that's the detail that almost pushes into greatness

I can forgive Gill most things for the description he gave of the 2008 Democratic Party National Convention: "so cloyingly sentimental it would give cynicism diabetes."

RIP Trent Reznor

I spoke to AA Gill when I worked in a callcentre. Slightly disappointed to only be able to report that he was civil, patient and friendly, which not a lot of people were.

This is what Peter Hitchens was like when he happened to be in my place of work.

... whereas Lenny Henry was a complete cunt... so I've been told, I haven't had any dealings with him.

satisfying to see boulez carefully aiming before throwing a wad of paper at hilda ogden's head

lmao @ A.A Gill dying of cancer

Houston John (Bananaman Begins), Sunday, 11 December 2016 02:07 (seven years ago) link

As low as that bar is P Hitchens seems far more likeable than most of those dead-eyed fascist nihilists at the Mail. It is a shame his politics suck so much because he is an extraordinarily good polemicist/debater.

calzino, Sunday, 11 December 2016 02:22 (seven years ago) link

I find Hitchens' sour-faced miserabilism a lot more tolerable than smirky "contrarians" like Toby Young, James Delingpole, Rod Liddle etc

(That's the dog)

Madchen, Sunday, 11 December 2016 07:07 (seven years ago) link

The dog was put down shortly after the walk. After disturbed election sleep for most of that week, and this dog being a solid reminder of Kenny the Noble Beast, the whole thing turned me into a bawling wreck that day.

jane burkini (suzy), Sunday, 11 December 2016 08:31 (seven years ago) link

I think half the country, dog owner or not, was in bits. I still can't read about him without welling up.

Madchen, Sunday, 11 December 2016 08:43 (seven years ago) link

i foolhardily read it and wept.

most of Thicke's career looked like hot garbage, but he was head writer on "Fernwood 2 Night", so RIP

i missed this, RIP. i got this album on a whim recently and it's really intense and wonderful.

goole, Wednesday, 14 December 2016 18:25 (seven years ago) link

The majority of Thicke's career probably *was* hot garbage (the half-an-episode of Growing Pains I caught a few years back is proof that some things are best left back in childhood) but I had gotten to really enjoy him in recent years as an affable presence in his guest appearances on things like Bill Maher's TV show and Gilbert Gottfried's podcast.

Also, I loved his response to Kirk Cameron's homophobic ramblings: “I love Kirk but I may have to spank him…’tho not in a gay way!”

Right. Important.

Whoever it was has to do a Dead Pool next year. This year was the first time it got missed, and look what happened..

Seriously. Altman's son made more money for co-writing 'Suicide Is Painless' than Altman himself ever did for M*A*S*H.

Amongst the carnage of the 2016 rolling obituary thread, I think Muhammad Ali has been the only one of my regular dead pool picks to go.
