I'm at the market pretty much each and every Sunday. I usually park on R near Teaism. If I weren't such a lazy shit I would ride my bike instead of drive, but parking is usually easy on Sunday a.m.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Oh really??? I plan to do a lot of my shopping there for produce, everything looked so great there. I honestly had no idea it was even there. After we move in, you should stop by on a Sunday and we can get bubble tea and, uh, produce I guess.

Wow, Dupont, very nice. I haven't been to the farmer's market. Of course, I should prob go to Eastern Market as it's quite close.. is the Dupont one super expensive?

I have to get my DC tags so I can start taking the 90 bus instead of driving back and forth across the entire city every day. (I can't afford the $$ for my DC tags until I get paid.. luckily I've found a nice parking spot across the street from work with a broken meter..)

Eastern Market has some great meat. I think, now, I will make more of an effort to go there and of course no effort required for farmer's market. I usually use Safeway's delivery service for groceries but sometimes that doesn't work out so hot for produce and meats (though honestly it doesn't work out as badly as you'd assume, either, Safeway does a good job overall packing stuff and keeping the temperature correct). The Dupont one didn't seem super expensive though, no.

Apparently last sunday while we were wandering around the farmer's market Nicole Kidman was also doing the same.

Darla I still have to get my DC license--we should meet up at the Georgetown DMV!

The farmer's market can be quite pricey if you aren't disciplined, but good ingredients from actual local farmers are one of those things for which I'm willing to pay a premium (file under "stupid little things your a snob about"). Besides, it's almost always cheaper to cook at home than eat out.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:48 (eighteen years ago) link

you're, even

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I think that now we live half a block from the metro escalators and no longer have to traverse stairs and hallways to wash clothing and you are talking so much about grocery adventures that I will finally go ahead and achieve my longtime dream of getting enormously fat, like Mr. Pipe-Smoking Cessna-Pilot Robot-Owner Karate Republican eHarmony.com Steganography Man.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 15:51 (eighteen years ago) link

you should totally walk up the escalator. don't be one of the sheep just waiting around the interminable ride up, or worse, one of those situationally unaware not-standing-to-the-right people.

carly (carly), Friday, 18 November 2005 15:59 (eighteen years ago) link

rawk, ally & tom. by the way, everyone - we're finally doing mandalay over thanksgiving weekend. anyone who wants in, c'mon down. if not, no big deal.

carly, those people must die.

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Part of me wants to refuse to get a DC license because I only JUST GOT my VA one, but really I think I would prefer to have the LOL PWN of an actual city resident ID instead of just being another obvious transient yuphole.

Are we talking Saturday, Zack? I should be back from in-law land by then!

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:04 (eighteen years ago) link

OK, so Darla, Tom, Ally and I all have a date with the DMV. Let's FADL (Fancy a Driver's License)!

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:05 (eighteen years ago) link

I thought you already were enormously fat, Tom.

xpost oh I refuse to give up my NY licence. It's good for like 10 years. I'm still in denial about moving.

yeah, saturday sounds good. cbg, you in?

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:07 (eighteen years ago) link

what times y'all talking about on Saturday? We gotta go see the Priestman and the DJ but I think like any time after 6 would be A-OK.

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:20 (eighteen years ago) link

the Dupont farmers market provided a lot of my food when I lived on 20th b/w P and O, and it's pretty cheap as long as you aren't buying $6 bags of pre-sorted salad greens. the woman with the berries on 20th closer to Mass is the best. but doesn't it end around now, or has it gone year-round?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:23 (eighteen years ago) link

We are under the impression it will maintain over the winter. BUT could be wrong.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:24 (eighteen years ago) link

i am working on thanksgiving in order to maximize the awesome of the weekend - not having to be back here by saturday for example. so i'm free/in. but what about dim sum, the food by which i was seduced back to the dc area?

carly (carly), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:33 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost re: dupont farmer's market. It's year-round, but there are only a handful of venders in the winter months. Lots of, like, turnips and stuff.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Carly I love dim sum! There are several places up here in r'ville that have dim sum available all day, every day.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

even though i live in chinatown and there are probably nine million dim sum places in my apartment, they are that close and prevalent. rockville pike has a special place in my heart, hot and sour cucumbers, thousand layer pancake, and sesame peanut chewy noodles have a special place in my belly.

carly (carly), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:39 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost, yeah quincie, a&j is my favorite place ever.

carly (carly), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:40 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean, i could be persuaded to sub a&j, but tofu in coconut cream sauce is crooning to my stomach right now

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you suppose our new landlords will let us get a big grill and put it on the shared patio out back? This grill will be given to us by relatives as a reward for hooking up, so it may be quite large and feature-laden.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:42 (eighteen years ago) link

whoa--I think I'm gonna have to go to a&j for lunch now! See also: Michael's Noodles in Travilah Square for dim sum goodness any time.

Tombot and ally when does youse move?

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:43 (eighteen years ago) link

? WTF kind of person buys an enormous expensive grill for someone as a wedding present? I REALLY would prefer it, btw, though there is no "nice" way to inform people of this, if they didn't buy us very much at ALL, like replace some appliances OK that's cool, maybe some linens, but that's IT, and just gave us fucking money, ie something we need more than a grill. I don't even like barbeque that much, Tom. This has nothing to do with this thread, sorry.

Moving in a week or two...we can move whenever we want basically.

I'm not continuing this conversation on the thread.

I am just back from A&J, where I ate bean curd with carrots and celery and a big bowl of spicy sesame noodles with peanut powder. Yum! I also stopped and had gregggggg trim my bangs. Such a productive lunch hour(+). Shall I do some work now or mess about on ILX for the rest of the day?

How to Survive a Robot Uprising

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Robots have no emotions -- sensing your fear can stir feelings of jealousy, resulting in a white-hot robot rage.

Hahaha...

Spink, Friday, 18 November 2005 19:05 (eighteen years ago) link

BTW did anybody else hear about the jumper at Columbia Heights metro last night, who SURVIVED?

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 19:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Urgh; that's one incompetent depressed person.

You must get the grill! It gives you another excuse to escape boring conversations at parties/heated arguments in the kitchen. And if it's large enough, it can be a guest room.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Undisclosed Location: Greetings. Purely hypothetically, if you were an evil mastermind, working on perfecting an army of robots to enslave the world, what would be the critical elements for creating a truly epic reign of terror? Flashing red eyes? Giant metallic tentacles? Synchronized marching?

Daniel H. Wilson: Purely hypothetically, the first problem is how to hide a robot army that is big enough to conquer the world. In the book, I describe the situation that happens in "I, Robot" where essentially a virus spreads among servant robots. The virus -- guess what -- makes them evil and all homicidal.

Burning red eyes are helpful to clue in the humans that don't understand that their servant robots aren't going to take it anymore...

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:08 (eighteen years ago) link

haha that discussion is great!

We have been discussing robot bears during this session, and I would be remiss if I failed to mention that robot-bear-rape could be on the horizon.

Sadly, I forgot to include this chapter in my book. If you are mounted by a robotic bear, try to slip on an anti-static bracelet and tie it to a metal bedpost.
