Ronan local Garda said something about wearing nice socks even if nobody knows you know you're wearing nice socks once and now I wear nice socks.

have you stopped to think that if you find the right girl now you'll miss out on all the wrong girls.

aero, stevie and alex in MTL have all saved my life (literally) off-board. I knew aero before ILX but met the other two through this site. Thank you, site

Scott and DJP are my favourite posters and have most influenced my outlook on life

maura and katherine are two of my favourite writers

estela is my favourite comedy entity

alfred and lex's cultural digestive enzymes are so oblique to my own and it's been amazing to get their perspectives

Milton Parker and sarahel for challenging me on my bullshit

VG and emil.y for being compassionate and funny

I knew wgw before ilx also but he's always the entertainment and frankly his end-of-year compilations would keep me logging in til dead

Everybody else contributes so much there were some posters I didn't like but I don't see them much any more

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 7 October 2017 17:22 (six years ago) link

Rex Sweeney, a now mostly forgotten poster who confined himself to Ask A Drunk back when AAD was a living, breathing entity. He was the heart and soul of the place back when AAD was almost the only thing keeping me propped up and functioning.

i'm a bit too shy to name names but i discovered this site when i was 16 or 17 years old and still read it daily 10 years later so u could say it had an impact ya

flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 20:48 (six years ago) link

hopefully my answer is obvious

El Tomboto, Saturday, 7 October 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

oh actually one that i'm not ashamed to say is that BradNelson has introduced me to like, a half a dozen of my favourite albums of the last few years, and in the process has gotten me to rethink and ultimately completely rewire my tastes in rock music, in a way not unlike how '07 era teenybopper/r&b crews did

flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 21:12 (six years ago) link

frogs, clouds, nxd, brim, and everyone else on the vaporwave thread. I salute you

calstars, Saturday, 7 October 2017 21:29 (six years ago) link

Number one for me is Aldo who challenged me on eating cheese on some terrible old thread about vegetarianism, and because my arguments just felt like rote bullshit, it led to me doing some actual research and really questioning my dietary choices, and as a result of that I went vegan. Have now been vegan for over ten years and apart from improving my health and introducing me to a shitload of excellent new foods, it really fucking rearranged my head and made me question so much more about the assumptions that my worldview was built on. My wife went vegan too so her life was changed as well. Maybe this would've happened anyway, but Aldo's was the hand that gave me the final shove through the door. Kind of ironic that he's a meat-eater I guess.

That aside there's a whole bunch of other people that have made me just plain *think more* and I'm really grateful for that. Don't want to start listing people cos there are many, but I do want to give a shout out to Kate and Lex, both of whose presence I miss

tim f, lex, and vahid had a transformative impact on my taste in music at an age when i was voraciously soaking up everything that altered my mind. i'm so, so thankful that they shared their opinions here and that i got the opportunity to be influenced by such incredibly intelligent people. but more than any specific person, the depth and sincerity of some of the conversation on ilx as a whole humbled me when i needed it and has made me a more empathetic, more thoughtful person

one person i'm frickin pissed doesn't post here anymore is some dude

flopson, Saturday, 7 October 2017 23:37 (six years ago) link

Been thinking about this and the honest sad answer is "none have" I think; I'm newish to the site and I don't think my life has transformed in any appreciable way since, certainly not positively

That's my fault tho, I can definitely name posters I ought to have learned from. Hoos, goon tie, noodle all sources of inspiration and wisdom.

Darragh and Louis I can disagree with forever but stick us in a room and I think we're on a wavelength - that prob goes for most of you fucks to a lesser extent

Oh and the poster I'm most like "wait are we sure this isn't me?" might be a passing spacecadet

And I like Ross, who I'm afraid I never really noticed before the twin peaks thread. Corny as it is I feel fondly toward everyone I shot the shit with over those three months when that show was airing, I guess that's my equiv of that eagles thread.

:-) just to be clear tho the first para is referring to the ilx poster "a passing spacecadet"

good art is orange; great art is teal (wins), Sunday, 8 October 2017 00:03 (six years ago) link

Every post on this thread that doesn’t mention me just makes me want to work harder

El Tomboto, Sunday, 8 October 2017 00:04 (six years ago) link

wait ross are you a passing spacecadet?? (xp)

also agreed re some dude, i would visit ILM more than once in a blue moon if he still posted there

qualx, Sunday, 8 October 2017 00:04 (six years ago) link

Also a couple of years ago when I made fb acquaintance with a certain Joan Crawford he said the kindest things to me that I didn't deserve

Xp no aps and Ross are not the same

cosign this post 100% (though i didn't interact with vahid as much on the music threads back in the day i don't think). i'm a stubborn asshole so i don't always admit when someone on ilx has changed my mind, but it happens frequently, and i honestly have no idea what my life would be like if i hadn't had ilx. i love you all

k3vin k., Sunday, 8 October 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link

and yeah, some dude too. i don't really post on ILM much anymore so i hadn't even noticed he left! he's still on twitter tho

yeah i thank god for being a mostly-politely-tolerated second-tier filler poster. you guys are great but i'm happier being an aging barfly with no last name.
