I’d love to have the laser focus of calstars, but drinking for me is 1) not everyday anymore thank God; and 2) definitively for the erasure purposes of being very drunk when I want to be (often post here then)

I will never ‘enjoy’ a glass at dinner

lion in winter, Monday, 9 July 2018 07:40 (five years ago) link

That’s a lie, I’ll enjoy several. To all the moderates: I salute you!

lion in winter, Monday, 9 July 2018 07:43 (five years ago) link

Find drinking is a solid shield for better or worse. Any time I’ve had to go do something serious or go on a mission it’s never not been relaxed by a drink. Come to like having a stray beer in the forest or by a lake as meditation but drunken loud assholes can go fuck themselves

Ross, Monday, 9 July 2018 07:50 (five years ago) link

So that’s a long way of repeating the thread title

― El Tomboto

no, actually, by the time i wrote that i'd sobered up

another reason i don't drink terribly much i guess

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Monday, 9 July 2018 12:49 (five years ago) link

My drinkitude has been about the same for at least 25 years - a modest but steady trickle all week, rather than dry weekdays and massive weekend binges. This has led (fortunately or unfortunately) to a fairly bulletproof level of tolerance. As a result, I don't think I've been drunk in many years. Pleasantly insulated after two or three drinks, yes. Warmly buzzed after three or four, definitely. Rarely if ever go past that point.

nine months pass...

Are any ILXorz awake right now?

Anne Hedonia (j.lu), Sunday, 28 April 2019 03:17 (five years ago) link

Yes and jealous of your current state

calstars, Sunday, 28 April 2019 03:53 (five years ago) link

If you are awake, there are psychoactive substances the=at can do something about that. If you are sober, there are steps you can take.

Anne Hedonia (j.lu), Sunday, 28 April 2019 04:11 (five years ago) link

i'm awake but that's because it's a quarter past six in the evening and i'm at work. i have had two shots of tequila tho fwiw

difficult listening hour, Sunday, 28 April 2019 04:18 (five years ago) link

Sorry; I didn't account for time difference. But I HATE being at work when there's nothing to do.

Anne Hedonia (j.lu), Sunday, 28 April 2019 05:04 (five years ago) link

I'm pretty yessed out

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:27 (five years ago) link

a good functional alcoholic doesn't need to get drunk if they are doing it properly!

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:28 (five years ago) link

i'm just having a nice Tesco brand glass of Sicilian red wine in the calm manner I always do rn ...

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:32 (five years ago) link

It's an expensive habit no matter which way you slice it. Especially since in my case it almost invariably leads to a lit cigarette, then another, and another…

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:33 (five years ago) link

couple of scoops of wine, followed by afternoon nap = the recipe for longevity.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:36 (five years ago) link

Besides, you can take comfort in knowing that the UK isn't even in the international top 10 for alcohol consumption per capita these days:

Ireland is though.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:47 (five years ago) link

I think Romania was ahead of Ireland a few years ago. A disappointing development.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:49 (five years ago) link

Hold on to your hats though when Wee Nicola wins IndyRef2.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:49 (five years ago) link

Kind of unrelated, but I am consistently appalled at the low alcohol content of mainstream English beers. 3.8% is just ridiculous.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:53 (five years ago) link

I visited Brussels a few months back and went all out just to compensate. It was sublime.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:54 (five years ago) link

they've been stealthily reducing them for years now. thank god for good old tyskie.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:55 (five years ago) link

even uk stella has gone down to 4.5% i think. ffs.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:56 (five years ago) link

I'm also bemused by the distinct scarcity of strong stouts, porters and the like, which are what most North Americans think of as 'English beer', at least in my experience.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:57 (five years ago) link

in london at least there seems to be a swing towards fairly high abv - mostly due to craft beer. all the pubs near my work/home have a p wide range of higher abv beers.

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 11:59 (five years ago) link

offies in Afro-Caribbean areas will at least have Dragon Stout and that 8% strength(?) Guinness export stout that I think is excellent stuff.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 12:01 (five years ago) link

I prefer low alcohol content beers because I can drink a lot of them. this is why I mostly drink water: I like to drink A LOT and I don't really like being drunk. in the uk I guess people take me to pubs where the """real ales""" are pretty high alcohol content because more than one is just, like, work. in bavaria now where the classic beers are also pretty low & I like it.

L'assie (Euler), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 12:38 (five years ago) link

After a few hours in the pub i am usually pretty leathered, don't think i need to get there any quicker than i already do

I have grown to love the session ale, key to maintaining that sweet tipsy buzz

ogmor, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:16 (five years ago) link

when last I was here, it turned out to be because I'd mistaken some green tea concoction for a herbal blend at approximately 11pm.. exhausted and wondering why I could not sleep. 3 stars.

maffew12, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:18 (five years ago) link

yeah i like the session ales, though i find some of them a bit sweet and cloying after 2 or 3.

FernandoHierro, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:19 (five years ago) link

pleased to announce UK stella is still 4.8%. It was Budweiser that has gone down to 4.5%. yeah i know Budweiser .. but i'll drink anything and it is excellent for beef stews.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:29 (five years ago) link

You can trick yourself into thinking it's the Czech brewery.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:34 (five years ago) link

It's still 5% in North America btw. And 3.6% in China…

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:36 (five years ago) link

you'd need some top rate hypnosis to work that on me, Budvar is on a different level to that piss.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:36 (five years ago) link

but piss I reluctantly imbibe when it's on offer at tescos nevertheless!

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:38 (five years ago) link

you wake with a hangover in China, better check your social credit rating?

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:39 (five years ago) link

Indeed. It comes with a smart metre.

pomenitul, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 13:44 (five years ago) link

I just started reading a Strindberg novel after lunch and thought of this thread. The introduction consists of him interviewing himself, in the course of which is this exchange:

Interviewer. [..] don't think you really think you should practice what you preach?

Author. That's impossible. It's true that you Christians should, but there's no reason why we heathens should. I once thought I could become a teetotaller, but I know I'm doomed to drink as long as I live because my forefathers were drinking ever since time began.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 14:14 (five years ago) link

... which doesn't hold out much hope for the Irish and Scots tbh.

Ned Caligari (Tom D.), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 14:15 (five years ago) link

I seem to recall a scene from Georges Bernanos's Diary of a Country Priest where the doctor tells the protagonist that his problem isn't so much the alcohol that he drinks as the alcohol that was drunk for him, even before he was born.

calzino, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 14:44 (five years ago) link

Also a fan of lower abv. But I generally pace myself according to how much time I have

calstars, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 18:14 (five years ago) link

There's been a big uptick in the amount of non-alcoholic/low alcoholic wines and distilled spirits in the last couple of years too.

Yerac, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 18:31 (five years ago) link

There's a lot more session beers on tap these days but they are inexplicably still around 5%, that's not session! Well maybe it is if the IPAs are all around 6-7% now. But gimme a tasty 3.2% beer so I can drink 4-5 of them in an evening.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Wednesday, 22 May 2019 18:36 (five years ago) link

oddly enough I am researching the topic about the low alcohol market for an exam in June so I have been reading a lot about it.

This is a good article https://www.bonappetit.com/story/big-alcohol

and also re: some above posts:

Heineken is hoping to tap into what it believes is an increasing desire among consumers for beer that will not get them drunk. The European market for zero alcohol beer grew about 5% a year from 2010 to 2015, according to research group Canadean, while the overall beer market shrank.

Rival AB InBev, which makes more than a quarter of the world's beer, is aiming to make a fifth of its beer low- or zero-alcohol by 2025. For the maker of Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona, low means an alcohol content of up to 3.5%.- business insider

Yerac, Wednesday, 22 May 2019 19:34 (five years ago) link

I’ll do a low abv that tastes decent but if I want 0 pct I’ll just have a seltzer
