Still Life>>>Touch of Sin

Bernie Lugg (Ward Fowler), Monday, 12 June 2017 10:28 (seven years ago) link

^^ agree

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 10:29 (seven years ago) link

"Bad Santa" should have been the token comedy pick

Well bissogled trotters (Michael B), Monday, 12 June 2017 11:02 (seven years ago) link

40 Year-Old-Virgin is such a failed stab at populism

i would have gone w Superbad

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 12 June 2017 11:12 (seven years ago) link

Spirited Away

Shat Parp (dog latin), Monday, 12 June 2017 11:19 (seven years ago) link

no Children of Men, no credibility

Shat Parp (dog latin), Monday, 12 June 2017 11:19 (seven years ago) link

maybe for best videogame

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 11:25 (seven years ago) link

Without Werckmeister Harmonies the whole thing is a sham.

Frederik B, Monday, 12 June 2017 13:04 (seven years ago) link

Step Brothers would have been the braver (and better) comedy choice

Number None, Monday, 12 June 2017 14:11 (seven years ago) link

Why not Bridesmaids in place of 40-y-o-V is the real question?

And yes, I too forgot about Shattered Glass and boy was that good

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 12 June 2017 14:14 (seven years ago) link

except the title

Guayaquil (eephus!), Monday, 12 June 2017 14:15 (seven years ago) link

i'm sure Apichatpong Weerasethakul is properly chastened that his entire output in the last 16 years can't stand up to Apatow and George Miller.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 14:53 (seven years ago) link

Better luck next time!

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Monday, 12 June 2017 14:54 (seven years ago) link

The dumbest movies suggested for this list itt:

Zootopia
Marvel movies
The Hangover
The Wrestler
Zoolander
The Lives Of Others
Shattered Glass

Movie I honestly wish had been on this list:

Josie and the Pussycats

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 14:54 (seven years ago) link

I like Shattered Glass but yeah it's absolutely not listworthy. And I agree with the chorus re: Inside Out. Up would be infinitely preferable as the Pixar entry. White Material is kinda a wtf pick as well

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 14:58 (seven years ago) link

yeah, as smart people have been pointing out for years, The Lives Of Others is sentimental garbage.

Magic Mike 2 is better than at least 10 of the films listed.

agree that 35 Rhums should be the Denis choice.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:00 (seven years ago) link

I just kinda pulled Shattered Glass out of my ass (ouch!). But it is one of my personal favorites from this century. I'll swap it out with Être et avoir.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:03 (seven years ago) link

xxp it's XXL, actually, and yes ... maybe closer to 15

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:03 (seven years ago) link

Trouble Every Day (2001)
Vendredi soir (2002)
L'intrus (2004)
35 rhums (2008)
White Material (2009)
Bastards (2013)

I hated L'intrus, but that's quite a run.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:05 (seven years ago) link

Nymphomaniac should be taking up the sex comedy slot

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:08 (seven years ago) link

35 Rhums is the better film, but WM has Nicolas Duvauchelle.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:08 (seven years ago) link

Nymphomaniac should be taking up the sex comedy slot

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:08 (seven years ago) link

I didn't hate L'intrus so much as was utterly baffled by it. Still haven't seen the vampire movie, gory-as-fuck not v appealing to me.

I'm hoping to direct Magic Mike: Magnum.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:09 (seven years ago) link

starring Tom Selleck as the crusty but benign strip club owner

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:10 (seven years ago) link

Mr. Lazarescu is a didactic bore iirc

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:10 (seven years ago) link

If there is one great American comedy of the century besides Eternal Sunshine it might be Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:11 (seven years ago) link

I'll add Frances Ha and Damsels in Distress.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:13 (seven years ago) link

yeah DiD is a riot

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:13 (seven years ago) link

Ghost World
Wet Hot American Summer
Shallow Hal
the Jackass trilogy
A Serious Man
Fantastic Mr. Fox
I Love You, Phillip Morris
Inherent Vice

Not saying they deserved to be on the list, just saying they're great American comedies.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:20 (seven years ago) link

for a romanian movie about the health care system i'd have gone with 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days.

nomar, Monday, 12 June 2017 15:22 (seven years ago) link

hmmm, "great" has to be at least in Preston Sturges' ballpark for me

xp

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:23 (seven years ago) link

xp Lazarescu has more laughs tbh.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:23 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, yeah, comedy is dying out with the silent generation, et al.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:24 (seven years ago) link

i like I Love You, Phillip Morris and Inherent Vice plenty, but can't put "great" in front of them.

I couldn't bring myself to watch a Jack Black-Gwyneth Paltrow vehicle. I'm sure it makes Lubitsch look like a piker.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:28 (seven years ago) link

MacGruber

Chris L, Monday, 12 June 2017 15:29 (seven years ago) link

Yes.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:31 (seven years ago) link

No

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:38 (seven years ago) link

cinema, boys, not SNL movies

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:42 (seven years ago) link

You're gonna have to break that one down for me, doc.

what a card

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:57 (seven years ago) link

predictably i think these lists suffer from a lack of verhoeven, mostly black book

ToddBonzalez (BradNelson), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:59 (seven years ago) link

tom

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 16:04 (seven years ago) link

lol brad I almost mentioned that but I felt it would be too aggressively on-brand

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 16:07 (seven years ago) link

"Too on-brand" would've been Soto sayaing "list suffers from lack of Bryan Ferry hair"

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 16:10 (seven years ago) link

I agree with more of those than the Times list, but I'd swap in Haywire for Che.

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 12 June 2017 16:50 (seven years ago) link

Haywire for Che was amazing, it's true.
