I fancy buying a cord jacket. A bit sorta "French Sign Painter" rather than particularly smart.

Their stuff is good quality, reasonably priced, and most items in a large size fit me.

My colleagues regularly make reference to me being Man at M&S although only my socks and underwear are from there (and they have not seen the latter).

Kind of feel like I need a new spot. Mostly have been relying on J Crew and Nordstrom. Haven't been happy with Nordstrom lately, feel like their buying has gone downhill. Tried Century 21 a couple times but not much luck.

Goodwill
Last Chance
Value Village
America's Thrift
Lost-N-Found

the latter is my fave, a pretty cool somewhat new place where i have found some really nice vintage shirts/jackets there (as well as records & CDs). plus shopping there is for a good cause:

Lost-N-Found Youth is an Atlanta, Georgia based nonprofit (501c3) that exists to end homelessness for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ+) and all sexual minority youth.

Any recommendations along the lines of Carrier Company or Old Town?

Nothing to suggest, but I am v interested too. I've always had trouble with trousers, but Old Town Plains feel like they've solved it. Cut suits me, great materials, hard wearing.

woof, Saturday, 11 August 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

Aye, a fan of Plains. Have that vague feeling I should wear something else on some days, though!

djh, Saturday, 11 August 2018 21:04 (five years ago) link

I'd like to shop at H&M but I'm just too damn tall. Maybe if I was 5' 10" or something...

never really understood why H&M don't stock long leg jeans, there must be quite a lot of men who can't shop there because of that.

having gone shopping for jeans today, hard to give a shit about High St clothes shops going out of business when they don't stock anything that fits me anyway

Just remembered this - don’t know if you’ve seen it djh:
http://dieworkwear.com/post/160521653624/the-spring-gardener-look
Good news: advising on brands similar to Old Town and Carrier co
Bad news: it’s basically Monty Don - shop the look.

woof, Sunday, 12 August 2018 06:50 (five years ago) link

My bugbear with H&M (sure other stores do it as well) is the way they restock their seasonal wardrobes way too early. Try and buy a T-shirt or some beachwear in August and you won't find one because they've cleared out all that stuff to make way for the winter lines. Try and buy a woolly hat and scarf in February and you can't move for all the T-shirts and beachwear on display.

Yeah I once needed to buy an emergency linen blazer for a wedding in August and was lucky enough that Austin Reed had one on the "80% off - sale ends tomorrow" rack.

X-posts. Thanks Woof. It looked like there might be some good links in there but I haven't managed to buy anything yet! I did recently order a Carrier Company suit (well, trousers and jacket) and the sizing didn't work for me (I've also tried a smock but I looked particularly silly).

The inclusion of Prince Charles in the dieworkwear post is a bit odd.

djh, Monday, 13 August 2018 18:58 (five years ago) link

Old Town are slowly changing their "look". I'm kind of assuming that Plains are a core product that they'll always make.

djh, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 22:00 (five years ago) link

Remarkably haven't managed to buy anything since reading that dieworkwear post though I am hankering after a new pair of Plains, possibly not in Engineer's Navy Stout Twill (which is my usual choice).

djh, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 15:59 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I'm feeling the same and thinking about one of the stout twills. My navy linen plains have served very very well this summer (in fact, right now I'm on a long hot holiday and they've been great again). The grey flannel (I think they call it Yorkshire wool now) my other favourite - nice weight for chilly weather.

woof, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 16:13 (five years ago) link

and haha djh in a late answer to your older questions -
Have a Laboureur bleu de travail and it is a gorgeous colour and good material, but maybe I should have gone 2nd hand - it will take a lot to wear in and look natural.
Got a j Keydge cord slack jacket off ebay a few months back that I like a lot. Too heavy to wear this summer, but looking forward to getting it out for autumn.
if we ever meet, let's check in beforehand so we are not wearing identical outfits.

woof, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 16:27 (five years ago) link

Honestly there’s lots of great clothes for free. Just gotta check the condition to make sure they’re legit. Usually where I get mine - unfortunately otherwise been wearing the same suits and shirts for what seems like 20 years

x-posts. I've got the brown Le Laboureur jacket. I did read that the specific colours have specific roles/meanings in France. I asked a French friend about this and he suggested that people would definitely wear the black one for church but otherwise he wasn't sure. I have a horrible feeling I'm rocking a toilet attendant-look.

djh, Tuesday, 21 August 2018 20:19 (five years ago) link

Lots of UK shops stock Le Laboureur and Vetra jackets ... I'm wondering why their other products (particularly trousers) aren't widely stocked? Too *work wear*?

djh, Thursday, 23 August 2018 20:35 (five years ago) link

For anyone who cares, here stocks Le Laboureur trousers (in black only). Really odd cut. Wide and then tapered abruptly in. I couldn't work out the functional (work-wear) explanation for the cut.

They regularly(ish) pop up in Spitalfields. Probably worth sending them an email. Labour & Wait have some limited stock, I think?? You can also return stuff if you order it in a standard size (ie. without alteration).

I feel like it’s really hard lately to find decently made, reasonably stylish clothing that looks right for an almost 40-yr-old but isn’t in that $200 heritage craft shirt category.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Tuesday, 2 October 2018 13:41 (five years ago) link

I bought a Laboureur jacket from this garden centre for £59 a few months ago, although they seem to have put the price up a bit now: https://www.greatdixtershop.co.uk/PBSCProduct.asp?ItmID=18433439

I used to like stopping into Old Navy for basic stuff because it was dirt cheap, but they're expensive now (well, relatively). Bad move imo, the quality is absolute crap and people know it. F'in hoodie $35 and it feels like garbage. Better hoodies at H&M for $25

I forget that people on here like Old Town.

Anyway, has anyone bought a [French work wear brand] Vetra jacket? I've got a vague idea I've tried one before and they were tiny sizes but the website I am looking at says "true to size". Any ideas?

djh, Thursday, 11 February 2021 18:44 (three years ago) link

ohh I think I had something similar with Vetra a while back - there was a linen jacket I tried on that was too small; then when I hunted online it seemed like lots of their stuff didn't seem to exist above about a French 50 (ie UK 40).
But then I look here and I can see XLs with chest measurements to match.
