We saw what we think was a southern Boobook on the he way to the station tonight, sitting on a power line.

There's a Barred Owl sitting on a dead fir branch in my backyard. It's been there all afternoon, even when I was puttering back there within 25 feet of it. Other birds have been coming by and yelling at it, especially this one Steller's Jay, but it seems imperturbable.
Tonight at dusk there will be a massive fireworks show about a mile from our house. Each year it sounds like a battery of howitzers going off for more than 20 minutes. I don't expect it will stick around much for the show. I hope it likes its nice dead branch and comes back some more, through the summer. It's a better mouser than a cat!

I was hiking up in the San Gabriels yesterday and on the way down I spotted a funny looking rock in the middle of the trail that I didn't recall seeing on the way up. I was just about to poke at it when it instantly pointed an eye at me, spread wings, and flew off.
Meet the flammulated owl!
