Step-daughter is moving out of her place at the end of the month, says there are several empty in the building and rents have been dropping on the hill. http://www.nwapt.com/harvardcrest.html I think she was paying around $750 for a huge studio (that had a closet big enough for her queen bed, so was more like a 1 bedroom).

is she moving because of any major deficit in the building, or other reasons?

Other reasons - sharing a house with friends in the Central District. I think the only issue she's had in this place is the electric baseboard heaters are crappy (though they work).

i will keep this in mind as a backup, should cheaper things fall through. capitol hill isn't really my #1 choice, but it could be a contender in the event of desperation.

From the Hill. Getting to Seattle Center is a matter of going to Denny Way and then heading down. Since I take the bus it's a little convoluted, but not horribly so. If you're taking the bus it's an No. 8.

the cap hill thing isn't related to seattle center. it's just that i felt other neighborhoods (queen anne, fremont, etc.) were prettier and i felt more 'at home' in them. i liked the area up closer to volunteer park though - near cornish? v pretty. but the more 'main drag' areas seemed like fewer trees, more people, and more of a destination than place to live.

that's definitely true of the main drag. but i think the more residential parts are some of the prettier parts of seattle.

i'm thinking specifically of the area just east of vol park - may be expensive and mostly family homes i guess. madison valley, which is supposed to be relatively cheaper, seems like a nice area.

My favorite neighborhoods for prettiness are Montlake, Mt. Baker, Madrona/Denny Blaine. Spendy and sort of less transit accessible though, esp. Madrona.

I understand completely about Cap Hill, and I'm no chamber of commerce, but I will say that I really like my area of it on 15th--great neighborhood, very unlike the rest of the Hill in feel. But I adore Lower Queen Anne and Wallingford and I hope to eventually move to one of those neighborhoods.

and yeah, my place on 15th is about three blocks from Volunteer Park. not that the weather this week has been especially conductive to visiting it (or leaving the house).

someone just emailed me about a place at 13th/pine. i checked street maps and it's right by the gay bar where my friends and i somehow ended up in someone's picture. also, the next day, we saw lots of people decked out for leather fest or something.

I take the 8 sometimes too, on Denny. Last time I went down Broadway I was shocked at all the buildings that were down, whole blocks of nothing but rubble, even near the community college. Just shocking to see all that. I guess it's true I never go there anymore so this all probably happened ages ago.

I would love to live at 13th & Pine, btw. I'm not planning on moving anytime soon, though. I'm comfortable here in N. Seattle.

ny landlords can suck it.

i don't get the paying for water/sewer thing though.

Utilities are strange here - some places we've lived had W/S/G paid, one had W/S and gas (for the stove) paid. Others have paid for no utilities whatsoever. One place paid for gas (had a gas fireplace, no gas stove), nothing else. This current place pays for water/sewer/garbage and steam heat. It's all over the place.

weird. in ny state landlords pay for all the water/sewer/trash. if you live in a building with more than 3 units, they are required to pay heat/electric/gas as well.

ah well.

one of my coworkers gave me this fun fact on my last day:

Wow, I've lived here for ten years and even though I've made mental groupings in my head of those streets, it never occured to me that so many of them start with the same letters like that.

what is the best san juan for a day trip?

orcas is nice, but the people can be grumpy.

go see the alpacas if you're there, and consider staying overnight at juniper lane guest house. juniper is very nice and it is quite inexpensive.
