Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Seriously, that's the next thread. All in favor?

Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:04 (sixteen years ago) link

i just sold my jaguar for $400. I should have asked more, the guy totally would have paid.

i'm beyond sad right now.

chicago kevin, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

:(

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:06 (sixteen years ago) link

On the other hand, you're $400 richer. :(

Laurel, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

That sounds complicated.
I'm opening an ING account tomorrow, BOIS.

KitCat, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:08 (sixteen years ago) link

It's really not complicated at all. It took less than 10 minutes to open up.

I am having them take out $75 on the 18th of the month. That's all there is to it. On Octover 1, 2008 I make a decision--leave tonight or live and die this way.

Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:10 (sixteen years ago) link

On the other hand, you're $400 richer. :(

rent is due and will take this all away.

chicago kevin, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:12 (sixteen years ago) link

OK...so I pre-ordered the download from Radiohead, but I don't see a confirmation email.

Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I got a confirmation e-mail.

No luck with jobs, Kevin?

Jordan, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:21 (sixteen years ago) link

i think i might be cursed.

chicago kevin, Monday, 1 October 2007 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Jesse, set up a filter in Gmail that automatically archives your freecycle emails under a label called "Freecycle."

Jenny, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:05 (sixteen years ago) link

wow, this is a job that i applied for last week that closed SIX MINUTES AGO:

If you do not hear from us within 30 days, we will keep a copy of your information for one year and may consider you for future opportunites if they arise.

i'm almost at the point where i prefer getting told to fuck right off as opposed to not hearing and not knowing.

i applied for a job

river wolf, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:14 (sixteen years ago) link

i should try that, although it sounds like they might be looking for someone w/ more editorial experience than i have ... none of that sounds like shit i couldn't do, tho.

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm glad he finally got serious about music now that he's 37.
yeah, i mean i know this dude is a great sideman and he's well-connected and all, and i'm sure he's good at what he does, but is "Random 37-year old White Dude Makes His Life Playing Music" a cover story??!?!?!?!

i dunno. whatever. i don't really care that much but i'm glad it brought "gavin" out of the woodwork.

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:18 (sixteen years ago) link

i wonder what drano lady is doing now. follow up cover story?!

La Lechera, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

i applied for a job at u of c. what's everyone's take on applying for multiple jobs at one site? i've always been of the mind that applying for more than one job shows a lack of focus but at the same time i'm fucking desperate over here.

also, the UIC hr sight is the clusterfuck to end all clusterfucks.

chicago kevin, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

I like articles about random people you see around town, but I haven't seen this week's Reader.

KitCat, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:25 (sixteen years ago) link

My favorite bits in the college paper were called That Guy/That Girl.

KitCat, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:26 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost to Kevin
My guess would be that as long as the jobs are in different departments, nobody is going to notice. I imagine each department only looks at its own applicants, and they don't compare notes.

kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:27 (sixteen years ago) link

What have you got to lose? Apply to as many as you want.

KitCat, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Kenan is pretty much correct as far as I know.

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:28 (sixteen years ago) link

Srsly. Apply to everything. If focus and tailored cover letters and selecting jobs based on fit and interest doesn't work, just apply to every fucking thing you can. SHOTGUN JOB HUNTING.

Jenny, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:29 (sixteen years ago) link

thanks jenny, that's what i have been doing. i'd been told by someone who works in hr that it's poor form but what the fuck? I just took the dogs out to the back yard for 15 minutes, the little one LOVES it but the older one i think associates the back yard with the mutt who lives upstairs. everytime there was any kind of a noise he'd freeze and look startledly (is that a word?) at the door. the puppy ran all over the place but usually trailed after his big brother.

chicago kevin, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:45 (sixteen years ago) link

Ready Fire Aim, bro.

Eazy, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:52 (sixteen years ago) link

U of C likes to hire from the inside... don't get your hopes up unless you went there. They are not above soul-crushing rejection letters casually mentioning they selected a candidate with "more suitable educational background" -- i.e. already paid them thousands of dollars.

It's aight though, new job starting tomorrow!

Gavin, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:53 (sixteen years ago) link

GODDAMIT I'M NOT A FUCKING LAWYER, STOP CALLING ME AND ASKING ME FOR DETAILED LEGAL ADVICE WHEN I HAVE TOLD YOU THAT YOU HAVE TO TALK TO A LAWYER AND YES SHE WILL BILL YOU, AND NO YOU CAN'T GET ADVICE OUT OF ME FOR FREE!

Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh. I mean, sure, I'll be happy to pass on that message! Have a *great* day!

Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 21:57 (sixteen years ago) link

xxp I didn't go to UofC and I work here. The same goes for almost everyone in my department.

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link

(just sayin)

dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:00 (sixteen years ago) link

When I used to answer the phones for the lawyer in NC I would say something like, "You don't want me to give you any legal advice! Not only is it against the law, but it would totally mess up your case!" Just basically playing as dumb as they cumb.

Jenny, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Lucky you! I was applying at journals though, someone who worked there was all like "Uh, don't get yr hopes up"

Gavin, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Lucky you!

Boy, doesn't everyone love it when someone appears out of nowhere, in a place where we all clearly know each other, and starts laying on the snark? Is there anything more charming?

kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:06 (sixteen years ago) link

That wasn't snark, but have at it if ye must.

Gavin, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link

I could see reading that as snark (I didn't; I actually read it in a funny high-pitched voice with a British accent, but... yeah, probably a little 5 pm giddiness there), but let's give our new friend the benefit of the doubt.

Jenny, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I applied at a journal :-/
