When I used to answer the phones for the lawyer in NC I would say something like, "You don't want me to give you any legal advice! Not only is it against the law, but it would totally mess up your case!" Just basically playing as dumb as they cumb.

Lucky you! I was applying at journals though, someone who worked there was all like "Uh, don't get yr hopes up"
― Gavin, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:02 (sixteen years ago) link
Lucky you!
Boy, doesn't everyone love it when someone appears out of nowhere, in a place where we all clearly know each other, and starts laying on the snark? Is there anything more charming?
― kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:06 (sixteen years ago) link
That wasn't snark, but have at it if ye must.
― Gavin, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:07 (sixteen years ago) link
I could see reading that as snark (I didn't; I actually read it in a funny high-pitched voice with a British accent, but... yeah, probably a little 5 pm giddiness there), but let's give our new friend the benefit of the doubt.
― Jenny, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link
I applied at a journal :-/
― river wolf, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:10 (sixteen years ago) link
I read it in the "OY GUV'NA CAN I HAVE SOME MORE PLEASE???" voice that makes enrages Jeff! I'm going home now!
― Jenny, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:11 (sixteen years ago) link
i applied to a journal to but was already rejected :-/
― deej, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:11 (sixteen years ago) link
"hello can i have a job at your gurnal?"
― Jordan, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:11 (sixteen years ago) link
Yeah, I'm going home, too. I'm testy. I need dinner and sleep, hopefully in that order.
― kenan, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:13 (sixteen years ago) link
I may have been lucky because I got a techy position and one thing that the U doesn't really have is tech degrees. They have CS but I doubt anyone from that program is going to want to come here for sub-40k starting pay.
But srsly I work for the biggest department in Journals (~40 ppl) and like one person went to school here.
― dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:18 (sixteen years ago) link
I need input/help on wording a flier. We're trying to lure in 6 people to serve on a mock jury. It's in late Oct 9AM-3PM. Stipend is $50 and you get free lunch at a decent local pub. The target audience is W. Loop workers and UIC students.
My predecessor wrote "HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO BE A JUROR BUT NOT BE ON A JURY?"
And my answer to that is "Hmm. Not really, no."
Can anyone get me started here? My cleverness and knack for luring in folks is at a low.
― Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:28 (sixteen years ago) link
If you're really looking for students, make the $50 and FREE FOOD the biggest parts.
― dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:29 (sixteen years ago) link
I would be on a mock jury! That sounds like better money and food than being on a real jury. Also, nostalgia for high school social studies class.
― Jordan, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:30 (sixteen years ago) link
That was already done, actually.
It's the biggest thing on the page. I just hate that headline.
What is appealing about being on a mock jury for you guys, as intelligent, thoughtful people we would want on the jury. I wonder if they select the jury in the same way they would in court?
― Jesse, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:46 (sixteen years ago) link
I would think that a fake trial has a better chance of being an interesting case than a real one.
― Jordan, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:48 (sixteen years ago) link
I can think of two or three dudes off the top of my head who might be interested.
― dan m, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:50 (sixteen years ago) link
do you dream of glamour and intrigue? murder and espionage? have you ever wanted to be a film noir star? or maybe just wear a trenchcoat and dark glasses? well, we can't offer you all that, but we CAN give you free food, $50 and a day in the life of a juror!
― sisut, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:54 (sixteen years ago) link
You should ask who wants to be a Rural Juror!
― Jordan, Monday, 1 October 2007 22:58 (sixteen years ago) link
SIGN ME UP.

For those of you keeping track at home, M1sch@ and "Dewar"* both passed the bar exam.

― Eazy, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 00:17 (sixteen years ago) link
Jesse, I am not going to talk about Radiohead on the internet.
I came to the conclusion last week that I spend too much time talking about stuff and not doing a very good job of it.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 00:27 (sixteen years ago) link
Speaking of talking about stuff on the internet, have we yet collectively anticipated 30 Days of Night? Jordan? Because I am f'n ANTICIPATING 30 Days of Night. That is easily my favorite horror comic.
― Jenny, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 00:32 (sixteen years ago) link
Also: Sam Raimi!
Also: Vampires!
― Jenny, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 00:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Okay, I'm done anticipating now.
― Jenny, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 00:49 (sixteen years ago) link
I lied! I was not done anticipating! I started a thread! That is the third thread I have ever started on all of ILX.
― Jenny, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 01:01 (sixteen years ago) link
Hi Jenny.
― Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 02:02 (sixteen years ago) link
I am going to go with a boring, stupid flier like The Predecessor made, and then I'm going to make a fun one, sort of like what Katie was suggesting.
― Jesse, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 02:03 (sixteen years ago) link
Then I'll present them both to The Partners.

El Cid just renovated.
Oh yeah and that is 1.5 blocks from my house.
― dan m, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 02:15 (sixteen years ago) link
That's only if you're right by the actual square, though. It's a big neighborhood.
