life isn't good enough to be sober for all of it

That's part of it.

The other way of looking at it is that some bits of life are amicably complemented by drinking, and vice versa. In the way that wines and food go well together. Or the way that when you put complementary colors next to each other, both benefit and seem truer and more vibrant.

Camaraderie, joy, food, celebration, even quiet solitary contemplation are among these. It's not that one _must_ drink to make these enjoyable - it's that one _can_, and the combination is pleasing. So why not, provided this can be done without harming others (or oneself overmuch)?

I was at the bar sitting outside in the shade yesterday afternoon and felt like I could chill there forever

calstars, Sunday, 8 July 2018 13:51 (five years ago) link

no chillin in bars

repartee is deft (darraghmac), Sunday, 8 July 2018 14:30 (five years ago) link

crazy sometimes to think about the fact that there are people out there who don't drink

im sure there is a heroin addict something thinking the same thing about non-junkies

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 8 July 2018 15:41 (five years ago) link

drinking is a hugely socially acceptable thing w massive industry & promotional push behind it, portrayed as cool in every pop song and tv show and movie, it is hardly interesting behavior

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 8 July 2018 15:42 (five years ago) link

but dont let that stop you from patting yourself on the back pretending that pointless consumption is actually some philosophical approach towards life

Hazy Maze Cave (Adam Bruneau), Sunday, 8 July 2018 15:45 (five years ago) link

jfc Adam did you run out of beer or something

El Tomboto, Sunday, 8 July 2018 15:53 (five years ago) link

never trust a bastard that doesn't like gouching out on a gram of good heroin :p

calzino, Sunday, 8 July 2018 16:04 (five years ago) link

drinking beer kicks ass, i'm sure you understand why but are choosing to be a petulant ween about it instead

global tetrahedron, Sunday, 8 July 2018 16:33 (five years ago) link

challops bruno strikes again

repartee is deft (darraghmac), Sunday, 8 July 2018 16:55 (five years ago) link

Thinking about starting an I'm Sober! thread.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 8 July 2018 18:41 (five years ago) link

Hey whaddaya know:

Sobriety: Classic or Dud?

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 8 July 2018 19:12 (five years ago) link

also potentially relevant is I'm an alcoholic

nonsensei (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 8 July 2018 19:56 (five years ago) link

I’m drunk tbh

U. K. Le Garage (wins), Sunday, 8 July 2018 19:57 (five years ago) link

some bits of life are amicably complemented by drinking

this is true for many of us, but for others it is more of a theory that never coincides with reality

A is for (Aimless), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:01 (five years ago) link

crossposting with all the EtOH threads encouraged!

To be clear though there are all sorts of reasons ppl choose not to drink. In my world people tend to assume that anyone who doesn't drink has a history of EtOH problems, is 12 stepping, etc. But that is a very narrow perspective, one that doesn't help with the "sober" stigma.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

xp think the post covered must vs can ably and was covered by the usual overarching proviso of "nobody claims universal truth of experience" tbf to ymp

xp lol mixing threads

repartee is deft (darraghmac), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:05 (five years ago) link

sounds like you could be. . . drunk?

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:05 (five years ago) link

just Irish I think

U. K. Le Garage (wins), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:06 (five years ago) link

I've never stopped supping since I was 15 tbh and am from a lineage of dour stayers! but idk life just seems to be a mixture of horror, fear and crushing disappointment and no fun without booze.

calzino, Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:06 (five years ago) link

sober as a judge!

repartee is deft (darraghmac), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:07 (five years ago) link

but first xp was to aimless if that clarifies!

fwiw two of my brothers dont drink, one because he has finally learned he shouldnt/cannot and remain employed, married and homed, the other never did. the former has to deal with the barraging of peers all the time supporting yr observation, the latter has just never built up peers that would blink at his nondrinking.

repartee is deft (darraghmac), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:11 (five years ago) link

Haha I didn’t even scroll up so I had no idea there was a trademark AB eggfart itt

But the reason I have now scrolled up is that I’m afraid I don’t know what etoh means, apart from a teletubby greeting? Sorry if I’m missing something obvious

U. K. Le Garage (wins), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:11 (five years ago) link

EtOH is an abbreviation for ethyl alcohol aka ethanol. Sorry it may be a mostly USA medical type abbreviation.

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:14 (five years ago) link

thanking u darragh, I am of course talking about if this is a thing you want to do, and you can do it safely, rock on.

Both conditions are salient! Of course the first criterion will be more relevant for some people than the second. So I am actually agreeing with quincie here.

nonsensei (Ye Mad Puffin), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:16 (five years ago) link

Cheers YMP!

mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 8 July 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link

Do we need an “I’m a drunk alcoholic” thread

calstars, Sunday, 8 July 2018 21:03 (five years ago) link

Perhaps more accurately titled “I’m a drunk alcoholic asshole” or “I’m a drunk alcoholic philistine” or “I’m a drunk alcoholic wannabe boddhisattava”

calstars, Sunday, 8 July 2018 21:06 (five years ago) link

let's leave steely dan out of this

mookieproof, Sunday, 8 July 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

sort of like playing nintendo games

at my age i have a hard time going full alky, not because i'm averse to being drunk but because the beers i drink have so many fucking calories in them. i'm definitely more likely to die of a heart attach than i am to die of liver failure, and as a result i don't really go any farther than drinking a pint with more calories in it than a big mac, getting mildly buzzed and taking a nap.

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Sunday, 8 July 2018 22:22 (five years ago) link

by the way re: nintendo games, i'm definitely playing zelda on the wii u right now with a wonky d-pad and it's still fun even though i know i'm going to have to give up on it probably sooner rather than later.

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Sunday, 8 July 2018 22:22 (five years ago) link

I find it very difficult to get satisfyingly drunk because I tend to fall asleep after 1 or 2 drinks.

googling "people who drink" gives me statements such as "People who drink alcohol have dirty mouths crawling with bad bacteria" and "People who drink are smarter and richer than everyone else"

googling "people who don't drink" gives me "24 problems only people who don't drink will understand" and "Why I don't trust people who don't drink"

i'm honestly not all that invested versus "drinking" vs. "not drinking" but i do believe strongly that all of the people who wrote the statements above are human garbage and should be banned from ever speaking to anybody again

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Monday, 9 July 2018 02:09 (five years ago) link

So that’s a long way of repeating the thread title

El Tomboto, Monday, 9 July 2018 04:20 (five years ago) link

I’d love to have the laser focus of calstars, but drinking for me is 1) not everyday anymore thank God; and 2) definitively for the erasure purposes of being very drunk when I want to be (often post here then)

I will never ‘enjoy’ a glass at dinner

lion in winter, Monday, 9 July 2018 07:40 (five years ago) link

That’s a lie, I’ll enjoy several. To all the moderates: I salute you!

lion in winter, Monday, 9 July 2018 07:43 (five years ago) link

Find drinking is a solid shield for better or worse. Any time I’ve had to go do something serious or go on a mission it’s never not been relaxed by a drink. Come to like having a stray beer in the forest or by a lake as meditation but drunken loud assholes can go fuck themselves

no, actually, by the time i wrote that i'd sobered up

another reason i don't drink terribly much i guess

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Monday, 9 July 2018 12:49 (five years ago) link

My drinkitude has been about the same for at least 25 years - a modest but steady trickle all week, rather than dry weekdays and massive weekend binges. This has led (fortunately or unfortunately) to a fairly bulletproof level of tolerance. As a result, I don't think I've been drunk in many years. Pleasantly insulated after two or three drinks, yes. Warmly buzzed after three or four, definitely. Rarely if ever go past that point.

nonsensei (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 9 July 2018 13:41 (five years ago) link
