Ghost World
Wet Hot American Summer
Shallow Hal
the Jackass trilogy
A Serious Man
Fantastic Mr. Fox
I Love You, Phillip Morris
Inherent Vice

Not saying they deserved to be on the list, just saying they're great American comedies.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:20 (seven years ago) link

for a romanian movie about the health care system i'd have gone with 4 Months, 3 Weeks & 2 Days.

nomar, Monday, 12 June 2017 15:22 (seven years ago) link

hmmm, "great" has to be at least in Preston Sturges' ballpark for me

xp

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:23 (seven years ago) link

xp Lazarescu has more laughs tbh.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:23 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, yeah, comedy is dying out with the silent generation, et al.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:24 (seven years ago) link

i like I Love You, Phillip Morris and Inherent Vice plenty, but can't put "great" in front of them.

I couldn't bring myself to watch a Jack Black-Gwyneth Paltrow vehicle. I'm sure it makes Lubitsch look like a piker.

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:28 (seven years ago) link

You're gonna have to break that one down for me, doc.

what a card

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 15:57 (seven years ago) link

predictably i think these lists suffer from a lack of verhoeven, mostly black book

tom

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 16:04 (seven years ago) link

lol brad I almost mentioned that but I felt it would be too aggressively on-brand

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 16:07 (seven years ago) link

"Too on-brand" would've been Soto sayaing "list suffers from lack of Bryan Ferry hair"

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2017 16:10 (seven years ago) link

I agree with more of those than the Times list, but I'd swap in Haywire for Che.

grawlix (unperson), Monday, 12 June 2017 16:50 (seven years ago) link

Haywire for Che was amazing, it's true.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Monday, 12 June 2017 16:53 (seven years ago) link

The dumbest movies suggested for this list itt:

Zootopia
Marvel movies
The Hangover
The Wrestler
Zoolander

Its not a bad list as these things go and enjoying the clueless comments from fucking anime fans.

These are all great.

4. A Touch of Sin
5. The Death of Mr. Lazarescu
6. Yi Yi
9. Summer Hours
12. Timbuktu
17. Three Times
18. The Gleaners and I
22. I'm Not There

Went for Yi Yi. This century has peaked early.

fucking anime fans

Is that what Glenn K is going on about in that tweet? A mindset in which Spirited Away isn't thought of as at or near the top of its particular form is too insular for me.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Monday, 12 June 2017 17:28 (seven years ago) link

spirited away owns, though it's not the best miyazaki. still voted Mad Max.

Anime has a terrible history. I wouldn't big up if I was you.

yes to this

johnny crunch, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 18:58 (seven years ago) link

War of the Worlds is an insane choice. I'll grant that the first half is among the best work that Spielberg has ever done (challops!) but the second half pretty much completely undoes that.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 18:58 (seven years ago) link

Either way, I really should finally watch War of the Worlds, huh?

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 18:59 (seven years ago) link

how did Mulholland Dr not work on you, E?

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:01 (seven years ago) link

oh my god, yes. War of the Worlds is amazing. it's Spielberg's best movie. the first hour is just incredible, i saw it twice when it came out and i started crying when Dakota Fanning was freaking out and screaming "is it the terrorists???" 9/11 was less than 4 years prior - captured that apocalyptic feeling without addressing the event itself (i can't watch any 9/11 fiction, it makes me too sad and angry. i'm avoiding reading about that awful 9/11 musical that won a bunch of Tony's the other day).

flappy bird, Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:02 (seven years ago) link

xp oh it's one-per-director

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:03 (seven years ago) link

What Eastwood is to AO Scott, evidently Spielberg is to me

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:03 (seven years ago) link

I'll admit, I now really want to go home and watch WotW and shut it off the moment before Tim Robbins appears onscreen. Such a magnificent short film.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:07 (seven years ago) link

wow "nobody cares" has a surprisingly large reach

more like matthew badlose (wins), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:08 (seven years ago) link

War of the Worlds is an insane choice

a strange declaration when he picked Dogville and Irreversible

nothing wrong w/ Tim Robbins scene

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:17 (seven years ago) link

TBF, I almost immediately backpedaled on the declaration of insanity.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:22 (seven years ago) link

The Heart of the World (Guy Maddin, 2000)

if mixing shorts and features, i'd pick this and Saddest Music in the World

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:38 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, I will never not include shorts. My favorite movie ever is a short. They're eligible by my estimation.
