epic sandwiches (turkey and roastbeef too) and two salads for $5.50 out the door.
― chaki, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 23:18 (sixteen years ago) link
Have any of you ever been to May's on 14th at Market for sandwiches?
― Michael White, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 23:19 (sixteen years ago) link
Nope. I can't even picture where that is and I'm at that intersection all the time.

Sorry, M & L Market.
― Michael White, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 23:32 (sixteen years ago) link
I'll have to try that. It sounds good.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 23:36 (sixteen years ago) link
Actually it sounds kind of like Quincy's.
― Alex in SF, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link
hmm that looks vaguely familiar - I think I was there once years and years ago
― Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 23:37 (sixteen years ago) link
Except people at Quincy's are friendly.
They're not really unfriendly.

This thread is so great. I'm heading to San Francisco in May for a couple of days and it's given me so many good ideas.
I was wondering if anyone had any advice on interesting stuff/places to photograph (I'm a keen amateur) that aren't necessarily on the beaten tourist trail. Hell even advice on good spots to get pictures of the standard tourist sights would be more than welcome.

Over near the Cliff House are the ruins of the old Sutro Baths, which are quite a sight.
Baker Beach has some good low views of the GG Bridge, especially if you are willing to walk a ways. Also, the Legion of Honor museum has some nice trails and spots for pictures of the mouth of the bay.
― schwantz, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:53 (sixteen years ago) link
The coastal trail between Baker Beach and the bridge in late afternoon was great. The light wasn't quite what I hoped it would be on the bridge, but it may have been the wrong hour or season. Best of all was the top of the stadium at Berkeley at sunset.

There are probably a bunch, but I only know/like the most famous one Greens. Otherwise I recommend veggie food at regular restaurants.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 18:55 (sixteen years ago) link
I DO NOT recommend Herbivore, which I find mediocre with horrid service. Supposedly Cafe Gratitude is okay if you can get over the terrible food names and hippy-dippy-ness.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 18:56 (sixteen years ago) link
yeah Greens is the most high profile one I can think of - there are plenty of veggie options in most restaurants and a fair amount cater to vegans too (I mean shit the local diner around the corner from my house has vegan breakfast scrambles and vegan sandwiches etc)
Herbivore is more like fucking Horriblebore
― Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 18:57 (sixteen years ago) link
Dosa next door is fantastic and has great veggie south Indian fare

where are you recording..? (just curious)
― Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link
Just about every restaurant on Valencia has better veggie far than Herbivore.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 19:03 (sixteen years ago) link
Millenium is the other well-known one, and may be vegan (?). Greens isn't cheap, but I thought it was very pleasant, both food and otherwise. I can't imagine you'd have trouble finding good veggie options at restaurants not explicitly veggie.
― gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 February 2008 19:10 (sixteen years ago) link
dude go get veggie cheese steaks at Jay's they are yum. also hit me up if ya wana get yo drink and smoke on.

this thread is actually pretty useful if you decide to actually scroll up and read it:
vegetarian: there are some famous/pricy veg/vegan restaurants (most notably millenium and greens), but here are some other more reasonable ones: golden ear (o'farrell btw. jones/leavenworth) herbivore - a small chain: divisadero/fell & valencia/21 legume - 24th/noeanother suprise to look out for: the tamale lady, a woman (just turned 50 last week) who travels from bar to bar in the mission (sometimes lower haight) has a rolling cart full of fresh tamales (and hot sauce) which is always a treat.IMPORTANT REMINDER: don't think because you're going to california in the middle of august that you will be greeted with blue skies and a warm sunrays washing over you. san francisco is notoriously gray and foggy and cold and windy in the summer months. (i spent the fourth about 100 miles inland and it was in the 90s. when i drove back into SF it was 57 mid-day). bring layers. the east bay (berkeley/oakland) is about 10-20 degrees warmer on average. even the east side of SF can be 10 degrees warmer than the west side. again: BRING LAYERS.-- gygax! are the tamale lady's tamales made with lard, steve?

also, how much should I value Michael Bauer's opinion? Patricia Unterman's?

1) lard.
2) those guys are okay, they're both somewhat stuffy 50 somethings with somewhat conservative tastes. i prefer chef's opinions to pro reviews.
