You people stayed up for this stuff, huh

lol, I was thinking the same thing about the Senate while I was watching.

Was all worth it for the brief moment I thought Mitch would start crying, like he just watched McCain maverick the family dog after mavericking Mitch in the nuts.

Is there any reason they just can't do this all again?

xpost tbf, McCain literally said, before voting to advance debate, that he was a no on the bill as written.

I can't be the only one wondering if McCain is mirroring Lukas Haas's arc in Everyone Says I Love You.

You are the only one who remembers Lukas Haas's arc in Everyone Says I Love You.

I also enjoyed Cornyn's smug rejoinder to Schumer's pleas of a bipartisan restart last night. "Oh, you don't want a mysterious late night vote on a secret bill, huh? Well, that's what you did, and now we're going to do it to you, punk!" And then they couldn't do it.

Comment somewhere that gave me the sad lols: the two women senators who voted no now feel like every woman in a meeting, ever.

The whole thing was ridiculous. Why did any of them vote on a bill they wanted the House to overturn?

it really does look like he looks directly at McConnell after he gives the thumbs-down -- casts the vote looking at the podium, swivels his head to look at McC, pauses for a second to make sure it registers, then bails

I love how forlorn McConnell looks as McCain does his gestures; his jowls actually deepen and sink.

One of the small triumphs I'll take from this morning's vote is the shredding of Mitch McConnell's reputation for Master Tactitian.

We shoudl also note that McConnell didn't switch his vote to NO at the last minute so that he could bring this up again, a sure sign that health care repeal looks – I stress looks – dead.

Putting aside McCain's obvious showboating (the relevant analogy is Kirk Gibson in 1988, I think), I don't think staying home would have achieved the same result. The same in stopping the bill, yes, but the Republican whining about a lost vote because of a cancer-stricken member would have been very different symbolically, no?

the two women senators who voted no now feel like every woman in a meeting, ever. Agree with that.

Collins and Murkowski deserve the bouquets. They were threatened and bullied and they didn't budge.

awww:

Singer Rod Stewart stepped in to pay five-figure travel costs for a group of children with disabilities who traveled to Washington to protest the GOP healthcare bill that would cut Medicaid, CNN reported Wednesday.

Stewart said he acted after seeing news coverage about the children, who didn’t have the $30,000 it would take for them to travel from Baton Rouge, La., to Washington.

"He was so touched and heartbroken and actually teary," Stewart’s campaign manager Arnold Stiefe said.

"Some of you may know that I live in America and pay my taxes here," the British singer said. "I'm neither a Democrat nor a Republican, but I am a father."

Angela Lorio, the organizer of the Trach Mommas, an advocacy group that supports families with children with disabilities, said the check from the musician was “the biggest check of her life” and that she was grateful to Stewart for paying for the trip.

"It was beyond our wildest dreams — not just anybody paid for it, but Rod Stewart!" she said. "God always hears your prayers and answers them — they just might not be answered in the way that you expect."

So is dips hit going to sign the Russian sanctions bill? It'd be perfect, which is to say, predictable, if he was waiting pen in hand to sign some shitty partisan health care bill, but refused to sign a fully bipartisan and justified bill punishing his benefactor.

Would really like it if this was the end fo him. But I bet he's coming back with something else rapidly.
That recess thing is happening now so what's that it until September? At which point it will be too late to sneak anything in under the guise of budget won't it?
but would love him to be the next part of the swamp to go down the drain.

Stevolende, Friday, 28 July 2017 13:44 (six years ago) link

They would have brought something back if the motion to open debate had been blocked -- there were arguments from Thune and others about that earlier this week. But it was opened, the options were presented and all crashed and burned. And nobody is pretending now -- especially with the votes now on record -- that there was some mystical bill that could in fact get the necessary fifty votes.

That's what gives me optimism that the zombie bill is truly dead. Everyone's on the record already; to change a vote would mean a primary or a sure loss to a Democrat next year.

We should remember that this is the logical outcome of Mitch McConnell repeatedly siding with liberal and moderate Republicans. It was Senator McConnell who sided with Lisa Murkowski after she left the GOP. McConnell aligned the NRSC against the Republican candidate against Murkowski. It was McConnell who turned the NRSC into an incumbent protection service that tried to even get Charlie Crist elected as a Republican.

Theatrics and (as always) sucking-up-to-the-press aside, that's why I think it matters that McCain came in and voted. I'd even say (and if you go back before this whole episode, I've always been very critical of McCain on here, especially with regards to 2008) that some part of him is pining back to what he remembers as the halcyon days of deal-making with Tip O'Neill. I don't know that era very well--if so, I'm sure his memory is very selective.

Trump, constitutional scholar

If Republicans are going to pass great future legislation in the Senate, they must immediately go to a 51 vote majority, not senseless 60...

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 28, 2017

Surprised he didn't make that 50 and say the two women shouldn't count.

"Now I think it's appropriate to ask, what are their ideas?"

Jesus Christ, the selective memory.

1. Obamacare itself (tweaked or un-)

2. HRC's plan (not necessarily great but hardly a secret)

3. Medicare for all / public option

4. Single payer

Acting like there's been nothing but silence and obstruction and no plans presented is really cute and completely disingenuous, Mitch. To be fair, that's more like your party's playbook, so I can see why you might be confused at your age.
