The New York Times 25 Best Movies of the Century

i hated the last 20 minutes of Blood with the fire of a thousand suns. It would not have taken me that long to off that sniveler.

A movie can get away with a lot of problems in the middle if you've got a great opening and a great ending.

Looking at the list again I'm mostly just grateful they didn't shoehorn some superhero garbage in.

I like most of the ones I've seen but I don't think I'd put anything but the top two on a list of my favorite films of the century.

anyhoo the way this intro is written makes it 100% unclear if Times readers on FB chose part of the list.

There's only one movie on here that if someone told me they hadn't seen it I'd tell them "You really gotta see it", and that's "Spirited Away". There's about 10 others I consider pretty good, and one I didn't like much at all ("I'm Not There"). The rest I haven't seen. Lots of good choices on the 6 directors' lists in the linked article. The list definitely should have had more comedy on it.

If you haven't seen the rest, how do you know you wouldn't have laughed?

Spirited Away. Is bad and pointless and boring. I think Boyhood is the film I like most of these. I left the cinem halfway through Yiyi, I know that's terrible but I didn't care about it. I care a lot more about Museum Hours and Children of Men than I do with anything here.

(xp to Alfred) That Mr Lazarescu one looks like it might have been funny in a weird way, but unless those Clint Eastwood and Claire Denis films are very uncharacteristic, I doubt they are very amusing. I would have liked to see a lot more obvious comedy though - stuff like "Borat", "The Hangover", "Grand Budapest Hotel", "Napoleon Dynamite", "The Trip", "Shaun of the Dead" - as well as comedy-dramas like "The Squid and the Whale", "Happy Go Lucky", "Happy Christmas", "Rachel Getting Married", "Please Give", etc.. - any of which I would put on a list like this.

It's stupid that Mulholland Drive isn't on the List though.

For non-comedies I think should be here: "The Wrestler", "Grizzly Man", and "Tree of Life" come to mind.

35 shots of rum / 35 Rhums is so much better than The White 'Material though #Claire Denis Stan.

I (uncharacteristically, for me) saw Inside Out in the theater. I thought it was pretty good, but the idea that it was the 7th best film of the century so far did not occur to me.

I've seen 19 of these and maybe 3 would be on my own list. 40 Year-Old-Virgin is such a failed stab at populism. I guess they are trying to signal that they value comedy but that film's stature, such as it was, is rapidly shrinking for comedy nerds and general audiences alike.

I pick Mulholland Drive

i'm sure Apichatpong Weerasethakul is properly chastened that his entire output in the last 16 years can't stand up to Apatow and George Miller.
