i checked it out at an apple store today - felt surprisingly bigger than the 6/7/8 sizes although it's not supposed to be that much bigger

. Out for delivery.........

Saw one at the Apple Store today. It's ... nice? Not having the home button seems to be NBD, though it's harder to get to the camera now. The screen doesn't seem evenly lit -- in the books app there are various tone shifts in the white page. The size feels a bit odd -- it's narrower than I'd thought. I think I'd prefer something less deep and more wide.

There was a reasonable line at the store, but nothing at all like when the 6 came out.

stet, Friday, 3 November 2017 15:29 (seven years ago) link

harder to get to the camera? don't you just swipe left from the lock screen?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 3 November 2017 16:00 (seven years ago) link

That still works on the lock screen, yep. My problem is from the home screen or in apps. Right now control centre is easy to get by swiping up from the bottom -- and then the camera button's under yr thumb. But now you have to swipe down from the hard-to-reach top-right corner and your thumb ends up in the wrong place to hit it.

stet, Friday, 3 November 2017 17:21 (seven years ago) link

control centre is fucked imo. swiping down one-handed from top for full audio controls is barely possible even on my SE

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Friday, 3 November 2017 17:50 (seven years ago) link

100% otm. should be a slide up from the right side of the screen or something

Spottie, Friday, 3 November 2017 18:15 (seven years ago) link

Not having the home button seems to be NBD

on day one sure, but given how quickly edge-swipe gestures went out the fucking window on the iphone 6 (even by ios 10 edge swiping had become pot luck), we need to see how well it still works when ios 13 comes out. that was my second reason for not getting an X (the first was price).

The screen doesn't seem evenly lit -- in the books app there are various tone shifts in the white page.

isn’t that a key appeal of oled? pretty bad if the Xes are all like that tbh.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 3 November 2017 19:57 (seven years ago) link

i'm thinking they'll probably add some kind of Expose type set up in iOS where you can designate which swipes do what functions. top right for control center sucks

, Friday, 3 November 2017 20:12 (seven years ago) link

it's enough to deter me from buying it atm

Spottie, Friday, 3 November 2017 20:14 (seven years ago) link

xp they might have to, just to keep it usable with one hand.

it also seems an odd decision to add yet another row of app icons. the idea of a persistent dock just for apps is probably lost on most people who don’t even use all 28 apps on their home screen, so why not do something useful with that?

In CNN review, identical twin unlocks her sister's iPhone X on first attempt using Face ID. I hope X buyers with twin siblings really trust each other. (This wouldn't work with Touch ID because fingerprints aren't genetic, so identical twins won't have different fingerprints.)

have heard this. maybe it's to do with the tiny tiny circuitry (which is legitimately fantastic).

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 3 November 2017 23:52 (seven years ago) link

Will wait for X 3GS

calstars, Saturday, 4 November 2017 00:32 (seven years ago) link

It cooled down. Setting it up was certainly warming it up.

Overall, going to take getting used to. I miss the width of the plus, but I think it will just take time till I get used to the vertical space.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 00:50 (seven years ago) link

Be really interested to know how you get on with that over time. I love the width of the plus, it’s just too deep.

And for what I mostly do (read stuff) extra depth doesn’t give me much — I keep my eyes in place and scroll stuff up to them.

stet, Saturday, 4 November 2017 11:21 (seven years ago) link

Time will tell. A couple of things that don't bother me are face ID and the lack of home button.

Face ID is a smidge slower when unlocking the phone, but where it is better is with apps. Seems quicker to unlock dropbox/banking apps/etc with it, especially if you are switching back and forth between apps, you just don't have to continually put your finger on a button. Still, you're probably unlocking your phone more than you are doing this, so weigh your options.

Never want a home button again, the gestures work great. Especially the app switcher, just draw an upside down L and it goes right into it. No need to swipe up and pause, which seems less natural.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 12:25 (seven years ago) link

But no home button means I pick up my phone upside down half the time.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 12:33 (seven years ago) link

Face ID doesn’t work if I try to unlock while brushing my teeth.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 12:39 (seven years ago) link

lol smh

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 4 November 2017 12:47 (seven years ago) link

That’s a long two minutes of doing nothing if I can’t use my phone while brushing my teeth!!

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 14:01 (seven years ago) link

What if you get your identical twin to brush your teeth?

Alba, Saturday, 4 November 2017 14:08 (seven years ago) link

I’m assuming it won’t unlock while you’re pouring beer into your mouth and this seems like a flaw

Possible you just need to upgrade to a smarter toothbrush.

mick signals, Saturday, 4 November 2017 14:16 (seven years ago) link

My issues with this so far coming from iPhone 6

Awkward to hold. This just not a 1 handed phone. The home button replacement really forces you to interact way down at the bottom which means it’s hard to balance. Maybe I’ll get used to it.

Don’t like the bar at the bottom of everything to show where the home button is. Too contrasty - it should be shades of gray or semi-transparent.

Speaking of contrast, while the screen pops, its verging on garish and the whites seem harsh - again something I may get used to. I wish there was a saturation control.

Jury is still out, but I’ll be looking at Black Friday deals on the 8 as my return window closes.

I may still love it, well see.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 14:21 (seven years ago) link

I think the big problem is that with the button you can perform the same action (pressing the button) in the same place. The swipe makes your thumb move quite a bit and since the phone is heavy and long you have to reposition your hand. Also, if you're just holding it one handed in the middle and scrolling through a feed or story, then to hit home, you have to completely shift your hand (unless you have a very long thumb). Awkward.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 17:50 (seven years ago) link

Just got a haircut, Face ID still works. Will try brushing my teeth again.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 18:04 (seven years ago) link

On this video, it's clear that the iPhone X is being held to a wall or table at the top and that the hand is working with a physically supported phone. I'm sure they do this with all their commercials, but in this case, I don't think most people's single hands are capable of what they're doing here:

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 18:10 (seven years ago) link

Also, why do I have to swipe up from the lock screen to get to the home screen if my face has already unlocked it?

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 18:11 (seven years ago) link

I assume to give you a chance to read your notifications. Otherwise it would make sense to just go to the home screen.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 18:18 (seven years ago) link

Ah, good point.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 18:32 (seven years ago) link

One trick I noticed is that if it's on your desk, if you look at it and tap the screen it wakes up (so you don't have to pick it up to do the face ID thing).

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 18:35 (seven years ago) link

My evolved thoughts after 24 hours, it definitely feels like a work in progress in many ways. After some iOS tweaks and the version next year will probably be awesome. No regrets, it’s fun to have the latest greatest. Not sure I would recommend buying outright over the 8/8+, but if you are on an upgrade Plan, well worth the little bit extra a month.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 18:44 (seven years ago) link

Jeff, are you coming from a Plus phone?

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 18:52 (seven years ago) link

Yep, 7+

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 18:53 (seven years ago) link

So you're used to mainly 2 handed use?

It seems like X makes the Plus phones virtually obsolete going forward. Same screen in a smaller form factor for 20% more $.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 19:07 (seven years ago) link

get bigger hands

mh, Saturday, 4 November 2017 19:20 (seven years ago) link

I had a little finger strap on the back of my plus, so I was primarily one handed. I think I do like the x form factor better, but still miss the width of the plus.

Jeff, Saturday, 4 November 2017 19:27 (seven years ago) link

I can play piano with stubby fingers but I can't use a large phone

.oO (silby), Saturday, 4 November 2017 19:38 (seven years ago) link

thanks so much jeff & spencer for your impressions. the changes in use and the teething problems are expected, and on the whole it sounds pretty bloody good for a first iteration.

After some iOS tweaks and the version next year will probably be awesome.

otm, ios 12 will be fantastic. even 11.2 might sort out a few of the x niggles, e.g. spencer's comment about the overly high contrast of the home bar.

rove mcmanus island (Autumn Almanac), Saturday, 4 November 2017 20:32 (seven years ago) link

I see now how to hold it one handed. You don’t actually grip it but let it rest on your fingers.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 21:16 (seven years ago) link

which is what i did on my 6 but I would actually have some grip on it.

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 4 November 2017 21:36 (seven years ago) link

holding it wrong, indeed
