I (uncharacteristically, for me) saw Inside Out in the theater. I thought it was pretty good, but the idea that it was the 7th best film of the century so far did not occur to me.

I've seen 19 of these and maybe 3 would be on my own list. 40 Year-Old-Virgin is such a failed stab at populism. I guess they are trying to signal that they value comedy but that film's stature, such as it was, is rapidly shrinking for comedy nerds and general audiences alike.

I pick Mulholland Drive
― Treeship, Monday, 12 June 2017 03:57 (seven years ago) link
josie and the pussycats def belongs on this list

"Bad Santa" should have been the token comedy pick

Without Werckmeister Harmonies the whole thing is a sham.
― Frederik B, Monday, 12 June 2017 13:04 (seven years ago) link
Step Brothers would have been the braver (and better) comedy choice
― Number None, Monday, 12 June 2017 14:11 (seven years ago) link
Why not Bridesmaids in place of 40-y-o-V is the real question?
And yes, I too forgot about Shattered Glass and boy was that good

i'm sure Apichatpong Weerasethakul is properly chastened that his entire output in the last 16 years can't stand up to Apatow and George Miller.

The dumbest movies suggested for this list itt:
ZootopiaMarvel moviesThe HangoverThe WrestlerZoolanderThe Lives Of OthersShattered Glass
Movie I honestly wish had been on this list:
Josie and the Pussycats

I like Shattered Glass but yeah it's absolutely not listworthy. And I agree with the chorus re: Inside Out. Up would be infinitely preferable as the Pixar entry. White Material is kinda a wtf pick as well
― a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 14:58 (seven years ago) link
yeah, as smart people have been pointing out for years, The Lives Of Others is sentimental garbage.
Magic Mike 2 is better than at least 10 of the films listed.
agree that 35 Rhums should be the Denis choice.

I just kinda pulled Shattered Glass out of my ass (ouch!). But it is one of my personal favorites from this century. I'll swap it out with Être et avoir.

Trouble Every Day (2001)Vendredi soir (2002)L'intrus (2004)35 rhums (2008)White Material (2009)Bastards (2013)
I hated L'intrus, but that's quite a run.

Nymphomaniac should be taking up the sex comedy slot

35 Rhums is the better film, but WM has Nicolas Duvauchelle.

I didn't hate L'intrus so much as was utterly baffled by it. Still haven't seen the vampire movie, gory-as-fuck not v appealing to me.
I'm hoping to direct Magic Mike: Magnum.

If there is one great American comedy of the century besides Eternal Sunshine it might be Fantastic Mr. Fox.
― Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:11 (seven years ago) link
I'll add Frances Ha and Damsels in Distress.

Not saying they deserved to be on the list, just saying they're great American comedies.

for a romanian movie about the health care system i'd have gone with 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days.

hmmm, "great" has to be at least in Preston Sturges' ballpark for me

― insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:24 (seven years ago) link
i like I Love You, Phillip Morris and Inherent Vice plenty, but can't put "great" in front of them.
I couldn't bring myself to watch a Jack Black-Gwyneth Paltrow vehicle. I'm sure it makes Lubitsch look like a piker.
