i liked watching Love Island with my daughter last week cos it's really designed to sit and joke about it with somebody else

obv i feel the pain of non-football fans subjected to World Cup fever for a month but tbh we all have to live surrounded by bullshit fever for some shitty cultural thing that we don't care about 99 percent of the time so i think people shd really be able to manage just fine and suffer in silence

"Africa" by Toto

flappy bird, Monday, 18 June 2018 18:11 (six years ago) link

it’s no ‘rosanna’ right enough

Or "Hold the Line".

We can be herpes (Tom D.), Monday, 18 June 2018 18:15 (six years ago) link

tru

I never liked the song but I never really hated it. as far as I can remember it was always a joke, like 'Never Gonna Give You Up' even pre-Rickroll. I don't understand the sudden surge in ironic/or is it? talk of Toto's 'Africa.'

flappy bird, Monday, 18 June 2018 18:17 (six years ago) link

it just seems like a meme that arrived 10 years late

I like it, it's a good song, but not that good.

it's been a lol-80s party favourite for years now

Africa by Toto was in GTA: Vice City making it a favourite lol 80s song of a whole generation. But that predated current social media, and perhaps the subsequent generation is catching on to it now? (feel like maybe this isn't the case and it's all 30 year olds creating the Africa content)

i really like never gonna give you up and have done it at karaoke a few times. it goes down absolutely terribly and I'm never doing it again

The Africa by Toto thread already went over - in excruciating detail - the issues of whether the song was always awesome (and fortuitously rescued from obscurity by memedom), always in the culture (which was exactly where it belonged), always a joke and only referenced for camp/"ironic" reasons, and every permutation in between.

I understand some ilx0rz may be late to this particular party, but the "I don't care" thread seems an odd place to open those buckets of worms. If you truly don't care, then move on with your life.

If you are interested in discussing the nuances of how/why this song is being perceived and discussed in the year of our lord 2018, then it stands to reason that you do, in fact, actively care.

other people's opinions about whether or not i do, in fact, care about something or not

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 03:04 (six years ago) link

i mean people usually explicate why they don't care about something itt. usually between 1-4 posts... toto has always been in the culture but i've just sensed an uptick in the last six months or so. whatever. Good song

One minute silences. (I'm certain it's been said on this thread before).

We can be herpes (Tom D.), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 09:12 (six years ago) link

while we are having one for the fallen of The Great War might as well make it two minutes for those poor souls that went down with the Titanic and then another for the Lusitania .. and then Rod Hull ... and then RIP Gazza ... etc..

We're almost having one a week where I work.

We can be herpes (Tom D.), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 09:22 (six years ago) link

I didn't realise you were a football steward, Tom.

calzino, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 09:26 (six years ago) link

I remember where I used to work, they had a kind of social club and I was in there one evening and a DJ was playing records and he stopped the music at one point and announced we were to have a one minute silence for Damilola Taylor (it was in the year 2000, in case you're wondering). He then started the music again after about 20 seconds and carried on. Then he stopped it again and said, "I've been told that one minute silence wasn't a minute so we're going to do it again." This time he started the music after 30 seconds. I made my excuses and left.

We can be herpes (Tom D.), Tuesday, 19 June 2018 09:29 (six years ago) link

tbf the silence was still probably playing while the dj brought the next song into the mix

Neil S, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 09:47 (six years ago) link

I used to take a lot of pleasure in pissing off po-faced minute's silence wankers at football matches, helped by having a loud disabled kid with me who genuinely doesn't gaf about "the rules" . And I used to feel like high-fiving any other ppl nonchalantly sat back and not giving much of a fuck about it - usually surly teenagers with attitude types!

calzino, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 09:49 (six years ago) link

One minute silences. (I'm certain it's been said on this thread before).

― We can be herpes (Tom D.)

i feel like there's a continuum from one minute silences -> flag at half-mast -> "thoughts and prayers". but that's probably just me.
