drinking is a hugely socially acceptable thing w massive industry & promotional push behind it, portrayed as cool in every pop song and tv show and movie, it is hardly interesting behavior

googling "people who drink" gives me statements such as "People who drink alcohol have dirty mouths crawling with bad bacteria" and "People who drink are smarter and richer than everyone else"
googling "people who don't drink" gives me "24 problems only people who don't drink will understand" and "Why I don't trust people who don't drink"
i'm honestly not all that invested versus "drinking" vs. "not drinking" but i do believe strongly that all of the people who wrote the statements above are human garbage and should be banned from ever speaking to anybody again

So that’s a long way of repeating the thread title

I’d love to have the laser focus of calstars, but drinking for me is 1) not everyday anymore thank God; and 2) definitively for the erasure purposes of being very drunk when I want to be (often post here then)
I will never ‘enjoy’ a glass at dinner
― lion in winter, Monday, 9 July 2018 07:40 (five years ago) link
That’s a lie, I’ll enjoy several. To all the moderates: I salute you!

Find drinking is a solid shield for better or worse. Any time I’ve had to go do something serious or go on a mission it’s never not been relaxed by a drink. Come to like having a stray beer in the forest or by a lake as meditation but drunken loud assholes can go fuck themselves

no, actually, by the time i wrote that i'd sobered up
another reason i don't drink terribly much i guess

My drinkitude has been about the same for at least 25 years - a modest but steady trickle all week, rather than dry weekdays and massive weekend binges. This has led (fortunately or unfortunately) to a fairly bulletproof level of tolerance. As a result, I don't think I've been drunk in many years. Pleasantly insulated after two or three drinks, yes. Warmly buzzed after three or four, definitely. Rarely if ever go past that point.

If you are awake, there are psychoactive substances the=at can do something about that. If you are sober, there are steps you can take.

i'm awake but that's because it's a quarter past six in the evening and i'm at work. i have had two shots of tequila tho fwiw

Besides, you can take comfort in knowing that the UK isn't even in the international top 10 for alcohol consumption per capita these days:

Kind of unrelated, but I am consistently appalled at the low alcohol content of mainstream English beers. 3.8% is just ridiculous.

even uk stella has gone down to 4.5% i think. ffs.
― calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:56 (five years ago) link
I'm also bemused by the distinct scarcity of strong stouts, porters and the like, which are what most North Americans think of as 'English beer', at least in my experience.
― pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:57 (five years ago) link
in london at least there seems to be a swing towards fairly high abv - mostly due to craft beer. all the pubs near my work/home have a p wide range of higher abv beers.
― FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:59 (five years ago) link
offies in Afro-Caribbean areas will at least have Dragon Stout and that 8% strength(?) Guinness export stout that I think is excellent stuff.
― calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 12:01 (five years ago) link
I prefer low alcohol content beers because I can drink a lot of them. this is why I mostly drink water: I like to drink A LOT and I don't really like being drunk. in the uk I guess people take me to pubs where the """real ales""" are pretty high alcohol content because more than one is just, like, work. in bavaria now where the classic beers are also pretty low & I like it.

yeah i like the session ales, though i find some of them a bit sweet and cloying after 2 or 3.

pleased to announce UK stella is still 4.8%. It was Budweiser that has gone down to 4.5%. yeah i know Budweiser .. but i'll drink anything and it is excellent for beef stews.

I just started reading a Strindberg novel after lunch and thought of this thread. The introduction consists of him interviewing himself, in the course of which is this exchange:
Interviewer. [..] don't think you really think you should practice what you preach?
Author. That's impossible. It's true that you Christians should, but there's no reason why we heathens should. I once thought I could become a teetotaller, but I know I'm doomed to drink as long as I live because my forefathers were drinking ever since time began.

I seem to recall a scene from Georges Bernanos's Diary of a Country Priest where the doctor tells the protagonist that his problem isn't so much the alcohol that he drinks as the alcohol that was drunk for him, even before he was born.
