We are under the impression it will maintain over the winter. BUT could be wrong.

i am working on thanksgiving in order to maximize the awesome of the weekend - not having to be back here by saturday for example. so i'm free/in. but what about dim sum, the food by which i was seduced back to the dc area?

carly (carly), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:33 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost re: dupont farmer's market. It's year-round, but there are only a handful of venders in the winter months. Lots of, like, turnips and stuff.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Carly I love dim sum! There are several places up here in r'ville that have dim sum available all day, every day.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:36 (eighteen years ago) link

even though i live in chinatown and there are probably nine million dim sum places in my apartment, they are that close and prevalent. rockville pike has a special place in my heart, hot and sour cucumbers, thousand layer pancake, and sesame peanut chewy noodles have a special place in my belly.

carly (carly), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:39 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost, yeah quincie, a&j is my favorite place ever.

carly (carly), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:40 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean, i could be persuaded to sub a&j, but tofu in coconut cream sauce is crooning to my stomach right now

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:42 (eighteen years ago) link

Do you suppose our new landlords will let us get a big grill and put it on the shared patio out back? This grill will be given to us by relatives as a reward for hooking up, so it may be quite large and feature-laden.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:42 (eighteen years ago) link

whoa--I think I'm gonna have to go to a&j for lunch now! See also: Michael's Noodles in Travilah Square for dim sum goodness any time.

Tombot and ally when does youse move?

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:43 (eighteen years ago) link

? WTF kind of person buys an enormous expensive grill for someone as a wedding present? I REALLY would prefer it, btw, though there is no "nice" way to inform people of this, if they didn't buy us very much at ALL, like replace some appliances OK that's cool, maybe some linens, but that's IT, and just gave us fucking money, ie something we need more than a grill. I don't even like barbeque that much, Tom. This has nothing to do with this thread, sorry.

Moving in a week or two...we can move whenever we want basically.

But I like grilling! It makes me seem competent!

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 16:51 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not continuing this conversation on the thread.

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 16:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I am just back from A&J, where I ate bean curd with carrots and celery and a big bowl of spicy sesame noodles with peanut powder. Yum! I also stopped and had gregggggg trim my bangs. Such a productive lunch hour(+). Shall I do some work now or mess about on ILX for the rest of the day?

How to Survive a Robot Uprising

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 18:51 (eighteen years ago) link

Robots have no emotions -- sensing your fear can stir feelings of jealousy, resulting in a white-hot robot rage.

Hahaha...

Spink, Friday, 18 November 2005 19:05 (eighteen years ago) link

BTW did anybody else hear about the jumper at Columbia Heights metro last night, who SURVIVED?

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 19:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Urgh; that's one incompetent depressed person.

You must get the grill! It gives you another excuse to escape boring conversations at parties/heated arguments in the kitchen. And if it's large enough, it can be a guest room.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 18 November 2005 19:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Undisclosed Location: Greetings. Purely hypothetically, if you were an evil mastermind, working on perfecting an army of robots to enslave the world, what would be the critical elements for creating a truly epic reign of terror? Flashing red eyes? Giant metallic tentacles? Synchronized marching?

Daniel H. Wilson: Purely hypothetically, the first problem is how to hide a robot army that is big enough to conquer the world. In the book, I describe the situation that happens in "I, Robot" where essentially a virus spreads among servant robots. The virus -- guess what -- makes them evil and all homicidal.

Burning red eyes are helpful to clue in the humans that don't understand that their servant robots aren't going to take it anymore...

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:08 (eighteen years ago) link

haha that discussion is great!

We have been discussing robot bears during this session, and I would be remiss if I failed to mention that robot-bear-rape could be on the horizon.

Sadly, I forgot to include this chapter in my book. If you are mounted by a robotic bear, try to slip on an anti-static bracelet and tie it to a metal bedpost.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 20:49 (eighteen years ago) link

dude am I the only fucking person on ILX who doesn't know how to italicize? Fuck it, I'm jumping in front of a Metro.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 20:50 (eighteen years ago) link

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 20:56 (eighteen years ago) link

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:58 (eighteen years ago) link

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 20:58 (eighteen years ago) link

It actually took me a moment to figure out what that meant, ally!

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

ZR (teenagequiet), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

More drug slang.

So when/where are we having the CELEBRATORY n/a IN ARLINGTON FOR XMAS FAP?

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks to recent develops at work, I will not, in fact, be traveling to Birmingham, AL and will, in fact, be here in DC all of December and January. So yeah, bring on some holiday cheer!

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 21:03 (eighteen years ago) link

nick thinks he can just barge into OUR CITY thread! fuck that!

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:05 (eighteen years ago) link

DEC 22-26 whut whut

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Recovering from last weekend in NYC! Seeing the premiere of a friend's new movie. And testing red wines.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Plus Johnny Cash.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:06 (eighteen years ago) link

is "testing red wines" drug slang?

Also, I still don't know what the fuck the title of this thread means.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 21:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I may also be testing some sesame noodles, now that everyone's gotten me in the mood. And the last of the toasted pumpkin seeds from Halloween.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:10 (eighteen years ago) link

it's drug slang.

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:10 (eighteen years ago) link

movie premiere?

I don't have anything to do this weekend except project to insulate windows & floorboards of my freezing cold back bedroom in old DC rowhouse..

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:19 (eighteen years ago) link

that is important!

petesmith (plsmith), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I suppose I should do something about these "storm window" things we seem to have--our place is way chilly.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 21:22 (eighteen years ago) link

i have to: create wedding invitations, go shopping for a suit, go to some stores and register for shit because when you try to register online they only let you pick certain items (WTF?!), winter-proof my apartment because it's freezing downstairs and we're gonna be paying $200+ in gas bills anyway.

my weekend sucks. i better have a beer or several tonight.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Don't forget to register for the big-ass grill.

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

oh Johnny Cash!

Allyzay must fight Zolton herself. (allyzay), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Mookie, let me know how the suit-shopping goes; there's some of that in my future. No registration or invitations, fortunately.

We haven't gotten a gas bill since we moved in; either the landlord's been paying it or there's gonna be a five-figure reckoning someday.

Stephen X (Stephen X), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:29 (eighteen years ago) link

i have no room for a big-ass grill. actually, everything we would want is either like a $5 wooden spoon or a king-size bed, so registering isn't helping us much.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:30 (eighteen years ago) link

What else does one do to winter-proof freezing DC rowhouse? I got one of those window insulation kits, and some sealing stuff.. the whole house needs window insulation but I'm not paying for all those myself..

dar1a g (daria g), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, I still don't know what the fuck the title of this thread means.

http://www.thedvdreport.com/dvd_graphics/n/no_way_out_dvd.jpg

This has one of the greatest totally nonsense DC chase scenes ever filmed. Also, Costner spends 90% of the movie in Navy dress whites.

TOMBOT, Friday, 18 November 2005 21:38 (eighteen years ago) link

haha I know what I'm renting this weekend!

quincie, Friday, 18 November 2005 21:46 (eighteen years ago) link

avert your eyes when they take a cab!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 18 November 2005 21:59 (eighteen years ago) link

is that really how you ?
