One thing someone brought up -- is this legally different from Hillary paying Steele, a British citizen, from doing opposition research on Trump?

It was GOP peeps who paid Steele, iirc. At the behest of Jeb! ?

They keep dreaming.

Now would be a great time for Trump WH to hit the road and make some speeches to push #repealobamacare to change the subject.

This seems like a poor choice:

https://www.axios.com/what-we-know-about-the-senate-health-care-bill-2457420090.html

The Medicaid portions of the revised bill likely will stay largely the same as the first version — including the growth rate for new per-person funding caps and the process for phasing out the Affordable Care Act's Medicaid expansion.

This is a loss for several moderates, including Sens. Dean Heller, Rob Portman, Shelley Moore Captio, Lisa Murkowski, Dan Sullivan, John Hoeven and Susan Collins. It's a win for conservatives, particularly Sen. Pat Toomey.

A small tweak is likely to be added that would benefit Louisiana, a senior GOP aide told me. This would help with Sen. Bill Cassidy's concerns.

they're going the ideological purity route so they don't actually have to do anything and can say it's because they have convctions

Afaict the law says it's illegal to receive contributions, so I don't think it compares to hiring foreign nationals. Hiring Steele might be shady, but legally it compares to having a Canadian data analyst.

this. but I am sure McConnell also plans to offer side deals where he can and bust heads where he can't and hope to break the will of the moderates. it usually works that way.

This article is doing the rounds again:

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/01/ukraine-sabotage-trump-backfire-233446

Chalupa's work for the DNC is probably more comparable than Steele. She overtly solicited information from Ukrainian officials, apparently at the behest of the party, while a paid employee.

The legal technicalities aside, I think it'd probably take awareness that any information was illegally obtained or evidence of a quid pro quo to land Trump Jr in the dock. All of which he might tweet tomorrow so...

when you've lost Rich LOLwry, etc:

I have believed that 1) Trump’s weird defensiveness over Russia had to do with his reflex to reject anything undermining the legitimacy of his election and 2) the forgetfulness of people around him about Russia contacts was normal Washington evasion — it’s never a good time to be forthcoming if it’s going to create a negative news-cycle in an incredibly hostile news environment. But the way this story has unfolded, with Don. Jr.’s highly misleading accounts, raises the prospect that it’s something worse.

In the movie and in real life, as seen in the hearing videos, Senator Orrin Hatch implied that Anita Hill's Coke can claims were inspired by The Exorcist book.

According to video of the hearing, the allegation that Hatch harped on was what Hill alleged as "an occasion in which Thomas was drinking a Coke in his office. He got up from the table at which [he and Hill] were working, went over to his desk to get the Coke, looked at the can and asked, 'Who has put pubic hair on my Coke?'"
