I like that they included a "Come to Amber's workshop on canvassing" spot recently. I wish there was more of that and less America the Book plugging

you can expect a fresh round of "who do these assholes think they are?!" takes when they hit 100k on Patreon, which will be in the near future(I think they've made more than enough money as it is, #BlackWolfFeed forever)

Black Wolves must be hunted down
This was a great ep btw, except the part when Ehrenreich was like “mammograms and colonoscopies don’t prevent disease” gtfooooooo

I haven't read her book yet but it sounds like it works more as a meditation on our societal attitudes toward health and death than as sound analysis of specific procedures and treatments.

iirc there is some dispute over the effectiveness of mammograms?
― Simon H., Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link
There is dispute over how broadly and at what age mammograms and colonoscopies should be recommended. I think there is no dispute over whether they prevent disease, but some dispute (at least in the colonoscopy case, which I know about a little more) about whether a broadened testing regime leads people to get surgeries to remove slow-growing tumors they could have just unknowingly lived with for the rest of their life, and out of every 1000 surgeries, especially with older patients, you're gonna have some bad outcomes. But I wouldn't say they "don't prevent disease," just that there are health costs in addition to the health benefits.
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 10 May 2018 15:55 (six years ago) link
apparently quite a lot of women get false positives on mammograms and end up getting cancer treatment they don't need. so there is some dispute as to how early and how often women should get them when you weigh up the benefits of early detection vs these false positives.
there will be some article on the NYT or similar about it if you have a google

The book excerpt they read on the show wasn't bad, although it didn't feel particularly Chapo-esque in style either (maybe because it was the Virgil and Brendan chapter).

I've liked every single one I've watched. Her two-parter on capitalism is a great entry point for budding leftists, I think. Her most recent one on trans discourse and self-loathing was SUPER interesting too.

I liked Amber's reading on the NYPost labor article, diff style than Will's but very illuminating. I think she should do her own podcast on labor politics and organizing or something like that, maybe get away from the chapo schtickiness and more of her own voice

From that Salon article, did anyone notice this bit:
‘My views have changed enough that I went on a February afternoon to a Communist Manifesto Class held by the Party for Socialism and Liberation.’
It’s an...interesting development to go from sorta disengaged straight to PSL.

That Atlantic article about remaking the NY subways was a real find, exactly the kind of thing I come to Chapo for.
His twitter thread on the article is worth a read too:
The subway is a mess. It's time for a radically reimagined underground transportation system, @peterwayner argues. https://t.co/lE7c2Xu66u— The Atlantic (@TheAtlantic) June 9, 2018
Amazing how many people even find it worthwhile to engage him, as though there is some kind of meaningful and adequately-considered idea here to be debated. Great illustration of (1) my new favorite phrase, which I cribbed from Wild Wild Country: "educated beyond their intelligence," and (2) the fact that a very stupid person can get far in life with the right ideology.
