Goldderby summa. Let's see if Chalamet, the frontrunner, can shake off Oldman:

The Phoenix Critics Circle (PCC) had two picks for the best pic of the year: “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” This marks the first win for either film from any of the 14 critics groups heard from to date. “The Florida Project” and “Get Out” have four wins apiece from the critics.

The Phoenix scribes awarded Best Actress to both Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”), and Oscar frontrunner Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”). The former leads the latter by a margin of six wins to four.

Timothee Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name”) won over the Phoenix critics thus bringing his total up to five. He continues to widen the gap with the two other leading Best Actor Oscar contenders who have each picked up a pair of prizes: Daniel Day-Lewis (“Phantom Thread”) and Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”).

While Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) picked up his third critics award, Supporting Actor Oscar frontrunner Willem Dafoe (“The Florida Project”) already has nine crowding his mantle. And with her win with the PCC, Best Supporting Actress Oscar frontrunner Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”) now has nine as well while her closest rival, Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”), remains at four.

The Phoenix folks went with Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”) for Best Director and split the screenplay award between Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), Martin McDonagh (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) and Jordan Peele (“Get Out”).

And this reluctant member tossed her a vote too.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 18 December 2017 18:49 (six years ago) link

Also, I have no idea how that dead people "nominees" thing came about.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 18 December 2017 18:50 (six years ago) link

Phantom Thread listed but not DDL is curious

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 December 2017 18:50 (six years ago) link

Also, critics award ties are the actual worst.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Monday, 18 December 2017 18:51 (six years ago) link

THE GOLD STANDARD

are they made of gold? I thought they were chocolate.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 December 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

hence Harvey Weinstein's have vanished

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 December 2017 18:55 (six years ago) link

I gave Cynthia Nixon a nod too, along with Aubrey Plaza. Morbs' beloved Nahuel Pérez Biscayart among my actors.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 December 2017 18:56 (six years ago) link

whither Adam Sandler?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 December 2017 18:57 (six years ago) link

you'd think having an "arc" that finishes with washing your hands of Dustin Hoffman would have appeal

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 18 December 2017 18:59 (six years ago) link

Dunkirk, Three Billboards AND Wonder Wheel!

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 18 December 2017 21:01 (six years ago) link

At least Nolan, with skillful economy (100 fucking boyband rejects and Branagh's eyebrows) reminds us that war is fucking ace when you are the eventual victor. It pisses all over Paths Of Glory.

I have a pdf of that issue. I can dropbox it if anyone is interested.

A handful of critics seem to really like The Blackcoat's Daughter (directed by Oz Perkins, son of Anthony), but I found it alternately dull and yucky (but mostly dull).

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 18:21 (six years ago) link

blackcoat's daughter is terrrrrrrrrible i have no idea what people see in it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 18:26 (six years ago) link

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 18:47 (six years ago) link

no, but I'm off tomorrow and was toying with seeing a noon arthouse showing.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 19:14 (six years ago) link

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 21:09 (six years ago) link

I watched the first couple of installments - not yet convinced the diversion from Morris' usual style is particularly productive

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 December 2017 14:48 (six years ago) link

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Willem Dafoe – The Florida Project

You didn't make enough phone calls beforehand, evidently.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 December 2017 15:00 (six years ago) link

hey man I used up minutes getting Nixon in.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 December 2017 15:02 (six years ago) link

Barry Keoghan – The Killing of A Sacred Deer

ok, wasn't expecting that

i notice this year in pretty much ALL the groups and orgs, the best sctors and scripts ALL speak/are in English

didn't used to happen

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 December 2017 15:49 (six years ago) link

Since Bergman stopped making movies, more often than not tho.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:09 (six years ago) link

As austerity politics has been tough to national film funding, a lot of international directors are making films in English as well. Lanthimos and Guadagnino and del Toro most conspicuously this year.

Bilge Ebiri posits a #1 that not many have yet: https://www.villagevoice.com/2017/12/21/songs-from-a-sunken-place-the-best-films-of-2017/

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 December 2017 17:19 (six years ago) link

I'd hoped that would be After the Storm, which is the best Kore-eda in ages. Really, really, good.

Frederik B, Thursday, 21 December 2017 17:37 (six years ago) link

I thought After the Storm was pleasant, but I struggle to think of anything remarkable about it. The few reviews I've read of it mirror your reaction far more than mine, though.

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Thursday, 21 December 2017 23:44 (six years ago) link

For me it's mostly that I thought Kore-eda had become too saccharine and slick on his latest films, but there's both some real darkness, and some unexpected filmic choices, in After the Storm. For instance the male lead is kinda too tall for a lot of the camera setups, which never failed to amuse me.

Frederik B, Friday, 22 December 2017 01:12 (six years ago) link

I can catch up on one of these three contenders today, which one do I go see?

Call Me By Your Name
Florida Project
Good Time

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 22 December 2017 12:01 (six years ago) link

The first and third.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 22 December 2017 12:20 (six years ago) link

I liked The Florida Project but I'd still agree with Alfred.

Alba, Friday, 22 December 2017 12:48 (six years ago) link

Oh, wait only one. That is hard! Good Time is a safer bet but I'd personally say CMBYN.

Alba, Friday, 22 December 2017 12:50 (six years ago) link

thanks guys CMBYN was lovely :)

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 22 December 2017 20:35 (six years ago) link

Wait till you see the lovelinesss of The Florida Project!

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 22 December 2017 20:48 (six years ago) link

We recognized the loveliness of The Florida Project after all. I didn't expect a Dunkirk win. I included my final ballot therein.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 December 2017 13:28 (six years ago) link

Lol. On the other hand, you're the only group to not choose Dafoe, no?

Frederik B, Sunday, 24 December 2017 13:31 (six years ago) link

I'd trade every Alison Janney in the world for one Dafoe.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 December 2017 13:41 (six years ago) link

Aw, why do you hate on Alison Janney, I like her :(

Frederik B, Sunday, 24 December 2017 14:17 (six years ago) link

*google's "I hate Alison Janney" as part of my research to uncover whether ILX is the one place on the internet where you can find people being mean about Alison Janney*
