clare.malone: I think the people whose seats were in danger are more OK after this bill dies, right?

natesilver: Thatโ€™s my thinking, Clare. The bill was SOOOOOOOOOOOO unpopular that I think that unpopularity outweighs all other considerations. Cruz could be a weird exception, though. I donโ€™t think he came out of this looking good. And I think he has both more primary problems and more general election problems than people acknowledge.

oh please oh please

Also in that story:

McConnell announced Tuesday night that the vote to begin the Obamacare debate โ€” which will fail โ€” will occur next week, at Trumpโ€™s request. Trump is set to met with Senate Republicans on Wednesday.

How much kabuki do you need?

October 15, 2017

President Trump defiantly declared he would "let America fail" today in response to Congress's failure to pass a last-ditch bill which would raise the debt ceiling. The United States' debt will exceed the ceiling at midnight tonight, leaving the US with no alternative but to default on its debts.

The last-ditch bill to raise the debt ceiling was widely unpopular, particularly its provisions outlawing Planned Parenthood, which the American Law Association, in an unusual step, denounced as "clearly unconstitutional", and the last-minute provision inserted by Ted Cruz (R-TX) which would have repealed all taxes on the nation's wealthiest 1%.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell blamed the Democrats for the failure to pass a debt ceiling package. The minority Democrats proposed an alternative bill, which would have raised the debt ceiling with no strings attached, but Majority Leader McConnell refused to take their bill under consideration.

America's debt default is widely expected to lead to economic ruin for the beleaguered nation and economic chaos across the globe. An opinion poll taken today, just after President Trump's statements, saw his approval rating dip slightly to 35%.

First it's revealed there was an undisclosed second conversation with Putin. Then they come out and say, hey, no big deal. The audacity of this administration's complete lack of credibility ... it's like they're trolling critics by doing the exact wrong things in the exact wrong ways.

Is it a conspiracy theory if there are people online saying it? Let's just report what's being said by people who do the saying.

President Keyes, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 14:33 (six years ago) link

I should say, my sources tell me their sources tell me that everyone in this administration will one day die, with a better than zero chance it will be by hanging or firing squad or something. You know, for espionage. (My source, by the way, is Anthony Kiedis, who has been in touch with Agents Moby and Tom Arnold - was it wrong to write all that and unmask them? My bad!).

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 19 July 2017 14:37 (six years ago) link

It's terrifying that we live in a country where you can be executed for treason without being charged or tried beforehand. But that is unquestionably the country in which we live.

"The president has invited all 52 GOP senators to the White House for lunch on Wednesday to see if he can revive the GOP's moribund plans to repeal and replace the 2010 health law."

(โ€ขฬชโ—) (carne asada), Wednesday, 19 July 2017 15:24 (six years ago) link

*sigh* wtf people

The Post-ABC poll shows that Republicans actually hold the advantage in enthusiasm at this early point in the campaign cycle. A 65 percent majority of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents say they are certain they will vote next year, versus 57 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents.

Among Americans who did not cast ballots in the last midterm elections, in 2014, Democrats and Republicans are about equally as likely to say they plan to vote in 2018 โ€” suggesting there is not a disproportionate number of newly motivated Democrats ready to come off the sidelines next year.
