does everyone turn into a fucking gibbering moron when 'satirising' trump seriously

imago, Saturday, 8 July 2017 23:17 (six years ago) link

sorry that's a little bit strong but come on folks

imago, Saturday, 8 July 2017 23:18 (six years ago) link

when trying to satirize someone, one must strive to achieve a certain resemblance to one's subject, or risk one's audience not recognizing who you are making fun of. hence, one must, in satirizing Trump, perforce sound like a gibbering moron to some extent.

believe it or not, making the IC angry isn't really a policy justification

if nobody else is going to give you credit for using perforce correctly in a sentence, well, I suppose I must.

I love being ruled by 86 year olds

global tetrahedron, Sunday, 9 July 2017 12:39 (six years ago) link

So tweets like that ... is there a serious contingent of old cranky GOPers like Grassley and, I don't know, McCain, who are just so clearly discomfited by what's going on yet feel totally compelled to go along with it anyway? Like, if its a bad idea, why wait until it fails to complain? Or for that matter, why complain but just do it anyway? They're just complete cowards, right, but you'd think decades of experience would have taught them how to better navigate through this shit, unless this situation was truly never imagined. When they bump into true believers, old coots like Corwyn and young assholes like Gowdy alike, can they just not believe their ears, or at they (like apparently Hatch) just totally not listening? A shithead like McConnell, has he been rubbing his hands with glee since election day, or secretly panicking that his grand plan will be undone by dicks like Cruz and morons like Trump? It's a shame we'll likely never get an honest accounting from these dummies when the dust has settled in a couple of decades.

Sanctions were not discussed at my meeting with President Putin. Nothing will be done until the Ukrainian & Syrian problems are solved!

i believe this, actually

Karl Malone, Sunday, 9 July 2017 18:02 (six years ago) link

Bob Dole worked in a different era, so he was not always that bad, but he always had the potential to be that bad, if circumstances had allowed it.

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 9 July 2017 18:31 (six years ago) link

(Ron Howard narrator voice) the circumstances allowed it.

i think there's an interesting argument that hw bush and/or dole winning against clinton probably would have been better for keeping the GOP a more moderate party and the democrats mightve started saying "we cant win being the gop-lite like clinton!" but it's such a depressing thought

The argument is stronger with Poppy Bush winning reelection (and it delays Dems losing House and Senate).

Treeship, Sunday, 9 July 2017 20:52 (six years ago) link

dude don't do that to people

President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., was promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton before agreeing to meet with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign, according to three advisers to the White House briefed on the meeting and two others with knowledge of it.

The meeting was also attended by his campaign chairman at the time, Paul J. Manafort, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner. Mr. Manafort and Mr. Kushner only recently disclosed the meeting, though not its content, in confidential government documents described to The New York Times.

The Times reported the existence of the meeting on Saturday. But in subsequent interviews, the advisers and others revealed the motivation behind it.

The meeting — at Trump Tower on June 9, 2016, two weeks after Donald J. Trump clinched the Republican nomination — points to the central question in federal investigations of the Kremlin’s meddling in the presidential election: whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russians. The accounts of the meeting represent the first public indication that at least some in the campaign were willing to accept Russian help.

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Sunday, 9 July 2017 21:00 (six years ago) link

Seeing it described like that, and that Donald Jr was allowed to be involved, makes me think they probably weren't capable of actually colluding. But sure seems as if they tried to. And a fun question is why Manafort and Kushner all of a sudden disclosed the meeting. Sure seems like something else is about to drop.

Karl Malone, Sunday, 9 July 2017 21:08 (six years ago) link

Kushner could quite honestly be out over this. This is fucking stupid, and he is the only one of the three still involved in the administration.

Frederik B, Sunday, 9 July 2017 21:09 (six years ago) link

but if kushner is out, who will take the lead on

peace in the middle east
opiod crisis
running government like a business
criminal justice reform
dipomacy with china and mexico
reforming VA healthcare
