some bits of life are amicably complemented by drinking

this is true for many of us, but for others it is more of a theory that never coincides with reality

crossposting with all the EtOH threads encouraged!

To be clear though there are all sorts of reasons ppl choose not to drink. In my world people tend to assume that anyone who doesn't drink has a history of EtOH problems, is 12 stepping, etc. But that is a very narrow perspective, one that doesn't help with the "sober" stigma.

I've never stopped supping since I was 15 tbh and am from a lineage of dour stayers! but idk life just seems to be a mixture of horror, fear and crushing disappointment and no fun without booze.

fwiw two of my brothers dont drink, one because he has finally learned he shouldnt/cannot and remain employed, married and homed, the other never did. the former has to deal with the barraging of peers all the time supporting yr observation, the latter has just never built up peers that would blink at his nondrinking.

EtOH is an abbreviation for ethyl alcohol aka ethanol. Sorry it may be a mostly USA medical type abbreviation.

Both conditions are salient! Of course the first criterion will be more relevant for some people than the second. So I am actually agreeing with quincie here.

at my age i have a hard time going full alky, not because i'm averse to being drunk but because the beers i drink have so many fucking calories in them. i'm definitely more likely to die of a heart attach than i am to die of liver failure, and as a result i don't really go any farther than drinking a pint with more calories in it than a big mac, getting mildly buzzed and taking a nap.

by the way re: nintendo games, i'm definitely playing zelda on the wii u right now with a wonky d-pad and it's still fun even though i know i'm going to have to give up on it probably sooner rather than later.

I find it very difficult to get satisfyingly drunk because I tend to fall asleep after 1 or 2 drinks.

googling "people who drink" gives me statements such as "People who drink alcohol have dirty mouths crawling with bad bacteria" and "People who drink are smarter and richer than everyone else"

googling "people who don't drink" gives me "24 problems only people who don't drink will understand" and "Why I don't trust people who don't drink"

i'm honestly not all that invested versus "drinking" vs. "not drinking" but i do believe strongly that all of the people who wrote the statements above are human garbage and should be banned from ever speaking to anybody again

I’d love to have the laser focus of calstars, but drinking for me is 1) not everyday anymore thank God; and 2) definitively for the erasure purposes of being very drunk when I want to be (often post here then)

Find drinking is a solid shield for better or worse. Any time I’ve had to go do something serious or go on a mission it’s never not been relaxed by a drink. Come to like having a stray beer in the forest or by a lake as meditation but drunken loud assholes can go fuck themselves

My drinkitude has been about the same for at least 25 years - a modest but steady trickle all week, rather than dry weekdays and massive weekend binges. This has led (fortunately or unfortunately) to a fairly bulletproof level of tolerance. As a result, I don't think I've been drunk in many years. Pleasantly insulated after two or three drinks, yes. Warmly buzzed after three or four, definitely. Rarely if ever go past that point.

If you are awake, there are psychoactive substances the=at can do something about that. If you are sober, there are steps you can take.

i'm awake but that's because it's a quarter past six in the evening and i'm at work. i have had two shots of tequila tho fwiw

a good functional alcoholic doesn't need to get drunk if they are doing it properly!

It's an expensive habit no matter which way you slice it. Especially since in my case it almost invariably leads to a lit cigarette, then another, and another…

couple of scoops of wine, followed by afternoon nap = the recipe for longevity.

Besides, you can take comfort in knowing that the UK isn't even in the international top 10 for alcohol consumption per capita these days:

Kind of unrelated, but I am consistently appalled at the low alcohol content of mainstream English beers. 3.8% is just ridiculous.

I visited Brussels a few months back and went all out just to compensate. It was sublime.
