished off the Mercury 7? What a fucking dick.

and this section is called boner (Phil D.), Thursday, 8 December 2016 20:43 (seven years ago) link

maybe Death can finish off the Keating 5

Yeager will outlive them all.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 8 December 2016 20:58 (seven years ago) link

which is crazy bc when i saw The Right Stuff as an eight yr old, Chuck Yeager's cameo role was pointed out to me and i remember thinking how crazy it was that Chuck Yeager was IRL an elderly man. in 1983!

BREAKING: Soap Icon Joe Mascolo, known as the legendary Stefano DiMera on #Days of our Lives, has passed away at the age of 87

mookieproof, Friday, 9 December 2016 21:52 (seven years ago) link

NO wow that guy was amazing. hadn't thought of him in years. 87 is plenty old but wow. A big part of my adolescence was the Stefano DiMera storyline.

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 9 December 2016 22:26 (seven years ago) link

omg same, wow

maura, Friday, 9 December 2016 23:00 (seven years ago) link

His parents were immigrants from Italy, Peter Mascolo (1901–2008) and Anna Mascolo (née DeTuccio) (1910–2010), who had their 80th wedding anniversary shortly before his father died.

His only redeeming feature was that he is mortal, so well done 2016 for redeeming him.

this not how I expected to find out that Admiral Ackbar died :(

Number None, Saturday, 10 December 2016 22:32 (seven years ago) link

glad they went for a photo of Jo Cox rather than making her part of the band, her inclusion might have run the risk of tastelessness otherwise

however i was v surprised to find out that Mick the Miller had lived this long

Our Sweet Fredrest (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 10 December 2016 22:39 (seven years ago) link

that's the detail that almost pushes into greatness

banfred bann (wins), Saturday, 10 December 2016 22:40 (seven years ago) link

I can forgive Gill most things for the description he gave of the 2008 Democratic Party National Convention: "so cloyingly sentimental it would give cynicism diabetes."

I spoke to AA Gill when I worked in a callcentre. Slightly disappointed to only be able to report that he was civil, patient and friendly, which not a lot of people were.

This is what Peter Hitchens was like when he happened to be in my place of work.

The Doug Walters of Crime (Tom D.), Sunday, 11 December 2016 01:02 (seven years ago) link

... whereas Lenny Henry was a complete cunt... so I've been told, I haven't had any dealings with him.

satisfying to see boulez carefully aiming before throwing a wad of paper at hilda ogden's head

lmao @ A.A Gill dying of cancer

Houston John (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 11 December 2016 02:07 (seven years ago) link

As low as that bar is P Hitchens seems far more likeable than most of those dead-eyed fascist nihilists at the Mail. It is a shame his politics suck so much because he is an extraordinarily good polemicist/debater.

calzino, Sunday, 11 December 2016 02:22 (seven years ago) link

I find Hitchens' sour-faced miserabilism a lot more tolerable than smirky "contrarians" like Toby Young, James Delingpole, Rod Liddle etc

the electric catholic bible (soref), Sunday, 11 December 2016 02:24 (seven years ago) link

the worst thing about that picture is too many British-only celebs

(That's the dog)

Madchen, Sunday, 11 December 2016 07:07 (seven years ago) link

The dog was put down shortly after the walk. After disturbed election sleep for most of that week, and this dog being a solid reminder of Kenny the Noble Beast, the whole thing turned me into a bawling wreck that day.

jane burkini (suzy), Sunday, 11 December 2016 08:31 (seven years ago) link

I think half the country, dog owner or not, was in bits. I still can't read about him without welling up.

Madchen, Sunday, 11 December 2016 08:43 (seven years ago) link

i foolhardily read it and wept.

estela, Sunday, 11 December 2016 09:04 (seven years ago) link

I find Hitchens' sour-faced miserabilism having an anvil dropped on my dick every day for the rest of my life a lot more tolerable than smirky "contrarians" like Toby Young, James Delingpole, Rod Liddle etc
