anyway i don't see guillotining as a thing in the grand tradition of the Terror, i just think that there will always be human beings who are intractably opposed to freedom and democracy and that come the reconfiguration of our socioeconomic system some hardened oppressors may leave us no choice other than to put them out of our misery. circumstances and method to be decided on the day.

But Oliver was not the only effigy hanged that day. Alongside the stamp officer, the Bostonians suspended a large Jack Boot with the head of a demon poking from the top. The boot and demon were a reference to John Stuart, Earl of Bute, an unpopular former Prime Minister who was widely attacked as the mastermind of the Stamp Act.

i view it more as a kind of grand guignol social experiment: will the super-rich stop pointlessly hoarding their wealth if they see that a hundred or so of their peers are pulled from their ivory towers and decapitated by baying mobs? we'll never know unless we try, and we already have a control group in the form of the last 70 years or so of western culture!

Mordy, Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:19 (six years ago) link

that poem at the end of the scotophobic tree waterer thing is really something:

The Scottish people is rejected,
The world besides will be accepted.
Jews, Infidels and Hottentots
We welcome here – but not the Scots.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:20 (six years ago) link

who even remembers there was scot hate in this country? seems like such a quaint hate at this point.

scott seward, Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:22 (six years ago) link

The Irish hadn't arrived yet, that explains it.

During the evening celebrations, the Bostonians toasted to ‘A Repeal of the Stamp Act, and a perpetual Itching without the Benefit of Scratching to its Friends’. This was a reference to the notorious ‘Scottish Itch’, the common stereotype being that dirty, lice-ridden Scots were constantly scratching themselves.

*tries not to scratch*

Welch is also known for abolishing the nine-layer management hierarchy and bringing a sense of informality to the company.[17]

During the early 1980s he was dubbed "Neutron Jack" (in reference to the neutron bomb) for eliminating employees while leaving buildings intact

Eurovision

MaresNest, Sunday, 13 May 2018 09:35 (six years ago) link

Lots of people always seem to be very keen to talk about how uninterested they are in Eurovision

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 13 May 2018 09:38 (six years ago) link

I can do without hearing the fake poptimist from The Tax Payer's Alliance so very interesting take on the extravaganza, though. But that does serve me right for watching the wretched Marr Show.

I'd say I'm genuinely uninterested. I'm only aware of its existence because I see people tweeting about it, but don't know where I'd even go to watch it if I wanted to.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 13 May 2018 10:32 (six years ago) link

I guess I am mostly perplexed by some of my friends, who don't appear to engage with any other sort of harmless campy events, completely lose their shit whenever Eurovision rolls around.

MaresNest, Sunday, 13 May 2018 11:25 (six years ago) link

maybe they like Eurovision but not any other campy events
