Keeping with his campaign promise to donate his presidential salary to various organizations, President Donald Trump will donate this quarter’s $100,000 salary to the Department of Education, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced Wednesday.

President Trump's full budget proposal for fiscal year 2018...calls for a $9.2 billion, or 13.5 percent, spending cut to education. The cuts would be spread across K-12 and aid to higher education, according to documents released by the White House.

actually, that does make sense if you look at it from the perspective of people who vote for him. if they hate the dept of education, he gets to say that his budget is going to ruthlessly cut ed. if they actually care about education and know enough to look into his budget, he can interrupt them and say "fake news. and i donated my salary last quarter to the department of education. no one supports the department of education than i am. no one."

Yeah but if it goes to conference and the result of the conference is "OK here's what we hammered out" and it's essentially the same as the original House bill, can't the Senate vote on it? It would formally be a new bill, innocent and dewy.

getting to conference with the House doesn't really solve anything - then they just have to renegotiate a bill and bring *that* back to the Senate, where it will probably have a whole bunch of garbage the hard right and the "moderates" don't like, and then we're back to another nail-biting vote with a thin margin for victory.

the above-referenced scenario with the House agreeing to the stripped down "skinny" repeal is probably going to look more attractive to everybody that matters (incl Trump)
