I may have to walk away from the thread because akm admitted to liking Nocturnal Animals.

I like pretentious films!

My issue withHodden Figures is really more that it portrays probably more progress than really exists. If there still aren't many black women working at NASA, NASA is partly to blame; yet NASA certainly seems to be patting itself on the back on this. I understand artistic liberties but to have the white guy come in and save everyone when this never happened is disappointing. The performances are all very good though.

akm, Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:16 (seven years ago) link

I thought Nocturnal Animals stupider than Hidden Figures.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:17 (seven years ago) link

I left Hidden Figures and felt nothing except satisfaction that a movie with these actresses and this plot would become a box office hit; I turned off Nocturnal Animals devastated by the offal that fashion designers pass off as art.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:18 (seven years ago) link

As I said before, the three things Figures lionizes are women, minorities and science. What more do you want at this point in our history?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Saturday, 4 February 2017 19:25 (seven years ago) link

well said but i still aint seein it

johnny crunch, Saturday, 4 February 2017 21:10 (seven years ago) link

It lionzes a white guy who didn't exist in history in this particular story, which is my only problem with it.

akm, Sunday, 5 February 2017 16:38 (seven years ago) link

Anyway I watched Fences last night and this movie is getting overlooked, holy shit; Denzel and Viola should both win for their categories. I think Moonlight is a better film and should win best picture, but this is my close second favorite of the year (Arrival would be third I guess).

akm, Sunday, 5 February 2017 16:39 (seven years ago) link

America does not need movies, TV is the Thing

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 5 February 2017 16:43 (seven years ago) link

Viola Davis is going to win.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 5 February 2017 17:42 (seven years ago) link

Denzel has a legitimate shot too.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Sunday, 5 February 2017 18:02 (seven years ago) link

ftr Fences was a fine, often stilted adaptation of a good American play and I've got nothing against Davis or Washington-the-actor (the problems are with Washington-the-direction). I wish Jovan Adepo and Stephen Henderson had received the attention that Davis has gotte.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 5 February 2017 18:05 (seven years ago) link

I have no issues with the direction. it is stagey, and the movie doesn't move much beyond "a visual representation of a stage play" but it worked for me.

akm, Sunday, 5 February 2017 18:06 (seven years ago) link

Fucking Academy had the video pulled.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 21:34 (seven years ago) link

what was it

flappy bird, Tuesday, 7 February 2017 21:37 (seven years ago) link

A skit they played at the Academy luncheon of Kate McKinnon playing a starlet from the '30s demonstrating how not to give an acceptance speech. Probably only funny to dedicated Oscar nuts, but anyone in old movie drag shouting "fuck" gets a laugh from me.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 7 February 2017 21:47 (seven years ago) link

I've only seen one of the five performances, so I don't know who they leave out, but Rebecca Hall should have been nominated for Christine.

clemenza, Thursday, 9 February 2017 00:35 (seven years ago) link

And Cynthia Nixon should win for A Quiet Passion, but there's a bunch of complications with that.

Frederik B, Thursday, 9 February 2017 00:51 (seven years ago) link

I've no idea why they would have deleted that Kate McK skit?

Heavy Doors (jed_), Thursday, 9 February 2017 01:26 (seven years ago) link

One complication is that she's not nominated.

Heavy Doors (jed_), Thursday, 9 February 2017 01:26 (seven years ago) link

And another complication that she probably wasn't eligible, as the film will only be released in the US this april. Still. Should have won.

Christ you're a dumbfuck

Saw Lion, I thought it was really good!

akm, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:56 (seven years ago) link

that is, undoubtedly, an amazing story. Rooney Mara didn't need to be there but I understand why they'd put her in otherwise it's a guy playing with google earth for 45 minutes. The child actors in the first half are all excellent. Dev Patel was fine.

After seeing I Am Not Your Negro last night, I suspect Doris Day voted for the OJ documentary.

(IANYN is an essay, really)

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 16 February 2017 17:32 (seven years ago) link

Is it a worthwhile essay, though (would like to see it this weekend)?

Likely? No. Possible? Absolutely. Iffy? Can't say. Doubtful? Maybe. (Old Lunch), Thursday, 16 February 2017 17:43 (seven years ago) link

oh hell yes

Arguably the best doc feature lineup ever, no?

"I do, though, take pleasure in Huppert having won the Golden Globe, because if she hadn't, then I would have had to spend the entirety of this article contemplating the prospect of Stone losing this award to Natalie Portman's performance in Pablo LarraĆn's A Muppet Leaves the White House."

"First there's Taylor Sheridan's screenplay for Hell or High Water, which is jaundiced and perhaps overstated but otherwise resembles the cinematic equivalent to those hand-wringing op-eds in the wake of the 2016 election that shamed the left for not reaching across the aisle."

not even gonna start, Eric.

Is there a current gay thread anymore? I got a breakup go get over.

Eric, there is/was but it has an inclusive title and good luck finding it with Search broken.

You started dating again?!

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 21 February 2017 18:19 (seven years ago) link

I like the idea of the Oscars thread subbing for the gay thread. I seem to recall the last few attempts never getting off the ground.

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 21 February 2017 18:52 (seven years ago) link

I wouldn't call it dating. It was a relationship, and the background/scope of this relationship is so immense that I'm actually crumbling right now. (I have an appointment with my therapist tonight, thankfully; one I'd scheduled before I pulled the plug over the weekend.)

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 February 2017 18:59 (seven years ago) link

hugs, Eric.

It's still really hitting me hard -- a nine-year story line in my life coming to a crashing close ... This is so not the thread for this.
