What Eastwood is to AO Scott, evidently Spielberg is to me

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:03 (six years ago) link

I'll admit, I now really want to go home and watch WotW and shut it off the moment before Tim Robbins appears onscreen. Such a magnificent short film.

War of the Worlds is an insane choice

a strange declaration when he picked Dogville and Irreversible

nothing wrong w/ Tim Robbins scene

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:17 (six years ago) link

TBF, I almost immediately backpedaled on the declaration of insanity.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:22 (six years ago) link

The Heart of the World (Guy Maddin, 2000)

if mixing shorts and features, i'd pick this and Saddest Music in the World

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 13 June 2017 19:38 (six years ago) link

Yeah, I will never not include shorts. My favorite movie ever is a short. They're eligible by my estimation.

good list

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 02:32 (six years ago) link

I'll finish my chiseled list tomorrow. Here's a list I made for movies between 2010 and 2016.

most baffled by the clearing, flappy

I haven't seen it since it came out and that final scene where William H. Macy gets found out at the grocery store with a counterfeit $100 bill has stayed in my mind ever since. I remember it had a really unusual and unsettling atmosphere and something about that final scene has haunted me. So I just looked up the movie and apparently I conflated William H. Macy's character in Fargo with Willem Dafoe, who's actually in The Clearing. whoops.

I did my list sorta off the top of my head, although top 10 is solid. I'm sure I'll remember something I forgot tomorrow.

flappy bird, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 02:44 (six years ago) link

BradNelson's list is basically perfect.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 03:11 (six years ago) link

Gaspar No-way

AND Best in Show

flappy bird, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 03:37 (six years ago) link

Any love for '00s Almodovar? "Bad Education" likely my #1.

geoffreyess, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 05:12 (six years ago) link

I love Bad Education! Should have been on my list for sure.

Cherish, Wednesday, 14 June 2017 12:31 (six years ago) link

Volver would be my pick for his best 21st century film but it won't be on my list.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 12:36 (six years ago) link

Pavlovian listicle-making, tsk tsk

Supercreditor (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:11 (six years ago) link

Would love to see Pavlov's list tbh

May o God help us (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:12 (six years ago) link

I don't have the wherewithal to go whole hog, but my revolving top four are this century's two Lynch joints, The Tree of Life, and Être et avoir. At least one of Altman's latter-day efforts would make it into my top 25.

Do I still get a treat?

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:14 (six years ago) link

The treat is Morbs coming to your place to recite baseball stats.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:16 (six years ago) link

Bad Education and Talk To Her both. Almodovar and Haynes have a similar career trajectory from my standpoint, tho Haynes has yet to make an I'm So Excited.

xp treat or trick?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:17 (six years ago) link

No Bruno Dumont, no treats.

Bernie Lugg (Ward Fowler), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:17 (six years ago) link

At least one of Altman's latter-day efforts would make it into my top 25.

The Company was one of my last-minute cuts.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:17 (six years ago) link

Gorgeous, wonderful movie, so astoundingly underrated.

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:25 (six years ago) link

Really, everything he did following my dn's namesake was top notch (although I might need to see Tanner on Tanner again to be sure).

The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T & the Women (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:29 (six years ago) link

Here's my list. No room for an Altman, unfortunately, although The Company would be my 21st century pick.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 13:54 (six years ago) link

How many lists have you done in the last month, Alfred?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:10 (six years ago) link

Certified Copy aside, 2010 was maybe the worst year for movies in my natural life.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Wednesday, 14 June 2017 14:11 (six years ago) link

I usually write a list a day with my morning smoothie.

2002 wasn't awesome either, I noticed.
