That's absolutely a Midwest WASP thing. Midwestern WASPs are just suuuuuuuper good at pretending to be stoic paragons of mental health.

Who speak in tutting side whispers about their nephew who has 'the depression' while secretly popping Xanax to keep from openly weeping at the dinner table.

DL's self-confessional moment was in the wake of the office-affair thing, he basically said all that at his desk

Can't speak to WASPs, but as the grandson of a Minnesotan farmer, we just don't see the value of complaining. Winter is harsh, Ole's hand got caught in the thresher, there's nothing to be done about it.

Surprised myself and watched the whole thing this morning. Cringed often, which I know is part of the point with Norm Macdonald (used to be a big fan--not sure about this). Dave's best line: "I had given my word--the same reason I'm here."

clemenza, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 15:30 (six years ago) link

Norm's face looking a bit different these days

frogbs, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link

this was pretty good. but why on earth are the close ups so close? its as if the camera operator was told to never include either the chin or top of the head in a shot.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 23:33 (six years ago) link

Yeah that was jarring. I've mostly heard the show in podcast form but I don't remember seeing close ups like that when on video versions of older ones I've seen.

This was great though, wish it was longer.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Thursday, 27 July 2017 07:16 (six years ago) link

Norm's face now conveniently larger for punchability

(nice that he's bringing his homophobia to the grave)

lettermans voice is really soothing & his laugh is great

johnny crunch, Thursday, 27 July 2017 13:08 (six years ago) link

almost wonder if the extreme close-ups were just Norm's way of trolling Dave

either way there's not much reason to actually watch it

I enjoyed it a lot though. never liked Dave much in the past but I definitely liked him here

A little over two years after David Letterman commenced his retirement, the talk-show host has announced his return to the small screen for a limited Netflix series. Premiering in 2018, the as-yet-untitled program, which will come out as six, hour-long installments, will find the host interviewing one guest each episode, as well as comedy and "curiosity" bits outside of the studio.

I'm wondering if that's partly a reaction to his desire to do some live engagements and then realizing how much tickets would go for and not wanting to charge people that much

mh, Tuesday, 8 August 2017 18:07 (six years ago) link

he's interviewing Regis six times

It was kind of interesting to hear on the Stern interview that Letterman had foreknowledge of the classic Andy Kaufman bits on Late Night, as well as the stupid Joaquin Phoenix appearance

Haha. In the first two minutes, Rodney (A.) goes into a monologue from center stage, (B.) makes fun of Paul and Canada, and (C.) begins reading his own Top 10 list.

"Netflix has taken the wraps off David Letterman’s new six-episode talk show series. It is titled My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman and the debut of the one-hour talk show will stream January 12 with President Barack Obama as the first guest. A new episode will run out monthly during 2018.

The first season’s guest list is a doozy: Aside from Obama, it features George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai, Jay-Z, Tina Fey, Howard Stern. The January 12 interview will be Obama’s first talk-show appearance since leaving office.

The show will feature Letterman and one guest in interviews that take place both inside and outside a studio setting. It will also include field segments featuring Letterman, whose Late Show run ended in 2015."
