A handful of critics seem to really like The Blackcoat's Daughter (directed by Oz Perkins, son of Anthony), but I found it alternately dull and yucky (but mostly dull).

I'd hoped that would be After the Storm, which is the best Kore-eda in ages. Really, really, good.

I thought After the Storm was pleasant, but I struggle to think of anything remarkable about it. The few reviews I've read of it mirror your reaction far more than mine, though.

For me it's mostly that I thought Kore-eda had become too saccharine and slick on his latest films, but there's both some real darkness, and some unexpected filmic choices, in After the Storm. For instance the male lead is kinda too tall for a lot of the camera setups, which never failed to amuse me.

I can catch up on one of these three contenders today, which one do I go see?
