the skinny repeal ideas are also so stupid by themselves - removing the mandates just depletes the pools of insured and removes a funding source. It doesn't remove Obamacare, it just makes it work even more poorly. Which the GOP will be blamed for (one hopes).

And then the Dems can get back into office and pass single payer.

and then the GOP can spend 15 years trying to get that repealed, rinse and repeat

Keeping with his campaign promise to donate his presidential salary to various organizations, President Donald Trump will donate this quarter’s $100,000 salary to the Department of Education, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced Wednesday.

-
President Trump's full budget proposal for fiscal year 2018...calls for a $9.2 billion, or 13.5 percent, spending cut to education. The cuts would be spread across K-12 and aid to higher education, according to documents released by the White House.

xpost to self

actually, that does make sense if you look at it from the perspective of people who vote for him. if they hate the dept of education, he gets to say that his budget is going to ruthlessly cut ed. if they actually care about education and know enough to look into his budget, he can interrupt them and say "fake news. and i donated my salary last quarter to the department of education. no one supports the department of education than i am. no one."

But all this is part of Turtle's plan, right? Get everybody to vote yes on "skinny repeal" so it can go to the House and be replaced with the House bill, which then comes back to the Senate and then Murkowski/Capito/Heller have to vote for it, are they going to be the only things standing between Turtle and victory?

yeah you have to think that would be Ryan's preference

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 20:50 (six years ago) link

he just has to convince the Freedom Caucus that that's all their going to get.

It won't be full repeal but it will totally cripple the system/set it up for further failure. Then they're back in the sweet spot of having voted for repeal, but still getting to complain about Obamacare! Win-Win!

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

So much winning. Are you tired of the winning yet?

okapi paste (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 20:52 (six years ago) link

No individual mandate would kill the ACA anyway -- and the people who depend on it.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 20:52 (six years ago) link

This is what McConnell wanted anyway, I suspect -- now those senators who wanted to salve their consciences have done so, on the record.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

Hard right wonks screaming on Twitter that this leads to a death spiral and inevitable bailout. I'm sure all the donors are thrilled.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 20:54 (six years ago) link

House bill was already voted down in the Senate, I believe...?

Yeah but if it goes to conference and the result of the conference is "OK here's what we hammered out" and it's essentially the same as the original House bill, can't the Senate vote on it? It would formally be a new bill, innocent and dewy.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 26 July 2017 20:56 (six years ago) link

getting to conference with the House doesn't really solve anything - then they just have to renegotiate a bill and bring *that* back to the Senate, where it will probably have a whole bunch of garbage the hard right and the "moderates" don't like, and then we're back to another nail-biting vote with a thin margin for victory.

the above-referenced scenario with the House agreeing to the stripped down "skinny" repeal is probably going to look more attractive to everybody that matters (incl Trump)

So let me understand, "skinny repeal" is the one where individual mandate goes away but insurers still have to abide by ACA regulations so they quickly stop offering coverage and there's a massive crisis?

Can they really get everything past the senate parliamentarian, though? Wouldn't it have to impact the budget to get under budget reconciliation? I don't understand what's going on at the moment.
